Full Twist Guest Chairs by Mark Goetz for Herman Miller, circa 2015

About

This set of four (4) Full Twist Guest chairs are by famed designer Mark Goetz and created with cutting edge technology by Geiger International, and distributed by Herman Miller. The Full Twist Guest chair gets its name from the sculpted ribbons of wood that flow seamlessly from the front legs to wrap around the back of this striking guest chair. The Full Twist armchair is Greenguard certified, rest peacefully knowing you are doing your part to help the environment by buying a pre-owned set of chairs that have been produced without many of the harmful contaminants with which non-certified chairs are produced with. Taken from Herman Miller's website: A solid wood chair featuring an upholstered seat, Mark Goetz’s Full Twist Guest Chair is both versatile and comfortable. Utilizing a combination of cutting-edge technology and carpentry craft, a singular, sculpted ribbon of wood seamlessly attaches to the legs while forming both arm rests and a slightly sloping back that cradles the sitter. With its clean lines, the Full Twist Guest Chair is equally suited to commercial applications such as private offices and conference areas, and residential spaces. Produced by Geiger, the design is available in their complete range of woods and upholsteries, offering near limitless possibilities to complement any interior. These Full Twist armchairs would be great with a cafe or breakfast table, a game table or cocktail / coffee table, or as guest chairs across from a desk. Also consider use in a conference or meeting room, break room, or office lobby. These side chairs would style well in a Mid-Century Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary, Hollywood Regency or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Being highly durable, this set of armchairs would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Condition: Very good condition, very minimal wear to fabric and frames ready for use. Measurements:  Depth 24" Width 23 ¹/2" Overall height 30" Seat height 18" Arm height 25".

About Herman Miller (Retailer)

No other business of its kind did more than the Herman Miller Furniture Company to introduce modern design into American homes. Working with legendary designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Alexander Girard, the Zeeland, Michigan-based firm fostered some of the boldest expressions of what we now call Mid-Century Modern style. In doing so, Herman Miller produced some of the most beautiful, iconic and, one can even say, noblest furniture of the past seven decades.

Founded in 1923, Herman Miller was originally known for grand historicist bedroom suites: heavily ornamented wood furniture that appealed to a high-minded, wealthier clientele. The company—named for its chief financial backer—began to suffer in the early 1930s as the Great Depression hit, and D. J. De Pree, the company’s CEO, feared bankruptcy. In 1932, aid came in the form of Gilbert Rohde, a self-taught furniture designer who had traveled widely in Europe, absorbing details of the Art Deco movement and other modernist influences. After persuading De Pree that the growing middle-class required smaller, lighter household furnishings, Rohde set a new course for Herman Miller, creating sleek chairs, tables and cabinetry that were the essence of the Streamline Moderne style.

Rohde died suddenly in 1944. The following year, De Pree turned to George Nelson, an architect who had written widely about modern furniture design. Under Nelson’s leadership, Herman Miller would embrace new technologies and materials and audacious biomorphic forms. Some of the pieces the company produced are now emblems of 20th century American design, including the Eames lounge chair and ottoman and Nelson’s Marshmallow sofa and Coconut chair. As you can see on these pages, such instantly recognizable furnishings have become timeless—staples of a modernist décor; striking, offbeat notes in traditional environments.
