This minimalist, elegant landscape archival pigment print was created by Shelly Lependorf and Stan Shire as part of their "Horizon Fields" series. The image is printed in a warm sepia hue, with accents of green and gray. In the photograph, sea and sky meet at a misty horizon, which marked by a distant island. On the right hand side, a pier extends toward a vanishing point.
Artists' statement:
The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision.
Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting.
Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography.
The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition.
The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years.
The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist.

About the series:
Elliott Kaufman conveys the haunting magnificence of forgotten buildings in the Abandoned series. Architectural marvels once home to heartbreaking operas, spectacular gatherings, or a loving family now sit vacant and linger in fading memories of the past with each new crack of paint, crumbling brick, or falling beam. Through his lens, Kaufman captures the remnants of these majestic structures, romanticizing what once was for viewers in the present day. This series won 2nd place in the ASMP National Competition.

In this series, Halliday captures the interiors of his home and studio. The photograph depicts a plaster wall that has been patched, creating cloud like designs on this raw bit of painted wall over the mantle piece. Pops of a soft mint green of the pieces of insulation on the mantle compliment the overall color palette. The white and golden yellows blur the line between photography and abstract art.

Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018
Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.”
Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic.
This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series.

ABOUT:
In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way.
This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat reclining in the pool with a drink. The black and white image evokes an extreme sense of nostalgia in its cinematic portraiture and supple texture. Though the figure of the woman is tauntingly beautiful, the drink is the darkest tone, nearing black, and is centered in the frame. With this, we are reminded of the refreshing notes of summer and the utter serenity of taking the day off to relax.
The show’s imagery is evocative of all eras of summer, thus any viewer can relate or connect to one of the images. As Rice likes to say, “There’s something for everyone.” One image by Benjamin Heller details a strong owl flying past the camera, with a blurry, forested background. This photograph hints at the adventurous, nature-filled summer; one filled with hiking and treasure hunts. Another image by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj details a thin black woman in a round, textured skirt, grasping onto a white orb-like shape covering her head. This image evokes the sense of wanderlust that summer so often indulges and plays well into the selection of more obvious summer scenes that Rice has incorporated as well.

This modern, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artist duo Kahn & Selesnick in 2012-13. The print is part of the Truppe Fledermaus series that explores the chronicles of a the traveling circus group dressed as bats, skeletons, and other odd creatures that perform for animals and mythical beings along the countryside. Here, two members of Truppe Fledermaus are pictured traveling to their next destination across a barren landscape blanketed with sea grass and sand dunes. A skull masked man dressed in an old-fashioned grey vest and beige blouse flies a brown robed bat-like creature while waving a black top-hat in the direction of their departure. A clear blue sky extends into the background. The dark brown hues of the two characters creates interesting contrast against the blue sky and green landscape. The imagery depicts an imaginative narrative and encourages the viewer to continue the saga in their own minds. The pristine archival pigment print is complimented with a clean white frame measuring 17.5 x 17.5 x 2 inches.
