For Scout A, Very Good Dog: Modern Baroque Style Floral Still Life Digital Print
By Lisa A. Frank
Located in Hudson, NY
Archival digital print, edition of 50 34 x 29.5 inches unframed Lisa Frank’s new body of work produces complex arrangements of flowers and dark vegetation reminiscent of Baroque still lifes and tapestry. Frank stages, duplicates and then layers photographic elements to create work that keeps the viewer fixated in her realm of digitally manipulated imagination. In this piece, the artist has digitally collaged twisted vines, dried leaves, pink, yellow, and purple flowers, and turtle shells in intricate patterns to resemble a Baroque tapestry. The contemporary vertical digital print is available in additional sizes. Artist's Statement: I make large scale photographs that depict complex patterns. These patterns are composed from elements of nature and are presented in the form of traditional wallpaper...

Cherry Tomatoes (Contemporary Still Life Study in Light Box with Diffused Light)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
11.25 x 11.25 inches unframed Archival pigment print edition of 12 Some of David Halliday's most engaging works are those from his Box Series in which he merges traditional ideas about light and composition with contemporary experiments. In this series an empty cookie tin becomes a tiny studio for food objects. Halliday carefully styles his photographic subjects inside and, allowing only natural light to seep in through a circular window. The results feel less like still lifes and more like intimate portraits of human sustenance. In these photographs, the fleshy curves of a fig, the slick bodies of sardines, even the homeliest porcini mushrooms possess a degree of nobility, providing a refreshing contrast to the compulsive relationship we so often have with food, reminding us to slow down and savor with gratitude. In this particular image, the bright red tomato skins are gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting. About the work: The Past Still Present: A master of light, New Orleans photographer David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Using window...

CURRENT EXHIBITION - runs through June 25th, 2017. Any framed photographs purchased during the show will be available then. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current exhibition of the photograph. The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo photography exhibition by Pete Kelly. The opening reception will be held May 3, 2017 with the show running through June 25, 2017. Pete Kelly’s latest show admirably showcases the lush greenness, diverse landscape, and ever-fleeting light of the British terrain. We are invited to join his excursions throughout the country as he brings light to the captivating, idiosyncratic characteristics of the land. He captures the oddities of the landscape; solitary figures bathing in sunlight, silhouette of a frolicking Great Dane in the mist, and subtle remnants of a bygone era. Kelly’s incredibly unique, picturesque editing style further mythologizes his subjects, he meddles with an air of mystery that defines the viewers experience. Kelly employs a mixture of a single image with layers of photographs of textures. The feel and look of the end result pay homage to English romanticist landscape painters such as J.M.W Turner and Constable. Kelly applies varnish and then uses Photographic Encaustic wax over the print. He encases the archival pigment print in beeswax and damar resin; tree sap in its purest form. These organic components have been found to have preserving qualities by ancient Egyptians, which replace the need for glass over the photograph. The impersonality of a raw digital file is alleviated through this process and makes the image a ‘one off. Combining modern photographic and printing technology with ancient crafting techniques, Kelly
is the originator of art that is tactile, archival and organic. In one image entitled ‘Brabyns Autumn” examines man’s contemporaneously interruptive and complimentary relationship with the surrounding land, and zeros in on a serenity only manifested when man and nature successfully coexist. Small figures, animals, and dwellings found in the landscape are essential points of interest for Kelly. Using nature as a tool for fortifying scale and perspective, Kelly magnificently reinforces the grandiose essence of nature as opposed to the insignificant disposition of man. Kelly’s tiny subjects painted against a vast landscape offer a point of reference for our own trifling experiences and memories. Kelly's fascination with photography began at an early age. Born in England in 1966, grew up in West Germany. After leaving school he enrolled in a photography course with the Royal Air Force Photographic Unit, based in Wildenrath, Germany. Although this initial training lasted only six months, it established a life long passion and dedication to photography. Already an avid traveler, Kelly initially decided to return to the UK, to study Graphic Design and Advertising at Stockport College, before moving to America in 1987. After completing an Internship at an innovative commercial photography studio in the United States, worked as a Photographers Assistant; working closely with a range of photographers allowed him to intrinsically develop his own refined sense of aesthetic as well as develop and master photographic theory and technique. Pete has taught Photo Encaustic...

