Untitled
Located in Austin, TX
Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...

The Big Red One
Located in Phoenix, AZ
video copyright by the artist and Bentley Gallery, Inc. One of his last available paintings created in Hawaii and inspired by his visit to the lava fields. b. Long Beach, CA (April 9, 1926 – January 17, 2018) Ed Moses was a prominent figure in the Los Angeles art scene and key promoter of Post-War, West Coast art for almost 60 years. Best known for his eclectic range, his canvases are formal abstractions that use a variety of processes to experiment with surface—creating striations, cracks, marks and blurs at times juxtaposed with hard-edge geometric abstraction. As he described, “Painting is like discovery, trying this, trying that, bending this, twirling that, and then, every once in a while, it goes bing!” Moses' works are held in the permanent collections of the Albright-Knox Gallery, NY; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Berkeley Art Museum at UC Berkeley; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Dallas Museum of Art, Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hammer Museum; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Cincinnati Museum of Art; Butler Art Institute of American Art, Ohio; Dallas Museum of Art; National Gallery of Art; Musee National d'art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, FR; and many others. As a young man, Moses joined the military during World War II as a Navy Medical Corps surgical technician and discovered an aptitude for treating injuries. After his tour ended, he enrolled in Long Beach City College's pre-med program with the intent of becoming a doctor. After a painting course with Pedro Miller, Moses switched his major to art. He then went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he would receive both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While enrolled in his master’s program, fellow artist Craig Kauffman introduced Moses to Walter Hopps, future owner of the influential Ferus Gallery. Though he’d been exhibiting since 1949, Moses first showed at Ferus in 1958—while still enrolled at UCLA—and quickly became part of the “Cool School” with artists Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, John Altoon, and others. Following graduation, Moses moved to New York City where he became friends with Franz Kline, Milton Resnick, William de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, with whom he would exhibit in New York, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. In 1959, Moses married Avilda Peters and moved back to Los Angeles to start a family, travel, and continue his painting career. Always working with process and experimenting with materials as a painter, Moses was critically lauded for his bold composition and innovation. In 1968, he received a Tamarind Lithography Fellowship as well as the offer of a teaching position at the University of California, Los Angeles, his alma mater, where he would teach until 1972. After travels in Europe, he would return to UCLA to teach until 1976, the same year he was recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and his first museum shows: a show of drawings from 1958-1970s at the Wight Gallery at UCLA, and a show of new abstract and cubist red paintings at LACMA curated by Stephanie Barron, the latter marking a transitional moment in his career. While drawing was prominent in his work in the 1960s and early 70s, by the mid-70s, Moses was turning increasingly to painting. In 1980, Moses was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and traveled in Japan. Moses worked with Peter Goulds...

What the Night Delivers Black and Yellow Art Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art
Located in Deddington, GB
What the night delivers" an original abstract contemporary landscape by Gina Parr and other works from the series "Love or Money", explore the deep emotional connection with land and sea scape that the Artist's father gave to her; taking her with him on his day and night fishing trips when she was a child. Working with the memories and emotions of both joy and saudade for time past and life experience gained, her practice reflects her fundamental need to express this bitter- sweet nature of the human condition through abstracted scape and form. In this work Parr is interested in conveying both the joy and the apprehension of her memory of an overnight trip in the darkness to fish with her father. Gina Parr is available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Gina works predominantly in the medium of painting, but also photographs when traveling: her way of painting whilst on the move. Her work is driven by autobiographical themes and natural reference, exploring the human condition through connections to place, time, space and memory. She has exhibited widely in galleries and art fairs in the UK and completed commissions in The Middle East, Belguim and London. Her works are held in collections Worldwide including Keble College Oxford, Director of Jestico + Whiles Architects London, President of the Boston's Children's Museum USA, and Goldman Sachs Senior Economist, London. Originally trained as a Fine Artist, graduating with a First Class BA Honours Degree, she went on to Chelsea College of Art to study Set...

Glimmers of Grace by Judith Williams contemporary black and white ballerina
Located in Atlanta, GA
"The unusual shapes coming together in their raw simplistic form, how they interact with each other, the shapes creating their own language. I let them stand alone in their purest form. The way they come together in the space helps ground them, giving a friction of sorts, a system, a world built around the forms, a quiet place within. I love large inviting spaces, as if to say, “Come here, I’m here to comfort you.” I am creating a space where you find a soothing uncluttered balance. I want you to like the stillness there. So every piece of work has a piece of me in it, my personality, my love of spaciousness and calm. I am totally aware of every aspect of the work and in the moment, concentrating on that one moment in time—the Now. It is my desire that the sense of peace, harmony, and stillness is communicated to you." Judith Williams is a New York born artist now living in Jacksonville, Florida. She is self- taught, and also studied at SUNY Binghamton in upstate New York in their Studio Arts program with James Bohary and David Shapiro. Painting is a vehicle that Judith has used to overcome many personal obstacles. Art soon became a consistent, reliable healer, a means of expression, and has become a necessary extension of herself. She spends time with her family and long sunny days painting in her Florida studio. Her paintings and figurative drawings represent a strong universal appeal. Her abstract paintings and charcoal paintings/drawings have been described as reflective, ethereal and evanescent. Her work shows abstraction plus glimpses of classical styles mixed with hints of abstraction. You can find Judith’s work in select galleries across the United States. “Working abstract is a constant revisited work in process, always expanding on the possibilities of my imagination. I allow the fluid washes of color to move freely, creating an organic feel to the work. I think working with Charcoal is magical. The vine itself is so light it seems as though it is weightless, the dust flies as the sound of its wonderful scratching against the canvas fills the air, and it melts into the canvas so quickly. My abstract and figurative work are intertwined. They follow me and challenge me. I feel my gift...

Printemps, Original Abstract Painting, Jackson Pollock Style Painting Bright Art
Located in Deddington, GB
This colourful contemporary abstract is, as the name might suggest, inspired by leaves unfurling and nature bursting back into life in the wake of spring. Catherine Pennington-Meyer is available at Wychwood Art online and in our gallery. Catherine is an award-winning artist who currently lives and works near Munich, in Germany. Her work concentrates primarily on abstract expressionism. Catherine has participated in exhibitions throughout Europe and has quickly established a prestigious international collector base. Catherine says of her art: `I see my painting as a kind of language, translating what I feel or experience to those viewing it. I am innately drawn to create raw, emotive, expressionist pieces, mostly abstracts, which distil a subject down to its feeling. I don`t only want my art to be `beautiful` but for it to reach out and touch the person who is viewing it on an immediate, intuitive level. I want my paintings to speak to their audience in their own visceral language. I am influenced by nature, particularly the multifaceted nature of water, and memories of growing up in particularly beautiful landscapes in North Yorkshire and Scotland. I also find human psychology and science fascinating. But I see compositions everywhere, whether it be flowers in a park, the way smoke curls, books on a library shelf or a street market. Everything is made up of shapes and colours. The world is a constant source influences and inspiration.’ Over time, as her work has developed, she has been increasingly compelled towards abstraction, through which she feels able to communicate an energy which is untethered by the constraints of realism. She enjoys playing with light, depth and movement in her art to give it immediacy and to draw a viewer into the composition. Catherine also enjoys poetry, and her works occasionally have accompanying narratives. Catherine views visual and written art...

Located in Brooklyn, NY
Born in Lima, Peru, Victor-Raul Garcia was raised by his maternal grandmother with whom he immigrated to the United States at age 6. His art has been described as a subtle romance between expressionism and street art. By intertwining tactile and non-tactile elements through multi-layering techniques, he mirrors the complexities of his personal story, the absurdities of past and present history, and the altered state...
