Mid-century Modern “Sabara” Side Tables in Rosewood Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil

About the Item

Size: H56.0, W77.0, D52.0 (cm) | H22.0, W30.3, D20.5 (in) The name of this model is called “Sabará” and was designed by Sergio Rodrigues and produced by Oca in 1955. These two side tables are made with Brazilian rosewood (also known as jacaranda) and feature three drawers and chrome knobs that keep the structure together. The rosewood has a deep, dark, and rich tone with beautiful natural wood grain. One side table has a lighter wood tone than the other and they look great together. In addition, the wood has been refinished and is now in excellent condition. The side tables have a very clean and minimalist design to it which allows it to fit in any mid-century, modern, contemporary or farmhouse environment. This set is showcased in our showroom next to a blue sofa by Joaquim Tenreiro, a set of armchairs and coffee table by Jorge Zalszupin and a sculptural chair by Cimo and the vignette looks nothing less than amazing. Sergio Rodrigues was a Brazilian furniture designer and architect. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927, he studied architecture and worked in various design fields before founding his own furniture company in the 1950s. Rodrigues was known for using traditional Brazilian materials like wood and leather in his furniture designs, which gave his pieces a distinctly Brazilian aesthetic. He also drew inspiration from Brazilian culture and history, incorporating elements like the curving lines of Brazilian architecture and the colors and patterns of indigenous art. Additionally, he often looked to the natural beauty of Brazil for inspiration, using organic shapes and textures in his designs. Overall, Rodrigues's work reflected his deep appreciation for his country's rich cultural heritage and unique artistic traditions. Some of his most famous pieces include the Mole and the Oscar armchairs. Rodrigues's work helped to establish Brazilian modernism as a prominent design movement, and he continued to create innovative furniture designs throughout his career. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 86.
