About the Item

1941 Fully Restored Danish Hans J. Wegner Oak Dining Chair "City Hall Chair reupholstered in white fabric. The chair was one of Hans J. Wegners earliest designs made for the new iconic city hall in Aarhus that was finished in 1941 with Arne Jacobsen as architect and a young Hans J. Wegner as assistant in making a completely new city hall including lamps, furniture, ash trays and all other inventory . The design of furniture for the city hall was H.J. Wegner’s first major design task making this chair among the very first chairs designed by Wegner. The inscription under the seat captures the increase of the legs and is dated November 30th, 1957. The chair has been restored, refinished and reupholstered to ensure that it´s in very good condition. Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is in the absolute top league Danish designers, and among the few artists that have had a whole museum opened solely to themselves. He is particularly known for his around 500 chairs, where straight designs, good functionality and beautful looks are united to perfection. Wegners further development shown in his China Chair from 1945 brought his reputation to an internatioal top level, since this model during the 1961 US election was exposed on national US television during a transmssion of a discussion between president candidates Kennedy and Nixon. Furthermore the founder of Danish furniture design modernism was known worldwide for his rocking chair J16 and the JH513 chair.
