About the Item

SERGIO RODRIGUES - 1956 - Rare and sculptural Bergere "Stella" armchair with solid rosewood legs and plywood seat frame covered in premium woven fabric. First upholstered armchair designed and produced by TABA. This is the 'bergere' Stella armchair, designed in 1956 by the renowned Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues and manufactured by his company, Oca (previously named Taba). The chair embodies the mid-century modern aesthetic and Rodrigues’ commitment to combining functionality with elegant design. The piece features a sculptural frame crafted from solid jacaranda wood, showcasing Rodrigues’ signature organic forms and attention to detail. The back legs are angled outward, providing both stability and visual dynamism. The wood frame embraces the upholstered body, creating a striking contrast between the warm, rich tones of the wood and the soft, textured fabric. The upholstery, in a neutral beige tone with a woven texture, complements the chair’s overall timeless appearance. The seat and backrest are generously padded, offering comfort while maintaining a streamlined, minimalist silhouette. The subtle curvature of the armrests and the reclined backrest emphasize ergonomic design while enhancing the piece’s inviting nature. This armchair exemplifies Sergio Rodrigues’ pioneering approach to Brazilian furniture, blending modernist principles with traditional craftsmanship and local materials. It is a celebrated piece of Brazilian design history, valued for its elegance and cultural significance. Item catalogued in the book Sergio Rodrigues - Icatu - pages 125 and 270 Measurements: W80 x D83 x H91cm The armchairs were reupholstered maintaining the original design, replacing the old fabric with a new premium woven fabric in shades of beige, green and antique yellow. The solid rosewood structure was never broken and never needed restoration, only polishing, replacing the old varnish with new, using shellac as was the process used by Brazilian artisans at the time in Brazil.
