Trompe l’oeil of silver medal of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, mayor of Amsterdam
Located in UTRECHT, UT
Framed trompe l’oeil of silver medal celebrating Dr. Nicolaes Tulp’s fourth term as mayor of Amsterdam Pen and black ink with grey and yellow-brown wash, over black chalk, within black ink framing lines. Signed at the lower right of the fictive sheet of paper: Antonina houbraken. Inscribed, below medallion: Dr Nicolaas Tulp. Ao1672. / oudste Raad.Burgermeester van Amsterdam By Antonina Houbraken Paper watermarked with a fleur de lis 208 x 297 mm Bears stamp, verso, indicating the drawing was at one point a gift from Dr. B.W.Th. Nuyens (1866-1945), a medical doctor in Amsterdam, known, among many other things, for his efforts to fight tuberculosis and his promotion of post-natal care. Antonina Houbraken (1686 Dordrecht – 1736 Amsterdam) was a draughtswoman who is known for her many topographical drawings of Dutch sites. She also drew landscapes and is recorded as a skilled portraitist. Houbraken was the daughter of painter and writer Arnold Houbraken and sister of the printmaker Jacob Houbraken. It is assumed she learned to draw in her father’s workshop. In 1723 she married Jacobus Stellingwerff, a draughtsman who also made topographical drawings for the albums of Andries Schoemaker, a numismatist and medal specialist and collector of topographical prints and drawings. Schoemaker was also a contributor to the famous standard work on Dutch medals...

The Last Roman Catholic Monarch to Rule over England, Scotland and Ireland, 1789
Located in Langweer, NL
An original engraved portrait of James II, King of England. The style of the engraving and the attire of the individual are consistent with late 17th-century fashion, aligning with James II's reign from 1685 to 1688. The text beneath the image indicates that it was published as part of the same historical work by Rapin de Thoyras, and this specific print was made from an original picture painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller, a leading portrait painter of that time. The engraving was published as the act directs on August 1st, 1789, showing that it was also intended to be protected under copyright law. This inscription indicates that the portrait of James II, King of England, was originally painted by Godfrey Kneller (referred to as G. Kneller Pinx, with "Pinx" being an abbreviation for "pinxit," Latin for "painted by") and engraved by John Goldar (referred to as Goldar Sculp, with "Sculp" being short for "sculpsit," Latin for "engraved by"). James II of England, who was also James VII of Scotland, was born on October 14, 1633, and reigned from 1685 until he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution...

Floral Masterpieces: A Collection of 19th-Century Horticultural Art, 1896
Located in Langweer, NL
"Floral Masterpieces: A Collection of 19th-Century Horticultural Art" Introducing "Floral Masterpieces," a curated collection of six original antique prints from "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse," authored by the renowned Edward Step and published in 1896. This collection represents a pinnacle of horticultural illustration, capturing the nuanced beauty of popular 19th-century floral species with exceptional chromolithographic artistry. 1. Hybrid Abutilon (Abutilon venoso x striatum): This print highlights the rich, velvety reds of the Hybrid Abutilon, complemented by intricate foliage detail. 2. Shoe Flower (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis): Renowned for its flamboyant blooms, this illustration depicts the Shoe Flower with its striking crimson petals and contrasting yellow stamen. 3. Hibiscus Roseus: The subtle pink shades of Hibiscus Roseus are rendered with a soft, delicate touch, inviting the viewer to appreciate its understated elegance. Each print in this series exemplifies the meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant coloration that chromolithography afforded artists of the era. These illustrations not only served as a visual delight for Victorian society but also contributed significantly to the scientific study and classification of plants. Presented with a white border that accentuates their detail, these prints are a testament to the enduring legacy of Victorian botanical exploration. They offer collectors and enthusiasts an opportunity to own a piece of botanical and illustrative history, perfectly suited for display in any setting that values both aesthetic and historical significance. Engraved View of Bridgnorth, a Town in Shropshire, England, 1807
Located in Langweer, NL
This engraving is part of a collection showcasing the beauty of England and Wales, a series that was common in the 18th and 19th centuries to celebrate and document the picturesque landscapes and significant towns of Britain. The text provided in the last image offers several details: 1. The title of the engraving is "BRIDGENORTH. Shropshire." 2. It was engraved by J. Greig from a drawing by the late E. Dayes. 3. The engraving was published in London by Vernor, Hood & Sharpe Poultry, February 1st, 1807. 4. It was created for "The Beauties of England and Wales." The artwork depicts Bridgnorth, a town in Shropshire, England. The engraving would have been intended to capture the charm and appeal of Bridgnorth, with its notable bridge and surrounding architecture. Engravings like this one were often collected by those who appreciated the artistry of such views and by those who were interested in the topographical and historical significance of the location. E. Dayes (the late Edward Dayes) was a well-known artist of the period, and J. Greig was the engraver who transferred Dayes' artwork into the medium of engraving. The publication date of February 1st, 1807, places this work in the early 19th century, a time when such engravings were a popular form of mass media, providing a visual understanding of places that many people might not have the opportunity to visit themselves. The engraving serves as both an artistic and historical record, capturing Bridgnorth in the early 19th century with a level of detail and craftsmanship that is characteristic of the period's topographical art...

