This mine and others in the area that came before it, played a crucial role in the development of the United States of America from the Revolutionary War, through the industrial revolution up until the 1970’s when the mine was flooded during Hurricane Agnes and closed operations. Pfoutz traveled through the hills near his home and along the Susquehanna River in search of scenes. He began painting with a brush when he was fourteen, but added a palette knife after suffering an eye injury.