The Jolly Company (Modern Surrealist Photograph of Men in Sand Dune Landscape)
By Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick
Located in Hudson, NY
archival pigment print, edition of 5 10 x 10 inches unframed, 17.5 x 17.5 inches framed This modern, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artist duo Kahn & Selesnick in 2012-13. The print is part of the Truppe Fledermaus series that explores the chronicles of a the traveling circus group dressed as bats, skeletons, and other odd creatures that performer for animals and mythical beings along the countryside. Here, members of Truppe Fledermaus are pictured traveling to their next destination across a barren landscape blanketed with sea grass and sand dunes. The group caravans in an odd wagon contraption that is navigated by a robed bat-like creature at the helm. The creature's large brown constructed wings act as tillers and direct the caravan in the right direction. A skull masked man in a old-fashioned grey vest and red blouse is steering the bat-like creature with reins made of thick rope. Characters dressed in brown and red costume create beautiful contrast against the expansive blue sky, green sea grass, and beige sand. The imagery depicts an imaginative narrative and encourages the viewer to continue the saga in their own minds. The pristine archival pigment print is complimented with a clean white frame measuring 17.5 x 17.5 x 2 inches. About the work: The ultimate storytellers, who have been showing with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than 20 years, are Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick...

ABOUT: In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience. As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way. This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat...

Peabrook
By Patricia Heal
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 10. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. ABOUT: In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook. Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations. The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden. The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film. In another image, entitled “Sitting Room”, we see a positive image of a film negative. Most notable is the hanging rhinoceros head towering impressively over two antique sitting chairs...

Tea and Comfort: Contemporary Figurative Photograph of 1950's Housewife
By Newbold Bohemia
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary figurative photograph digital C-print, edition of 10 30 x 20 inches unframed This contemporary c-print pictures a classic 1950's housewife in a beautiful pink dress and pristine white gloves enjoying a cup of tea at a beautifully set table. The seemingly innocent imagery is given a sinister twist when one notices the box of pink and white pills set alongside the tea. The viewer is left wondering why the pills are placed on the table. One can't help but become suspicious of what the beautiful woman has planned. About work: Photography as a medium has a dual character. Since its introduction, artists have used it to produce both art as well as document the world around them. For Chicago artist Newbold Bohemia, photography is a little bit of both: his photo series have documented real life issues, presented in staged, then manipulated images from his imagination. In his playful yet devious new series, “In an Ideal World,” Bohemia visualizes the story of a rebellious 1950s woman in the domestic world. Even the name Newbold Bohemia is a fabrication. The artist’s namesake serves as a reminder to create art dedicated to the pillars of Bohemian society: Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love. All of these are present in his “In an Ideal World” series, set in a beautiful, idyllic version of the 1950s, where a blonde femme fatale-housewife comes to terms with life’s truths. As he captures her day to day chores, Bohemia comments on the not-so-idyllic reality of gender roles, and his heroine’s oppression and anger. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Bohemia is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson NY.

Apricots (Contemporary Still Life Study in Light Box with Diffused Light)
In this particular image, the softness of the apricot's fuzzy skin is gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting! About the work: The Past Still Present: A master of light, New Orleans photographer David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Using window...

Peony (Floral Still Life Photograph of Magenta Flower with Yellow Paint Details)
By Newbold Bohemia
Located in Hudson, NY
Modern still life photograph of magenta peony on a black background with thick yellow acrylic paint details Digital C-Print, edition of 10 30 x 30 inches unframed Newbold Bohemia offers a playful selection of images with his FLOWr series. Bohemia made these compositions by carefully capturing the graceful drips and squirts of bright yellow acrylic paint around bright magenta peony flower submerged in a water tank, which produced a mesmerizing arrangement of color, shape and form. The artist explains that with each image he seeks to “…create not only an image, but an entire world within my image.” Newbold Bohemia (born 1965, Evansville, Indiana) mainly creates photos, although his work shares as much in common with painting as it does photography. Rather than using the camera to record the world around him, Bohemia prefers to work against the journalistic nature of photography. He creates his own world from scratch. In his studio he arranges still-lifes, builds sets, hires actors, and lights the scene. After capturing the image he often further enhances the work through digital or mechanical manipulation before printing the final work. Although not formally trained as an artist, his work is heavily influenced by his education and work in psychology, marketing and graphic design. Visual organization and story telling are equally important to Newbold Bohemia, although one may take precedence over another is a particular body of work. His work often focuses on the everyday and mundane, as well as historical and societal references. Tension, conflict, and humor are often introduced to create new ways of seeing the world we think we know. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. He is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson, NY.
