Japanese porcelain okimono 置物 of a sitting child, by Sakaida Kakiemon XII
Located in Amsterdam, NL
Exquisite white glazed porcelain figure (okimono) of a sitting child holding a spray of chrysanthemum flowers with cobalt blue glazed leaves in its hand, by Sakaida Kakiemon XII (1878–1963). The milk white glaze is called nigoshide a type of technique which was not continued at the end of the Edo period, and is the famous rediscovery done by Sakaida Kakiemon XII in 1953. The bottom signed ‘Kakiemon’. Sakaida Kakiemon XII assumed the family title on the death of his father, Sakaida Kakiemon XI, in 1917. Earlier he had graduated from the Arita Apprentice School and then studied ceramics with his father. Initially he worked in the traditional Kakiemon style, echoing the work of his forbears in the 17th and 18th centuries. He began working with his own son in 1924, after the future Kakiemon XIII graduated from the Arita Industrial School. Together in 1953 they succeeded in recreating the classical Kakiemon technique for producing a nigoshide milky-white porcelain body. This technique was designated a national cultural treasure meriting preservation and protection by the Cultural Protection Committee in 1955. That same year he exhibited at the 2nd Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogei-ten) for the first time, winning a prize for his entry. In 1958, he exhibited at the World Exposition...

18/19th Century Unique, Large Burmese Buddha, 8030
Located in Ukiah, CA
Compelling, large Burmese Buddha. It is unique in many ways.  First, it looks like a specific person (as opposed to a sculpture of a generic figure), which is never ever done when sculpting a Buddha statue.  Second, is it figure looks European. the facial features look European, the body shape and the way the body is sitting look European, and the tunic the figure is wearing looks more European than it looks Asian.  It has a rare and beautiful "lotus" cap finial that I've never seen on a Burmese Buddha(or any Buddha) before. A real mystery. Looks to be at least 18/19thC. Everyone has a strong reaction when they see him-they smile.  Sits a full 19 inches tall-extremely large for this type of bronze. Retains an almost untouched chocolate brown patina.  My gut tells me that at some time during the English occupation in the 18th or early 19th century either had this Buddha specially commissioned, or was given this Buddha as a special gift by either a major Temple or spiritual leader, or by a significant political leader of that time and place. in breaking with long spiritual tradition, they had the person's image and Anglo heritage melded with a  Shan style Buddha...

A fine lacquer decorated carved boxwood netsuke of a Noh dancer in a Hannya role, unsigned, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan. The boxwood netsuke finely carved as a kneeling Noh dancer dressed in striking geometric patterned robes. The actor holds an opened war fan behind their back in one hand, a Shinto wand slung over the shoulder in the other. The war fan, tessen, decorated in red lacquer with a golden rising sun at the center. Tessen were sturdy fans used by samurai as protective devices, and sometimes as weapons. Asian Sculptures and Carvings for Your Home Decor

Asian sculptors have worked in materials including wood, bronze and jade. Artists and artisans have used traditional techniques to depict deities, scenes from culture and more, and today, antique Asian sculptures and carvings are a popular choice for provocative and sophisticated home decor.

In China, the Qing dynasty, from the mid-17th century to the early 20th century, brought about significant changes in art while preserving traditional culture. Many emperors during this period were patrons of the arts, such as painting, calligraphy and decorative arts. This era saw the building of new Buddhist temples, which were decorated with statues. Some of these sculptures were adorned with colorful cloisonné decoration, in which tiny compartments, or cloisons, made by soldering copper filaments to a metal surface were filled with vibrantly hued enamel.

From the 17th to mid-19th century in Japan, kimonos were worn across classes and often fastened with a netsuke, a type of small carved toggle. Artists carved these from ivory, wood, shells and coral, creating animals, flowers and mythical creatures. During the Japanese Meiji period, spanning from 1868–1912, the country began trading internationally after centuries of isolation, allowing artists to sell their work overseas. Bronze sculpture flourished around this time for creating teapots, vases and incense burners.

Asian sculpture continued to evolve in the 20th century. During the Japanese Shōwa era, from 1926–89, art was influenced by international modernist movements like abstraction, Futurism and Surrealism. Contemporary Asian sculptures and carvings continue to combine global influences and a rich heritage of technique.

Decorating a space with Asian sculptures and carvings is a great way to add interest to any corner of your home. Explore by material, period or style on 1stDibs.
