Mixed Media on Paper and Wood Behind Aryl Glass Mimmo Paladino, Italy 2009
Located in Salzburg, AT
Mixed media on paper and wood behind aryl glass Mimmo Paladino, Italy 2009 (2/20) Mimmo Paladino found art inspired by his uncle, a painter who introduced him to traditional techniques at an early age. After attending the 1964 Venice Biennale, he made the decision to become an artist. He studied painting at the Liceo Artistico in Benevento from 1964 to 1968 and, influenced by Max Ernst and Paul Klee, experimented with collages, frottages and non-objective paintings. In 1968 he finished his academic training with a diploma and began to paint freely. In the early to Mid-1970s, the artist dealt almost exclusively with mythological themes, such as the Icarus myth, which he translated into drawings. In the process, Paladino developed his own fresco-like technique, significant for his later work, in which he painted large-scale walls with pastel colors. Paladino had his first exhibition in 1977 at the "Galerie Lucio Amelio" in Naples. Several trips to Milan as well as contact with the art critic Tommaso Trini and the gallery owner Franco Toselli soon made Paladino known nationwide. In Toselli's gallery he presented his murals for the first time in 1978. That same year he traveled to New York, where he met Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente. Several trips to Brazil followed. In 1980 Mimmo Paladino, together with the publisher Emilio Mazzoli, published a book with texts by Achille Bonito Oliva. The art critic Oliva had introduced the term Transavanguardia at the end of the 1970s for the style of the new movement, mainly characterized by young Italian artists such as Chia, Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Paladino, who found parallels in Germany with the Neue Wilde. In the same year Paladino participated in the Aperto 80 Biennale in Venice and in 1982 in the Biennale of Sydney. In the following years Paladino had exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum in Basel and at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna. In 1999 he had an extensive retrospective at the Lenbachhaus in Munich and in the same year he became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato dedicated an extensive retrospective to him in 2002/2003. Works by Mimmo Paladino can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist lives and works in Milan and Benevento, Italy. PLANT Mimmo Paladino's works are often mixed media on paper or wood pre-sketched with drawing pencil, using all traditional means. His oeuvre includes watercolor, oil painting, and tempera, as well as collage, frottage, engraving, drypoint, or woodcut. Paladino's paintings are often untitled. Examples 1987: The Perfect Room 1992: hortus conclusus, horse sculpture in Benevento, Chiostro di San Domenico 1993: montagna bianca 2002: Le chien 2004: ciclismo 2008: Porta di Lampedusa - Porta d'Europa, iron sculpture covered with ceramic plates on the beach of Lampedusa in memory of the migrants who lost their lives at sea EXHIBITIONS 1979: Transavanguardia, Turin 1980: Venice Biennale, Venice 1982: documenta 7, Kassel 1982: Biennale of Sydney, Sydney 1984: Merianpark, Basel, sculpture in the 20th century...

In a departure from his split bamboo kite series, this work on stretched canvas entitled "Study in Red" layers textured paper and silken fragments within a rosy red color story. Tracey Emin’s 20-Year Retrospective Lithographic Poster
Located in Pewsey, GB
Tracey Emin’s 20-Year Retrospective Lithographic Poster published by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Publisher: Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Publication Date: 2nd August 2008 Dimensions: Height: 70 cm Width: 50 cm Edition: Open edition but the print run was limited to 500 impressions. Condition: Excellent The provocative imagery chosen for the poster advertising her first landmark retrospective held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art from 2 nd August to 9 th November 2008 not only reflects the defiance behind the often-sexually provocative attitudes depicted in her work but also resonates with the feminist tenets she has advanced throughout her career with her wide-ranging creations. It is after the original photograph of Tracey Emin taken by Scott Douglas MacNee. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, erring on the side of caution, only printed 500 imprints of this poster, which were all sold out in a matter of days. Tracey Emin was born in 1963 to Turkish Cypriot parents to Margate in Kent. Her young life was a mixture of promiscuous sex and self-destructive activities as she moved between different men and art schools. Rape, abortion, family tragedy and a host of unpleasant diseases figure in her early life and most of these tragic events were well-documented in the ‘20 Years’ Retrospective held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. She was the ‘enfant terrible’ of the group that came to be known as the YBAs in the 1980s (Young British Artists) which included such artists as Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Sam Taylor...

