"A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills" by Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...

Black Zevenbergen Naked Neck Chickens - A Striking 19th-Century Poultry Print
Located in Langweer, NL
Black Zevenbergen Naked Neck Chickens A Striking 19th-Century Poultry Print This rare and visually striking 19th-century chromolithograph, titled Zwarte Zevenbergsche Naakthalzen met Rozenkam, depicts the Black Zevenbergen Naked Neck, a rare and distinctive breed known for its featherless neck. Published in 1888 as part of Geïllustreerd Hoenderboek by Elsevier, this illustration is one of 40 finely detailed poultry prints based on the artwork of Christian Förster. The book, edited for the Dutch market by Dr. A. C. Oudemans Jzn., served as a key reference on poultry farming, covering topics from coop construction to disease prevention. The Naked Neck, or Turken, is an unusual breed that originated in Central Europe and was further developed in the Netherlands and Belgium. Despite their turkey-like appearance, these birds are pure chickens. The lack of feathers on their necks results from a dominant gene, making them particularly suited for warm climates, as they regulate heat better than fully feathered breeds. They were valued for their dual-purpose qualities, excelling in both meat production and egg-laying. This illustration beautifully captures the unique appearance of the Zevenbergen variety, with its deep black plumage exhibiting an iridescent sheen and the stark contrast of its bare red neck. The rooster stands tall, its robust frame and rose comb giving it an air of confidence, while the hen, foraging in the foreground, showcases the breed’s characteristic practicality. The lush pastoral backdrop, painted with soft atmospheric perspective, adds depth and naturalism to the composition. ### The Art of Chromolithography This print was produced using chromolithography, a labor-intensive printing method that involved layering multiple colors onto a stone plate, each requiring precise registration to achieve depth and vibrancy. This technique was highly prized in the late 19th century for its ability to create richly detailed and colored illustrations, making it ideal for scientific and agricultural publications. The meticulous shading and texture in this print highlight the exceptional skill of the artist and printer in rendering lifelike poultry portraits. Condition Summary This lithograph remains in good condition, retaining its vivid colors and intricate details. There are minor signs of age, including light foxing along the margins, which is typical for prints of this era. The paper is stable with no significant tears or creases. Framing Tips To preserve and elegantly display this historical poultry illustration, consider the following framing suggestions - Use an acid-free mat in ivory or light cream to complement the warm tones of the print - A dark wood or black frame will enhance the contrast of the deep plumage and red neck - UV-resistant museum glass is recommended to protect the print from light damage - Position the print in a space with stable humidity and avoid direct sunlight to maintain its condition This print is a fascinating piece of poultry history, showcasing a rare breed that continues to intrigue chicken enthusiasts and breeders today. Its combination of scientific accuracy and artistic detail makes it a valuable addition to any collection of antique animal illustrations...

19th Century French Carved Walnut Royal Coat of Arms of Canada in Gilt Frame
Located in Dallas, TX
Crafted in France circa 1880 and set on a colorful plaid background fabric, the elegant framed shield features the coat of arms of Canada. Hand carved in solid fruitwood, the detailed Blason is in excellent condition with a rich walnut patina; decorate a man's office or study with this fine antique crest! The Arms of Canada also known as the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada is, since 1921, the official coat of arms of the Canadian monarch and thus also of Canada. It is closely modeled after the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom with French and distinctive Canadian elements replacing or added to those derived from the British version. The maple leaves in the shield, blazoned "proper", were originally drawn green but were redrawn red in 1957 and a circlet of the Order of Canada was added to the arms for limited use in 1987. The shield design forms the monarch's royal standard and is also found on the Canadian Red Ensign. The Flag of the Governor General of Canada, which formerly used the shield over the Union Flag, now uses the crest of the arms on a blue field. The arms are embossed on the covers of Canadian passports, in order to legally signify and symbolize that the bearer is traveling under the aid of the Crown of Canada. A Mari Usque Ad Mare (English: From Sea to Sea) is the Canadian national motto. The phrase comes from the Latin Vulgate translation of Psalm 72:8 in the Bible: "Et dominabitur a mari usque ad mare, et a flumine usque ad terminos terrae". (King James Bible...
