About the Item

Awesome vintage Mid-Century Modern pair of DCM chairs by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller with chrome frames & black bentwood back & seats. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, they have been totally refinished & a couple of screw holes were filled & the rubber gromets on the back have been repaired. In some lights one spot on the back of one chair where the screw hole was filled the repair is visible. Any further work would have sanded through the veneer. It does not detract from their overall beauty. Priced as such. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Designed in 1945, Production Late 20th Century. You trying to slide into our DCM’s???? LOL… Who could blame you?? And we have a DOUBLE delight for your DCM viewing pleasure!! This is a pair of the ICONIC DCM or “Dining Chair Metal” chairs comprised of black painted bentwood seats & backs and chrome bases. They were designed by famed furniture designers husband & wife couple Charles & Ray Eames in 1945. The design uses two pieces of molded plywood and chrome or metal rods for support creating what has been called “supreme body-cradling comfort.” The Eames’s felt it was important that their designs followed a body’s natural contours & were flexible with a person’s movements. And these chairs are nothing short of exhibiting supreme comfort, a wide range of versatility, and an epic presence. They’re going to be fabulous side chairs in your bedroom, extra seating in the family or living room, study or den, or in your sitting room with an accent table between. They are the EPITOME of Mid-Century Modern MAGNIFICENCE!!! Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and were married in 1941. They moved together to California and continued their design work they began together at Cranbrook. A commission, which they acquired from the government during WWII to produce molded plywood splints and stretchers, launched a career producing iconic mid-century modern furnishings which are still fresh and sought after today. The Eames and their association with Herman Miller were the partnership of the century. If you want to learn more about Charles and Ray please visit Eames Office, the Eames Official website. Herman Miller started life as Star furniture Co. in Zeeland, Michigan in 1905, a producer of high-quality furniture. In 1919 the became Michigan Star Furniture Co, and then in 1923, when long time employee Dirk Jan De Pree and his father-in-law purchased 51% of the company stock, it was renamed Herman Miller Furniture Company. And remained so until the 1960s when it became Herman Miller, Inc. Until the 1930s they produced only traditional wood furniture, but the Great Depression caused a need for change, and they hired modernist Gilbert Rohde who took the company in a new successful direction. Upon Rohde’s death in 1944 he was replaced by none other than the renowned George Nelson. Working with the likes of not only Charles and Ray Eames but Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard, and Robert Propst, to name just a few, Nelson led Herman Miller to became one of the finest names in furniture and design. Charles and Ray Eames had the vision of making a better world. One in which things were designed to bring pleasure into our lives. This pair of DCM chairs can do that for you!
