1940s Pair of Early Charles Eames for Herman Miller LCW Lounge Chairs in Oak

Designed in the late 1940s by Charles Eames, this chair has cemented itself in Mid-Century Design like very few other pieces. Early models like this are difficult to come by and are very rarely in such good condition, as many have been worked on in some way or another before their value shot up. These chairs feature a super sleek design of steam-bent plywood, an incredibly innovative technique pioneered by Herman Miller in collaboration with the Eames's and manufacturing firm Evans. The large seat and back are mounted to a molded plywood base with rubber shock mounts, another Eames staple. This allows them to have excellent contrast through spacing, which gives them an excellent stance, almost insect-like. Both are early chairs with the correct screw configurations beneath.
This pair features all original hardware, finish, and shock mounts. Very few blemishes, and those that exist are minimal, barely visible even in our high-res pictures.

Carl Malmsten was a famous Swedish furniture designer, architect, and educator born in 1888, in Sweden and passed away in 1972. He collaborated with Gunnar Asplund and Uno Ahren. Malmsten has a lasting influence on Swedish design through the two schools which he founded, the Carl Malmsten furniture studies. In 1945, Malmsten was honored for a design with an inaugural Prince Eugen Medal in Sweden.
O.H. Sjögren is one of the oldest Swedish furniture companies which is run by the fourth generation. The company was originally founded in circa 1870 by C. Rosén in Tranås, Sweden. In 1902, the Swedish manufacturer ( known today as O.H. Sjögren ) was taken over by Oskar Herbert Sjögren. In the early times, they were producing harnesses, saddles, etc. for horses. Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
