Important Baroque painting attributable to the hand of the great Roman old master Giacinto Brandi. It depicts San Giovannino who, with an expression of rare beauty and intensity, turns his gaze toward us who observe this small masterpiece. Giacinto Brandi (1621 – 19 January 1691) was an Italian painter from the Baroque era, active mainly in Rome and Naples. Born in Rome,he was part of the studio of Alessandro Algardi, a noted sculptor who noted that Brandi was more suited to painting. He joined the studio of Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. He traveled to Naples from 1638, and by 1647 had returned to Rome to work under Giovanni Lanfranco, where Brandi befriended Mattia Preti. The two artists would later on, often collaborate. His works are well distributed among baroque Churches of Rome including San Carlo al Corso ceiling frescoes (1670–1671), San Silvestro in Capite, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a canvas of Sant'Andrea (1650) in Santa Maria in Via Lata a painting of Martyrdom of the Forty (1660) for the Chiesa delle Santissima Stimmate di San Francesco a Coronation of the Virgin (1680) which serves as main altarpiece for the church of Gesù e Maria, a canvas of the Drunkedness of Noah in the Galleria Corsini, an Assumption (1655) for Santa Maria in Organo in Verona a fresco from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1651–1653) for Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, and a Martyrdom of San Biagio for the church of San Carlo ai Catinari a Visione del beato Giovanni di San Facondo (1656) and a Estasi della beata Rita da Cascia (1660) in the Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio San Rocco intercede per i malati di peste (1673) and San Rocco in gloria (1674) in the Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo; Compianto sul Cristo morto (1675–76) in the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. This is an original etching by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, circa 1640, of a Young Man Looking Down to the Right. It is the only known state and belongs to the series known as 'Studies of Heads in Oriental Headdress'. Signed (in monogram) in the plate in the upper right 'G Castiglione Genovese.'

In this work, Castiglione offers us an exquisite portrait of a young man. This small etching shows all the hallmarks of Castiglione's style: incredibly detailed etching marks that result in a wonderful play of light and shadow. The angle of the head and the lively floating feather in the young man's hat show us a figure in movement, pausing to look at something the viewer can only guess at. That such a small collection lines and cross-hatchings can evoke so much is a testament to Castiglione's genius.
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette.
Castiglione was a brilliant draftsman and pioneered the development of the oil sketch (often using a mixture of mediums) as a finished work.
He is credited with having invented the monotype in 1648, the only printmaking technique to be an Italian invention, making over twenty over the succeeding years. His most popular and influential prints were a series of exotic heads, mostly of vaguely Oriental males, but also of women.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was profoundly influenced by foreigners. He first studied with local artists in his native Genoa, absorbing not only Tuscan Mannerism and Caravaggism but also the style of Peter Paul Rubens, who had worked in Genoa. From 1621, Castiglione also worked in Anthony van Dyck's Genoa studio. Early on, he was attracted to Flemish animal painting. Though he painted portraits, historical pieces and landscapes, Castiglione excelled in rural scenes with animals and influenced Italy's animal painting specialists. By 1634, Castiglione was in Rome, where he remained for about ten years. After returning to Genoa for a time, he worked for the Mantuan court in 1648, which had also employed Rubens. The shaped plaque has a raised molded border decorated with a series of alternating painted panels of flowers and Chinese auspicious objects. The central scene is painted with a slightly off-center table with a vase filled with flowers and a large parrot perched on the branches. Several flying bugs can be seen around the flowers. To the left is a gardener with two watering pots at his feet. The whole in a puce, yellow and green palette. The top is surmounted with a blue shell pierced with a suspension hole. The exterior rim of the plaque in blue.
Dimensions: 8 7/8 inches high x 9 3/4 inches x 1/2 inch depth.

This magnificent engraving depicts a fishing scene in the middle of a landscape with lush vegetation. In the foreground of this scene is a man standing fishing. At his feet a young woman and a child are looking at the water. Further back on the right, there is another fishing scene, this time with two men. The whole is immersed in nature. In the background is a shepherd with a herd of cattle.
This scene was first painted by Francesco Zuccarelli. He was an 18th century painter and engraver. He began his training in Rome and then in Florence as a figure painter. Alter He moved to Venice. He was noticed for his talent in the art of landscape. He benefited from the protection of the English consul Joseph Smith, for whom he produced numerous works.
This engraving is made by Francesco Bartolozzi who is an engraver of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. He is an Italian who had 3 years of training in painting.
