Pop Art Figurative Prints

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

Tracey Emin: I Lay Here For You (Hand signed and dated fine art monograph)
Located in New York, NY
Tracey Emin: I Lay Here For You (Hand signed and dated book), 2022 Hardback monograph (hand signed and dated by Tracey Emin) on Munken Lynx Smooth Natural White 170 gsm with endpapers of Colorplan Candy Pink 135 gsm; matt laminate printed cover with black head and tail bands Hand signed and dated by Tracey Emin on the title page. 9 × 6 3/4 × 2/5 inches Unframed Hardback monograph with illustrated boards and no dust jacket as issued, hand signed by Tracey Emin. A beautifully designed publication I Lay Here For You, sumptuously illustrated and with a fascinating essay by Katy Hessell, author of The History of Art without Men. About the project: Tracey Emin’s first Scottish show since 2008, I Lay Here For You (28 May – 2 October) will offer an intimate encounter with love and hope set against the domestic architecture and informal woodland of Jupiter Artland. Imbued with connotations of both warmth and vulnerability, resonating with Tracey Emin’s belief of the ‘personal as political’ the exhibition will feature brand new work by the artist reflecting on the possibility of love after hardship. Tracey Emin’s participation in Jupiter Artland’s 2022 season begins with the unveiling I Lay Here For You, a six metre bronze sited personally by the artist in an old-growth beech grove. Larger than life, powerful and at ease, the sculpture presents a radically different view of woman’s place...

Postcard signed, inscribed by Robert Indiana about his portrait at Coenties Slip
Located in New York, NY
Robert Indiana "My portrait was taken on Coenties Slip"...., 1993 Handwritten letter on an offset lithograph postcard Boldly signed in black marker under the letter 4 2/5 × 7 3/5 inches Unframed Unique one-of-a-kind hand written, hand signed note from Robert Indiana, dated 23 VII '93, written on the postcard depicting Robert Indiana's work "Mother and Father", published by the Farnsworth Museum in Maine. The note, done in black marker, is addressed to Don Allan II of Barrington, N.H. and reads" "DON - MY PORTRAIT IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, WAS TAKEN ON COENTIES SLIP IN NYC". Robert Indiana then signs the note.. (Presumably, the reply is in response to a letter or question this fan sent to the artist asking where Indiana's portrait was taken). Makes a great gift for Robert Indiana fans! Coenties Slip is a historic artist's address in the New York art scene - there was even a book written about it! Coenties Slip is a street in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City. It runs southeast for two blocks in Lower Manhattan from Pearl Street to South Street. A walkway runs an additional block north from Pearl Street to Stone Street Here's an excerpt from Art in America reviewing the book: "How does specificity of place play a role in art, enough to become more figure than ground, less a context than a character? This is one of the larger questions framing art historian Prudence Peiffer’s momentous new survey The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever. The book vividly documents a moment in the 1950s and ’60s when a cast of artists settled, at staggered intervals, in a three-block area around Coenties Slip, a street on Manhattan’s lower tip. Coenties Slip borrowed its name from one of the “slips”—inlets for the docking and repairing of boats—that once cut sharply into New York’s downtown waterfront, facilitating the busy circulation of fish, freight, and sailors between land and sea. While New York’s status as a maritime trading hub lured fleets of boats, it was the skeletal remains of that activity, by then sharply diminished, that drew artists to Coenties Slip. In place of industry, they found vast and vacant loft spaces, cheap to rent, in which they could both work and live (illegally, owing to zoning laws)....Peiffer’s book arrives nearly 50 years after the earliest attempt to honor the Slip: the 1974 exhibition “Nine Artists/Coenties Slip,” organized for an old downtown branch of the Whitney Museum on Water Street nearby. The exhibition showcased lesser-known inhabitants of the Slip, including Fred Mitchell (the first to settle there), Ann Wilson...

Señorita Rio Deluxe Hand signed edition of 1 Cent Life Portfolio (85/100) Framed
Located in New York, NY
MEL RAMOS Señorita Rio, from the Deluxe signed edition of 1 Cent Life (Artists & Collaborators), 1963 Color lithograph on wove paper Hand signed and dated on the lower right front; print numbered on the colophon page a copy of which is affixed to the back of the frame (see photo) Edition 85/100 Published by E.W. Kornfeld, Germany, Written by Walasse Ting, Edited by Sam Francis Framed: Elegantly floated and framed in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass Provenance: Acquired from original, complete 1 Cent Life Portfolio, # 85/100 (Artists & Collaborators) from the Estate and Collection of Robert Indiana This original lithograph, splayed across two pages, is from the Deluxe edition of the legendary 1 Cent Life Portfolio, one of the most documented and celebrated artistic collaborations of the 1960s. Chinese American artist and writer Walasse Ting, in collaboration with Sam Francis, assembled a group of the most significant Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists in America, including Pop Artist Mel Ramos, along with the European COBRA artist to create the definitive artistic portfolio, with text by Walasse Ting. The Deluxe edition, which features hand signed prints was published in a limited edition of only 100. This is one of them. Of the 100, editions numbered 60-100, or 40 portfolios, were reserved exclusively for Artists & Collaborators. This hand signed Mel Ramos lithograph is from the portfolio numbered 85 (Artists & Collaborators), which was acquired from the Estate and Collection of Robert Indiana, one of the artists who contribute to the 1 Cent Life portfolio. The racy text to the right of the print -- an anti-Corporate American screed, was written by Walasse Ting. It is elegantly floated and framed in. amuseum frame with UV plexiglass. Signed examples of this portfolio with such superb provenance rarely appear on the marketplace. This is a true collectors item, from the most desirable and influential era in Pop Art history. Mel Ramos became famous for his ironic portraits of pin ups and how they are used in American advertising. (see detailed biography below). The poem called America to the right of the lithograph, entitled "America" was written by Chinese born artist Walasse Ting, and matches the image perfectly, as it's also a commentary on American commercial culture. The poem begins: Brain made by IBM & FBI stomach supported by A & P and Horn & Hardart love supported by Time & Life tongue supported by American Telephone & Telegraph soul made by 7up skin start with Max Factor heart red as U.S. Steel Measurements: Framed 19 inches vertical by 26 inches by 2 inches Lithograph 16 inches vertical by 22.5 inches More about the Signed (Deluxe) Edition of 1 Cent Life portfolio In 1962, the Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting shared his dream project with painter Sam Francis: to create an anthology of his poetry illustrated by leading artists of their time. Over the next two years, Ting and Francis recruited leading Abstract Expressionists and Pop artists—Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg...