Map of Vusihyen, Hu Chew Fu and Hou-Tcheou-Fou, Historical Chinese Cities, 1754
Located in Langweer, NL
Given these specific names—Vusihyen, Hu Chew Fu, and Hou-Tcheou-Fou—it appears that the map depicts historical Chinese locations. These names are likely transliterations of Chinese names from the period. "Hu Chew Fu" might be an old Western spelling for what is known in modern pinyin as Huzhou, a city near Lake Tai in China. "Hou-Tcheou-Fou" could refer to a historical name for another city or region, also located in China. More research needed. More about the maker: Jacques-Nicolas Bellin's contributions to cartography and hydrography set a precedent in mapmaking during the 18th century. His role as Hydrographer to the French Navy and later as the Official Hydrographer to the French King placed him at the forefront of maritime charting...

Regal Golden Thrush Perched, 18th Century Seligmann's Rare Bird Series, 1749
Located in Langweer, NL
This original antique hand-colored engraving by Johann Michael Seligmann is a representation of the Golden Thrush, derived from George Edwards' "Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History." The artwork was part of Seligmann's own work, "Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Seltener Vogel," which translates to "Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds," published in 1749. The engraving contains several lines of text in different languages, likely identifying the bird and giving references to the work it was derived from. Here’s the transcription and translation of the visible text: - "Gallula Bengalensis." - This is Latin, likely the scientific name of the bird at the time, which translates to "Bengal Gallula" or "Bengal Thrush." - "N:o 80./VII.Heft." - This seems to be a reference to the plate number and the volume or issue number of the collection. - "Le Grive Dorée, Icterus." - In French, this means "The Golden Thrush, Icterus." 'Icterus' refers to the genus that includes birds commonly known as orioles, which are often characterized by their yellow and black plumage. - "Goldbrostel." - This could be an old or regional name for the bird in German, which might translate to something like "Gold Breast" referring to the bird's golden chest...

Echoes of Elegance: The Engraved Legacy of Carlo Antonini, 1780
Located in Langweer, NL
A fine example of an 18th-century botanical engraving. Created by Carlo Antonini between 1777 and 1790, it showcases a detailed depiction of a flower in full bloom. The illustration is highly detailed, with individual petals, stamens, and shading rendered with precision, indicating a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that was characteristic of botanical illustrations of the period. The image is likely part of a larger work, perhaps a botanical compendium or study, which would have been used for both scientific study and artistic appreciation. The text at the bottom of the print, "Rarone Antico nel Foro di Nerva," analysed: The phrase "Rosone Antico nel Foro di Nerva" could potentially be translated as "Ancient Rosette in the Forum of Nerva." Breaking down the phrase: - "Rosone" typically refers to a "rose window," a large circular window with mullions and tracery radiating in a form suggestive of a rose, commonly found in Gothic architecture. However, in this context, without the surrounding content, it might refer to a specific design or feature that is described as "antique" or ancient. - "Antico" means "ancient" or "antique," indicating that the item or feature referred to as "Rosone" is of historical significance or from a past era. - "Foro di Nerva" refers to the Forum of Nerva, which is one of the Imperial Forums in Rome. Therefore, the phrase seems to describe an ancient or historically significant rosette (or possibly a design or feature similar to a rose window) located in the Forum of Nerva. This might be referencing a specific architectural detail or decorative element that was part of the forum's structure or adornment. For a detailed analysis or historical context, you would typically need to consult historical texts, architectural studies, or archaeological reports related to the Forum of Nerva. The style of the print suggests that it was created using engraving techniques that involve incising a design onto a hard surface (like a copper plate), which was then inked and used to produce the image on paper. This method allowed for reproductions of the design and was commonly used for scientific illustrations because it could capture intricate details with great accuracy. Such prints would have been important in the 18th century for the dissemination of botanical knowledge, contributing to the fields of botany, horticulture, and medicine. They also reflect the Enlightenment's value on reason and empirical evidence, where plants were not only appreciated for their beauty but also studied for their structure and utility. Carlo Antonini's notable work includes a series of 85 etchings that were published in Rome in 1780, dedicated to Count Stanislao Potocki. This collection, titled "Serie di LXXXV disegni in varie grandezze composti dal celebre pittore Salvator Rosa publicati ed incisi da Carlo Antonini," consists of reproductions of Salvator Rosa's 'Figurine' series and other prints.
