About the Artist: Hilaire Hiler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Hiler took art classes as a child at the Rhode Island School of Design. When he was older, Hiler studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and William Server’s studio. He also studied at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Denver, Golden State University, and National College in Ontario, Canada. He continued on to France, studying at the University of Paris in 1919. Hiler lived in Paris from 1919-1934, supporting himself as a jazz musician and a piano player for The Jockey Club. "Learnt to ride him gently up to his fences" by Eric Meade-King (1911-1987) signed by initials lower right in image, inscribed to lower margin in pencil graphite and ink on paper laid to thick card, unframed Image 9.75 x 13.0 inches, overall 11.25 x 13.25 inches A really lovely example of Meade-King's work in those happy days of the 1930's in Britain when a large portion of the population in England relished the heady summer days at country shows, competitive riding and all things sporting. The rider is depicted elegantly and Meade-King has achieved perfect lines in her steed at a gallop towards a fence. Marquees stand proudly in the background with flags fluttering in the breeze of a summer's day. This work forms part of a collection of similar drawings we currently hold by Meade-King. Ideal for a sporting themed interior. Eric Meade-King was a prolific artist of all things sporting and surrounding English country life. Studied at Westminster School of Art in London and benefited from tutelage by Lionel Edwards, whose artistic interests lay in the same subjects. Exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and was the subject of of a one-man exhibition at the Greatorex Galleries in 1937 and 1938 in London. The artist captured the mood of the country sporting circles at the time very nicely, exploring both the social element in addition to equine and ornithological studies. Golden Miller wins in 9:20 2/5 1934 Golden Miller (1927–1957) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who is the most successful Cheltenham Gold Cup horse ever, winning the race in five consecutive years between 1932 and 1936. He also is the only horse to win both of the United Kingdom's premier steeplechase races - the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National - in the same year (1934). Golden Miller was trained by Basil Briscoe in Longstowe, Cambridgeshire and owned by Dorothy Paget, who was the British flat racing Champion Owner in 1943, and the leading National Hunt owner in 1933-34, 1940–41 and 1951-52. In 1931, Golden Miller made his steeplechasing debut at Newbury Racecourse where he finished first, only to be disqualified for carrying incorrect weight. On 30 December, he won the Reading Chase before winning the Sefton Steeplechase on 20 January 1932. In 1933, as a six-year-old and winner of two Cheltenham Gold Cups, he started as the 9/1 favourite in the Grand National but fell at the Canal Turn. In the 1934 Grand National win, he set a new course record of 9 min 20.4s for Aintree. This victory was the middle of five consecutive Gold Cup victories, a Gold Cup record.[2] He retired in 1939 with a record of 29 wins from 52 races. He is buried at Elsenham Stud, a working farm in Elsenham, West Essex. Artist Bio: Paul Desmond Brown (1893-1958) was born in Minnesota and soon moved to New York City with his family. A quote from his biography:"Paul Brown told his host on a radio interview held in September of 1956, 'One day in 1904, I got 50 cents someplace and went over to the National Horse Show at the old Madison Square Garden and saw 'fine leppers,' [a term used for jumpers] as we called them, and Thoroughbreds for the first time.' From then on he appeared to be hooked on drawing horses." At the age of 17, his family relocated again to Garden City on Long Island, where Brown had the opportunity to explore polo grounds...