Una 'Articolo Indeterminativo' Wood and Glass Bar Cabinet
Located in Roma, IT
The bar cabinet wall piece is the second piece of the collection Una (Articolo Indeterminativo) by Stefano Marolla. The name of the collection comes from the Italian grammar where the indeterminative article precedes a non-identified noun. The objects play on the ambiguity of the matter than can deceive the eye: a sturdy element like wood, hand-curved and levigated, looks like a light tapestry. The curves and the soft drapery of the wood are inspired by a long and attentive study on the usage of drapery in art’s history, going back from the ancient Greece to Bernini’s sculptures...

Richard Hirsch Encaustic Painting of Nothing #28, 2012
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's encaustic Painting of Nothing #28 is made of ceramic raw materials, dry pigment and wax. This piece is part of his ongoing Painting of Nothing Series. Hirsch applies the waxy mix with a brush onto redwood plywood backed structures with two-inch wood strips all around and used various torches to layer, flux, bubble and blend. "Waxy and very tactile, they are probably the work Mark Rothko would have done had he spent most of his life in clay. Hirsch’s paintings have the nuance, subtle texture, and color shifts that become evident in blown-up photographs of his ceramic objects as well as a similar presence." Signed and dated en verso by the artist. This painting ship directly from the artist’s studio in Rochester, NY. (Literature: "With Fire: Richard Hirsch, A Life Between Chance and Design", Scott Meyer (Author), RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press 2012 - "The Paintings" pgs. 102 - 105) Richard Hirsch brief bio: In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence. In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades. Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Significant shows include; The Evolution of American Art in Craft Media Since 1945; Echoes: Historical References in Contemporary Ceramics; American Ceramics Now; Raku: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression; and Convergences: The Presence of the Past in Contemporary American Ceramics...

It is an important food source for spectacled bears with extraordinary turquoise flowers, an incredibly rare flower colour. The flowers are pollinated by super-heroic little hummingbirds which can fly at speeds which, relative to body length, are greater than any other vertebrate, with wing-speeds of over 80 beats per second. This design is part of The Beatrice Edit, a collaboration between biologist/designer Susy Paisley and her daughter Beatrice, who is a budding interior designer. and avowed minimalist. One day, in a conversation about their different tastes, it occurred to them to do an edit of Newton Paisley designs for people who, like Beatrice, think less is more in their interiors. Best-selling Newton Paisley designs were reimagined as one-colour 18th century toile de Jouys; favourite botanical details from other designs were reconfigured in simple airy geometrical repeats. In this, Susy and Beatrice found themselves inspired by the beautiful folk motifs of Ukrainian embroidery...

A Multi-Tiered Carving of a Lotus Flower 46"
Located in Chicago, IL
The lotus flower has been a symbol of spiritual purity and enlightenment ever since the time of the Buddha. These wooden lotus flowers are meticulous reproductions of ceiling decorations found in Thai temples. In some temples, lotuses are painted directly on the ceiling. In other temples, they're elaborately carved, covered in gold and placed in the center of ceiling panels. Either way, their purpose is the same -to draw the eye of the worshiper toward heaven. . According to a Zen verse, “may we exist in muddy water with purity, like a lotus." The lotus grows out of the mud, rising upward to bloom in the sunlight, clean and perfect. These lotuses are hand-carved from wood and finished by artisans in Chiang Mai, Thailand, according to ancient designs. Shown here: a large multi-tiered lotus with an antique wood finish.
