Native American on Horseback Edouard Drouot
By Etling Paris, Edouard Drouot
Located in Newark, England
“Indien à cheval” (“Indian on horseback) From our Sculpture collection, we are thrilled to introduce this good sized Native American on Horseback by Edouard Drouot. The Bronze beautifully cast with a rectangular plinth base elevating the bronze from the surface with a Native American in full dress peering upon horseback bearing a weapon. The rider seated upon an animal skin saddle and the horse in naive reins as it walks across the rocky base up to a buffalo skull. The Bronze expertly sculpted by the renowned French Sculptor Edouard Drouot finished with hand chiselling and polychrome patination cast by the famous foundry Etling Paris. The Native American on Horseback by Edouard Drouot dates to the early 20th century and the start of the Art Deco period in Europe circa 1920. Edouard Drouot (1859-1945) was a renowned French sculptor who trained under Mathurin Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Drouot began exhibiting from 1889 at the Paris Salon and his work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Edmond Laurent Etling (1878-1940) was a French art dealer, gallery owner, and designer known for producing high-quality decorative items in the Art Deco style. He specialised in manufacturing exquisite pieces made from bronze, ceramics, and art glass. Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of copper with approximately 12–12.5% tin and often with the addition of other metals (including aluminium, manganese, nickel, or zinc) and sometimes non-metals, such as phosphorus, or metalloids such as arsenic or silicon depending on the age of the bronze and its origin. The additions of other metals produce a range of alloys that are usually harder than copper alone and carry useful properties such as strength. The earliest known use of bronze dates to the 5th millennium BCE from Iranian plateau, the bronze mix consists of arsenical copper and copper-arsenide. The earliest tin-copper-alloy recovered is dated to circa 4650 BCE and was found in Plocnik, Serbia. It is believed to have been smelted from a natural tin-copper ore. Animalia sculptures...

Antique French Bronze Pheasant and Weasel by Jules Moigniez
By Jules Moigniez
Located in Newark, England
Pheasant and Weasel From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this French Bronze Pheasant by Jules Moigniez. The French Bronze of good scale cast with a large male Pheasant clambering upon a rocky outcrop startled by a Weasel hiding within the foliage. The Pheasant naturalistically cast with individual feathers visible, sharp claws and spurs above the foot. The Weasel sits hidden in the foliage visible from viewing the French Bronze from the side as it shocks the Pheasant. The French Bronze signed to the front left on a rock face J. Moigniez (Jules Moigniez). The bronze sculpture dates to the late 19th century belle époque period Circa 1870. Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was born at Senlis, Oise, just north of Paris, France on the 28 May 1835 the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez studied under Paul Comoléra (1813-1890) a specialist Animalia sculptor. It is clear that Moigniez’s career in Animalia was passed down from his tutors specialism in Animalia and in particular birds. Moigniez father bought a foundry specifically to cast his son’s sculptures. This gave Moigniez a huge advantage compared to other artist as it greatly reduced his costs during manufacturing and increased productivity keeping the process in-house. Moigniez throughout his career became known for this Animalia sculptures...

Vintage Art Deco Bronze Dancing Girl After Chiparus Mid 20th C
Located in London, GB
This is an eye-catching Vintage Art Deco Revival bronze dancing girl dating from the mid 20th century. This beautiful piece is a 20th Century recast of a sculpture created by the famous Romanian sculptor Demetre Chiparus. Made by the classical lost wax, or 'cire perdue', method, the stautue stands on a black marble base. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 50 x Width 22 x Depth 16 & Weight 6 kg Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 8 inches x Width 9 inches x Depth 6 inches & Weight 13.2 lbs Lost Wax Method sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture. In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised. Demetre H. Chiparus was born in Romania in 1886, attended school in Italy, then, shortly before World War I moved to Paris. He attended school at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under two talented sculptors Anonin Mercier and Jean Boucher, who provided him the opportunity to learn the trade. He later began to experiment with small bronze sculptures and produce small bronze works, exhibiting his small sculptures and, in 1914, was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais. Many of Paris’ most affluent began to take notice of his work after World War One and the demand for his sculptures quickly increased. Chiparus was captivated by dancers, in particular influenced by Diaghiley’s Ballets Russes and Leon Bakst’s stage designs. A few of his famous sculptures were Starfish Dancer...

A beautiful Art Deco Revival sculpture of Diana the Huntress with Hounds, after Josef Lorenzl, dating from the 20th Century. The decorative sculpture of silvered cast-bronze features a naked Diana the Huntress, with bow and a pair of hunting dogs, standing on a sloping naturalistic base raised on a rectangular black marble plinth. This high-quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. This is a splendid bronze sculpture and it will no doubt become the centrepiece of your collection. Condition: In really excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation of condition. Dimensions in cm: Height 30 cm x Width 11 cm x Depth 18.5 cm Weight 3 kg Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot x Width 4 inches x Depth 7 inches Weight 6.6 lbs Josef Lorenzl (1 September 1892 – 15 August 1950) was an Austrian sculptor and ceramicist of the Art Deco period. While at the Vienna Arsenal, Lorenzl produced many bronze and chryselephantine sculptures, and captivated by the female form he became famed for his shapely dancing girls with long, elegant legs and closed eyes. These pieces of his were signed "Enzl", "Lor", "R. Lor", "Renz" or "Renzl". Occasionally the name "Crejo" appears on his pieces, Crejo having been a painter and one of Lorenzl's friends, and who sometimes applied colour to the pieces. These joint works are sought-after items. The large majority of Lorenzl's figurines were attached to Brazilian green onyx plinths. Lorenzl's talents also extended to being a gifted ceramicist. He produced pieces for Goldscheider, working from a studio on company grounds. As with his chryselephantine pieces, his ceramic works were in great demand and became the embodiment of the Art Déco period. Famous amongst these is "The Butterfly Girl" after the famous dancer Niddy Impekoven...

Ancient Egyptian Monumental Temple Sphinxes
Located in London, GB
A pair of monumental limestone sphinxes of Pharaoh Nectanebo I, from the processional avenue of the Serapeum of Memphis, 30th Dynasty, circa 379 - 360 BC. The sphinxes of the Serapeum have captivated travellers since Roman times. However, despite their significance, they are conspicuously absent from the collections of most major museums. Indeed, their existence in private hands is so improbable, and their imitations so numerous, that the present sphinxes were assumed to be modern copies throughout their recent ownership history. Finally recognised and conserved after an extraordinary chance discovery at a garden furniture sale...
