ABOUT:
Your Nearest Exit May Be Behind You, a reference to the traditional pre-flight instructions of airline hostesses, is fine art photographer Micheal McLaughlin's collection of the sights found universally in the act of travelling between countries and continents. From dark Hong Kong skylines shot through hotel room windows to the familiar, scratched silver buttons of a New York subway elevator, the resulting images are what McLaughlin describes as being "as much of a peripheral view as they are a direct view of the world."
The minimalistic and boldly colorful images are highlighted by their size, which demonstrates a level of detail often missed by an initial glance. Some rectangular, some square, the images are each displayed in large-scale frames. A world traveler by profession, McLaughlin's new series of images is reminiscent of Ed Ruscha, Richard Diebenkorn, or Wayne Thiebaud, whom the artist cites as some of his many artistic inspirations.
The invitational image, entitled "Jorf Lasfar, Morocco", centers on a brightly-colored gas station, McLaughlin's pit stop on the way to the nearby city of Casablanca. Shot miles away from civilization, the small gas station is surrounded only by a vast sky of pink and blue sunset. The soft light of the sky juxtaposed against the artificial lights of the gas station gives a surreal effect to the otherwise commonplace subject. The painterly reflection of the lighting on the glistening concrete, meanwhile, contrasts drastically against the geometric, plastic structure of the gas station.
Across the ocean lies the inspiration for "Marshalltown, Iowa". The endless, grey-purple landscape of a barren cornfield peeks through a thick fog of winter. The cornfield stretches infinitely into the horizon, with only the vague trace of manicured rows of corn visible through the white frost on the ground. The muted grey sky above warns of an incoming storm, which McLaughlin was waiting to pass in his car at the time the image was captured. Shot through the car window, the soft, minimalistic image is a mysterious, other-worldly take on the farmlands of Middle America.
A third-generation Brooklynite, Micheal McLaughlin's interest in photography began at the tender age of 11. He attended the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (BFA, 1983), and now works as a New York-based advertising and editorial location photographer. Among others, his clients include IBM, Apple, and American Express. McLaughlin has received honors from Photo District News, Communication Arts, and the NY Art Directors Club. McLaughlin lists a wide array of artistic influences, from fellow photographers (Robert Frank, Harry Callahan, Diane Arbus) to the writings of authors such as William Faulkner, Graham Greene, and Eudora Welty.

ABOUT:
Every year, the gallery owner curates the show to best exemplify the 56 exhibited artists’ strengths and aesthetics, remaining cohesively linked by Robin’s extensive knowledge of her artists and of photography. “This is my favorite exhibit, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Robin. “It is my curatorial showcase.” From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery rooms are a mosaic of nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle.
This year’s invitational image, “Beach Samba” by Patricia Heal, is a portrait of a woman in a large, orange-red sunhat, whose downward gaze obscures her face entirely. Blurring the line between photography and painting, the color palette and uniquely large grain pattern of the photograph is reminiscent of Georges Seurat’s pointillism...

ABOUT:
In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way.
This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat reclining in the pool with a drink. The black and white image evokes an extreme sense of nostalgia in its cinematic portraiture and supple texture. Though the figure of the woman is tauntingly beautiful, the drink is the darkest tone, nearing black, and is centered in the frame. With this, we are reminded of the refreshing notes of summer and the utter serenity of taking the day off to relax.
The show’s imagery is evocative of all eras of summer, thus any viewer can relate or connect to one of the images. As Rice likes to say, “There’s something for everyone.” One image by Benjamin Heller details a strong owl flying past the camera, with a blurry, forested background. This photograph hints at the adventurous, nature-filled summer; one filled with hiking and treasure hunts. Another image by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj details a thin black woman in a round, textured skirt, grasping onto a white orb-like shape covering her head. This image evokes the sense of wanderlust that summer so often indulges and plays well into the selection of more obvious summer scenes that Rice has incorporated as well.

"Line of Separation", Finland, 2014
By Haik Kocharian
Located in Hudson, NY
These photographs are printed as Dye Sublimation Prints. Framing options available.
"Surfing Color" presents photographs that are abstract creations born from realism. Kocharian emphasizes the ambient color in the tradition of minimalism, observing the beauty and mystery of light, shadows, tone, and moods. The environments within the photographs are transformed into ones of symbolism, challenging the viewer to question the images. As a result, a tension is created, like an energy trapped in a frame attempting to escape.
Kocharian, who is also a filmmaker, brings a cinematic eye to his photography, as we experience images that reflect simplicity through his focus on light, color, and the documentation of ordinary life.
In “Going Home,” Los Angeles a pool-like shadow on the foreground alters the nature and surrounding of the image as light breaches from the center of the bike during sunset. “Blue Highway”, Nevada leads the viewer into the deep blue of early dawn and draws them into a new beginning.
His influences in these photographs include artists such as Mark Rothko and photographer William Eggleston, as Kocharian uses color, texture, geometry, and shapes to tell a story that evokes contemplation and introspection.
Born in Armenia, Haik Kocharian was introduced to the world of art in his early childhood by his parents, who were theater and film actors. He began his studies at the Armenian Theater Academy and continued his education in film at Brooklyn College, where he also studied photography. Kocharian resides in New York City.
In 2015, Kocharian released his first feature film, "Please be Normal," starring Oscar-nominated actor Sam Waterston. The film was nominated for a Critic’s Pick in the New York Times and won awards at two film festivals.
Kocharian is actively involved in charity work and, as a photographer, he has collaborated with many non-profit organizations in the U.S. and abroad such as Village Health Partnership in Ethiopia and Meaningful World, a UN-affiliated NGO in Burundi, Kenya, and Rwanda.
He has exhibited his works within galleries in New York such as Galerie Mourlot, Robin Rice Gallery, 92 Y Tribeca, and James Cohan Gallery...
