1788 The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakspere
Located in Bath, GB
A beautiful and scarce 'Bell's Edition of Shakespeare', the vanishingly scarce large paper variant, illustrated with engraved plates. The very scarce complete twenty volume set. A large paper edition, uniformly bound in full morocco. In 1785, John Bell began to issue the 36 separate plays of Shakespeare individually, collecting them here in twenty volumes in 1788 as the 'Dramatick writings of Will. Shakspere'. The set is scarcely found complete. The first two volumes here are a remarkably comprehensive and broad 'Prolegomena' to Shakespeare's works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were often interpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception. The subsequent eighteen volumes consist of the plays themselves, along with notes from Samuel Johnson and George Stevens, a highlight of this particular edition. Volumes I & II: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakespeare. Nine plates to volume I, and eight to volume II. Volume III: The Tempest and Two Gentlemen of Verona. Four plates. Volume IV: The Merry Wives of Windsor and Much Ado About Nothing. Four plates. Volume V: Measure for Measure and A Comedy of Errors. Four plates. Volume VI: Love's Labour's Lost and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Four plates. Volume VII: The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It. Four plates. Volume VIII: The Taming of The Shrew and All's Well That End's Well. Four plates. Volume IX: Twelfth Night and Winter's Tale. Four plates. Volume X: Macbeth and King John. Four plates. Louis XVI Serinette in the Form of a Miniature Commode by Richard, Paris, 1775
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A very rare Louis XVI period serinette or bird organ in the form of a transitional style gilt bronze mounted and marquetry inlaid miniature commode in the manner of gilbert, by Robert Richard, Paris. With a label for ' RICHARD - maitre facteur d’orgues et mécanicien / Rue de richelieu à la bibliothèque Du Roy / Paris 1775'. This rare Serinette or Bird Organ has a wooden cylinder barrel mounted by twelve pins and linked to twelve sound pipes. A crank attached to the front panel controls the bellows that activates the mechanism. The exceptional marquetry inlaid case is in the form of a gilt bronze mounted transitional style miniature commode. The top of the commode is inlaid with a landscape scene with buildings, opening to an interior with an allegory of Love Conquering All, represented by two doves perching on a bow and quiver. The front of the commode depicts two obelisks centred by a Fine musical trophy and each side is inlaid with panels depicting the Medici Vase. The back of the commode is decorated with floral marquetry. A closely related Serinette dating from circa 1770, also in the form of a miniature commode, with the marquetry case stamped by the master marqueteur Leonard Boudin, is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The term serinette is derived from serine, French for finch. The instrument worked like a small barrel organ with a barbed cylinder, wind box and lead pipes and produced a high, thin sound in imitation of birds. Other versions included a merline, which copied blackbirds and a turlutaine, which copied curlews. Used to teach caged birds to sing tunes, different barrels could be inserted to train different birds. It first appeared in France circa 1730 and became a popular drawing-room toy for fashionable women. An interesting painting commissioned in 1751 for Louis XV by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and now in the collection of the Louvre, depicts a refined lady seated in her salon playing a bird organ to encourage her bird to sing. Robert Richard Robert Richard was a Parisian organ and harpsichord maker and the mécanicien du roi to Louis XV and Louis XVI and was based in the Bibliothèque du Roi in rue de Richelieu. Initially working alongside the Cliquot family who acted as 'facteur d'orgue du Roi', he is recorded as building an organ for the church of Notre-Dame de Quebec, in Montreal in 1753 (destroyed in 1759) and as the inventor of a mechanical concert shown in an engraving by d'Eisen in 1769. Canon Jean Marie De La Corne described Robert Richard as : ''Le plus habile ouvrier de paris, fameux mechanitien et Homme de probité''. French, Dated 1775. Literature: Pierre Kjellberg, The French Furniture of the 17th century, The Editions of the Amateur, 2008 Count Francois de Salverte, Cabinetmakers of the 18th century, Editions of Art and History, 1934 Raymond Russell, Victoria and Albert Museum Catalogue of Musical Instruments, Volume I - Keyboard Instruments,(London, 1968; p. 69.) Impressive Decorative Engraved Map of the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula, 1787
Located in Langweer, NL
This map, titled "Karte des arabischen Meerbusens oder des Rothen Meeres," is an original engraving from 1787 created by F. A. Schraembl, based on the cartographic work of d'Anville. It is a partially colored copper engraving. Key features and notable details of the map include: 1. The title is prominently displayed within a large, ornate cartouche, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and indicating the map's subject as the Red Sea (Rothen Meeres). 2. The map covers the Red Sea and its surrounding regions, including significant portions of the Arabian Peninsula and northeastern Africa. 3. There are two detailed inset maps: - The first inset map shows the roadstead of the port of Suez (Rheede des Hafen von Sues). - The second inset map depicts Bahr el Kolsum, the northwestern arm of the Red Sea, based on a map by De la Rochette from 1785. 4. Geographical Features: The map meticulously details the coastline, islands, and notable port cities along the Red Sea. The cartography highlights both natural and man-made features, with elevations and mountains represented through hachures. 5. Condition and Preservation: The map has a horizontal centerfold and is partially backed to prevent tears. The edges of the map sheet show minor holes, tears, and faint brown spots, yet it remains in overall good condition considering its age. 6. Historical Importance: This map is a valuable historical document, reflecting the cartographic knowledge of the late 18th century. It serves as a significant piece for collectors interested in antique maps, particularly those focusing on the Arabian Peninsula and maritime navigation in the Red Sea region. The map shows the coastline of the Red Sea and the Arabian Peninsula, detailing regions and places along the western coast of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, as well as the eastern coast of Egypt and Sudan. Here are some of the most important places identified on the map: 1. Jeddah (Gedda): A major city and port on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, significant for its role as a gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca. 2. Mecca (Mekka): A holy city in Islam, located inland from the Red Sea, important for being the site of pilgrimage (Hajj) for Muslims. 3. Medina (Medina): Another important Islamic city, known for the Prophet's Mosque and being a key pilgrimage site. 4. Suez (Suess): Located at the northern end of the Red Sea, near the Suez Canal, it's a crucial link between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. 5. Aden: A port city in Yemen, located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, historically significant as a trading hub. 6. Mocha (Mokka): A port city in Yemen, historically known for being a major marketplace for coffee. 7. Sana'a: The capital city of Yemen, noted for its historical and cultural significance. 8. Bab el Mandeb: The strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, crucial for maritime navigation. These locations are critical due to their historical, religious, and economic significance, especially in terms of trade routes and pilgrimage sites. The map also illustrates the mountainous terrain and coastal features of the region. The condition and preservation status, which, despite minor imperfections, is considered well-preserved for its age. Overall, this map is a rare and valuable artifact, offering both historical insights and aesthetic appeal for collectors and enthusiasts of antique cartography.
