Post-Modern Side Tables

POSTMODERN STYLE

Postmodern design was a short-lived movement that manifested itself chiefly in Italy and the United States in the early 1980s. The characteristics of vintage postmodern furniture and other postmodern objects and decor for the home included loud-patterned, usually plastic surfaces; strange proportions, vibrant colors and weird angles; and a vague-at-best relationship between form and function.

ORIGINS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Emerges during the 1960s; popularity explodes during the ’80s
  • A reaction to prevailing conventions of modernism by mainly American architects
  • Architect Robert Venturi critiques modern architecture in his Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966)
  • Theorist Charles Jencks, who championed architecture filled with allusions and cultural references, writes The Language of Post-Modern Architecture (1977)
  • Italian design collective the Memphis Group, also known as Memphis Milano, meets for the first time (1980)
  • Memphis collective debuts more than 50 objects and furnishings at Salone del Milano (1981)
  • Interest in style declines, minimalism gains steam

CHARACTERISTICS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Dizzying graphic patterns and an emphasis on loud, off-the-wall colors
  • Use of plastic and laminates, glass, metal and marble; lacquered and painted wood
  • Unconventional proportions and abundant ornamentation
  • Playful nods to Art Deco and Pop art

POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE POSTMODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Critics derided postmodern design as a grandstanding bid for attention and nothing of consequence. Decades later, the fact that postmodernism still has the power to provoke thoughts, along with other reactions, proves they were not entirely correct.

Postmodern design began as an architectural critique. Starting in the 1960s, a small cadre of mainly American architects began to argue that modernism, once high-minded and even noble in its goals, had become stale, stagnant and blandly corporate. Later, in Milan, a cohort of creators led by Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendinia onetime mentor to Sottsass and a key figure in the Italian Radical movement — brought the discussion to bear on design.

Sottsass, an industrial designer, philosopher and provocateur, gathered a core group of young designers into a collective in 1980 they called Memphis. Members of the Memphis Group,  which would come to include Martine Bedin, Michael Graves, Marco Zanini, Shiro Kuramata, Michele de Lucchi and Matteo Thun, saw design as a means of communication, and they wanted it to shout. That it did: The first Memphis collection appeared in 1981 in Milan and broke all the modernist taboos, embracing irony, kitsch, wild ornamentation and bad taste.

Memphis works remain icons of postmodernism: the Sottsass Casablanca bookcase, with its leopard-print plastic veneer; de Lucchi’s First chair, which has been described as having the look of an electronics component; Martine Bedin’s Super lamp: a pull-toy puppy on a power-cord leash. Even though it preceded the Memphis Group’s formal launch, Sottsass’s iconic Ultrafragola mirror — in its conspicuously curved plastic shell with radical pops of pink neon — proves striking in any space and embodies many of the collective’s postmodern ideals.

After the initial Memphis show caused an uproar, the postmodern movement within furniture and interior design quickly took off in America. (Memphis fell out of fashion when the Reagan era gave way to cool 1990’s minimalism.) The architect Robert Venturi had by then already begun a series of plywood chairs for Knoll Inc., with beefy, exaggerated silhouettes of traditional styles such as Queen Anne and Chippendale. In 1982, the new firm Swid Powell enlisted a group of top American architects, including Frank Gehry, Richard Meier, Stanley Tigerman and Venturi to create postmodern tableware in silver, ceramic and glass.

On 1stDibs, the vintage postmodern furniture collection includes chairs, coffee tables, sofas, decorative objects, table lamps and more.

Grey Side Table by Kasanai Dimensions: D 35 x W 30 x H 59 cm. Materials: Concrete, wood, recycled paper. 8 kg. The fusion of sturdiness and elegance, along with the blend of archaism and modernity. More than just a surface for placing objects, these tables are functional pieces of art that effortlessly become focal points within any room. Crafted with an eco-friendly mixture of cement, recycled paper, glue, and paint, this table undergoes meticulous experimentation to achieve a material closely resembling wood in its properties. The result is a natural texture and strength that ensures durability, setting it apart as a unique and sustainable piece. One remarkable attribute of this material is its slight elasticity. Unlike rigid materials that may be prone to splitting or crumbling under pressure, this table material exhibits a flexible nature, providing a level of resilience that enhances its longevity. Nopper Side Table by Bram Kerkhofs
Located in Geneve, CH
Nopper side table by Bram Kerkhofs Dimensions: D 82 x W 46 x H 84cm Materials:Stainless steel. Nopper is a modular system for building a cupboard or a desk. The construction originated from research into plastic building toy blocks for children. The plastic parts with small studs can easily be attached to each other. This principle has been simplified by attaching four or more studs above and below a shelf and clamping a loose leg between them. Nopper can be assembled in different ways. Playing with proportions and positions in its parts gives freedom to an endless amount of formal constructions from minimal to more baroque. Nopper, obviously, can be made to measure. Lenghts, depth, height, the amount of layers and the dimensions and position of the different parts can be discusses. Proposals and quotations can be provided on request. BRAM KERKHOFS (° 1977) is a Belgian furniture designer looking for new forms and methods to challenge the functionality and flexibility of a furniture piece. Educated as a goldsmith he is fascinated by connections, hinges, knots and joints, and especially by the functional opportunities they generate. His work is filled with mathematical principles resulting in intelligible algorithms to make them understandable. He draws particular attention to the relationship between construction and material, bringing simplicity into complexity, with a lasting alertness to the final function. This time-intensive design and development process results in innovative construction systems automatically expressing his signature. Many of his designs must be seen in a bigger picture, as parts to a whole, in which he explores the endless possibilities for links, combinations and variations. Bram wants to clarify complex constructions and gives the consumer and the spectator insight into his thinking process. That is why his work partly revolves around people, as the manipulators...

Sculpted Side Table 'Human Element II' Collin Velkoff
Located in Geneve, CH
Human Element, Excavation II, 2017 Granite and gypsum cement Measures: 80 x 32 x 48 cm Edition - Unique work ‘Human Element’ is a project that explores the influence material has on the human condition and how our consciousness is derived from our relationship with materials. By using cement and anchoring forms to stone, he wants to create a sense of familiarity and comfort. Through the manipulation of form, balance, and texture, Collin Townsend Velkoff wants his sculptures to convey a feeling of unease and tension which communicates our relationship with materials and our dependency on the environment. For these sculptures, he has developed a sand casting technique that allows him to cast unique cement forms onto organic stone forms buried beneath the sand. After the cement cures the two materials are locked together and the object is then dug out by hand. Stones are selected from nature and construction sites, these stones dictate the shape, color, and forms on the cement pieces that will cast onto the stones. Each piece is unique.
