Vintage political cartoon by H.M. Talburt (American, 1895-1966). A man in a suit is speaking about the president into his "hat," which is the mouthpiece for a rotary phone. The character is labeled as a "whispering campaign." The piece is titled "The Great Mouthpiece." Signed "Talburt" in the lower right corner. Dated in the illustration ("1936") Presented in a new white mat with foamcore backing. Paper size: 14.75"H x 12.75"W Mat size: 18"H x 16"W Harold Mortin Talburt (American, 1895-1966) was a cartoonist and illustrator who received the 1933 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. Talburt started his career as a reporter with the Toledo News-Bee in 1916 and became an editorial cartoonist with the Scripps–Howard News Services in 1922. His 1932 cartoon "The Light of Asia", printed in The Washington Daily News, received the 1933 Pulitzer Prize, and his other awards included a 1956 Christopher Awardvand an award from the Freedoms Foundation. He was chief editorial cartoonist of Scripps–Howard years until his retirement in 1963. He was a member of the Gridiron Club of Washington, D.C. and served as its president in 1943.
