Mariette Lydis (Vienna 1887 - Buenos Aires 1970) is an Austrian painter and illustrator who was successful in Paris in the 1930s, in Montparnasse and then in Argentina, where she emigrated in 1940. Mariette Lydis was born on 24 August in Vienna, Austria 1887. From 1919 to 1922 she signed her works with the initials MPK for Marietta Pachoffer Karñy, a name derived from her first marriage in 1910 to Julius Koloman Pachoffer-Karñy, who died on 22 April 1922. Subsequently she lived in different cities around Europe, among others: Athens and Florence. She moved to France from 1926 to 1939, during these years she exhibited and became a member of the Salon d'Automne. She befriended Count Giuseppe Govone, the art publisher, in 1928 and married him on 1 August 1934, for whom she illustrated the books of many authors and cultivated a great friendship with Henry de Montherlant, which came about through the publication of a first in 1938 monograph by the author of Les Jeunes Filles. Fearing the German invasion, she travelled to England and then to Buenos Aires in July 1940, where she stayed and published published her latest paintings...

Francis Picabia (1879-1953) was born in Paris to a french mother and a Spanish father who was chancellor at the Cuban embassy in Paris. He had a comfortable childhood, even though he was emotionally troubled. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. At the beginning of his career, from 1908 to 1913, he was strongly influenced first by the Barbizon School and by Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, then by impressionism, cubism and finally abstractionism. Around 1911 he joined the Puteaux Group which he met in the studio of Jacques Villon in the village of Puteaux. He then became friends with the artist Marcel Duchamp. Some members of the group were Apollinaire, Albert Gleizes, Roger de La Fresnaye, Fernand Léger and Jean Metzinger.
From 1913 to 1915 Picabia was often in New York. These years can be identified as the proto-Dada period, which consists mostly of the so-called mechanical portraits (portraits méchaniques): these works ironically proposed mechanistic themes of random tangles of metal parts, paintings and drawings of machines. All these mechanisms on the one hand mocked the cult of the machine, on the other they alluded to sexual intercourse...

Henry Sugimoto was born in Wakayama, Japan, on March 12, 1900. His father left for the United States shortly after he was born, and his mother joined him some years later, with the result that the young Henry was raised largely by his grandparents. Following the end of World War I, Henry Sugimoto arrived in the United States as a "yobiyose" (child brought over) and settled with his parents in Hanford, California. After attending Hanford High School, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley. He soon grew absorbed in art and his parents agreed to let him enroll at the California School of Arts and Crafts. After studying there for four years with a concentration in oil painting, he graduated with honors in 1928. He then moved to the California School for Fine Arts, but after a year there he decided to travel to France, the international artistic capital, for further study. This drawing is closely related to a painting by Curry entitled The Aerialists, 1932, once in the Erskine Collection, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is part of a group of preliminary drawings and three finished paintings executed by Curry around 1932 which were based on The Flying Cadonas. The painting The Flying Cadonas is an icon of American art purchased by the Whitney Museum of Art and now on permanent exhibition.
There are other know studies for these works, nos. 199 through 222 and in John Steuart Curry: Rural America, page 32 (Mongerson Wunderlich, Chicago, 1990.

Delicate and detailed etching by Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964). At the edge of an old Adobe building, a staircase leads to the second floor. The stucco on the walls of the building is cracked, revealing the stonework below. Next to the building is a garden with Corkscrew Willow trees. One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California.

Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964) graduated from Polytechnic High School, L.A. and later studied at U.C.L.A. Art School and at the Cannon Art School. Artists Paul Lauritz and Anna A. Hills of Laguna Beach were her first art teachers. She continued her study of art at the Julian and Colarossi Academies in Europe.
Some of her earliest work was in designing. Many pages of her fine pen work drawings appeared in Los Angeles newspapers, illustrating the fashions of the day, not only in clothes but in furniture and other things. Then for a time she did her work in New York City and later with the Ladies Home Journal in Philadelphia.
One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California.
From the Mexican border to Death Valley she roamed, meeting and painting portraits of such characters as Death Valley Scotty, Shoshone Johnny, the ancient Indian who supposedly saw the first white man come to Death Valley, Emanuel A. Speegle, "The Last of the 49'ers" (over 90 years of age) and others.
Orpha was active in keeping alive the memory of one historical event in particular, the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga ending the Mexican War...
