Advertising poster designed by René Leverd in 1910 for the promotion of Gladiator brand cycles.
The Gladiator Cycles company, then Gladiator-Clément (1896) is a French company manufacturing cycles and automobiles established in Pré-Saint-Gervais between 1891 and 1920. In 1895, Gladiator produced its first motorized tricycle whose combustion was based of naphtha. In 1896, Adolphe Clément, Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, and Harry John Lawson, associated with Harvey du Cros, owner of Dunlop, take stakes in the company and undertake to create a conglomerate.
René Leverd is a French watercolourist, poster artist and illustrator. He received a silver medal at the Salon des artistes français of 1891, and many other awards in the salons.

This is a very scarce WWI Work Relief Fund poster featuring the Harvard Radios competing against the Princeton Aviators. The game, held on November 23, 1918, was a benefit football game to raise money for the war effort.
The poster dynamically depicts two football players mid-action. Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. The poster was illustrated by the artist J. Liello. His signature is printed in stone, visible on the left side of the composition.
The following was written about the match in the November 23, 1918 issue of The New York Times: “Today marks the climax of the most irregular football season the gridiron sport has ever known… Here in New York there will be an unusually attractive football bill. In the late 19th century, following the advent of text-heavy posters printed from woodblocks for use in taverns and shop windows, hand-drawn poster art had become commonplace in regions such as France, England and the United States. Well-known illustrators were commissioned to produce decorative posters to advertise political campaigns, theatrical events, books, household goods and other items. Early poster artists used a printmaking technique called lithography, which sees drawings or paintings created on a stone (or metal) surface with an oil-based substance, such as a greasy crayon or tusche (an oily wash). The image is eventually affixed to the surface by means of a chemical reaction, and ink adheres to certain sections of the surface while non–image areas are made to repel the ink.
If you wanted a color lithograph in the early days, the number of stones prepared had to match the number of colors you commissioned for the poster. French painter Jules Chéret, widely known as the father of the modern poster, designed some of history's most popular lithographic posters that featured color. Today, Chéret’s art is highly collectible, along with original works by Czech painter and decorative artist Alphonse Mucha, whose posters advertising theatrical productions helped define Art Nouveau.
Over time, poster artists transitioned to more advanced techniques. Using silkscreens, woodblocks and photolithography, painters and illustrators printed larger quantities at a faster rate.

A practical conservation method is to have the work mounted on archival, acid-free paper and thin artist’s canvas, then enclosing it in a sturdy frame.
