Coloured Antique Map of Sicily, Sardinia, Corfu, Elba, Malta and Zerbi (Jerba)
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'Insularum Aliquot Maris Mediterranei Descriptio'. A very attractive example of Ortelius' map combining, on one page, maps of the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Corfu, Elba, Malta and Zerbi (Jerba, off the coast of Tunisia.) The maps detail fortifications on the islands and other major features. (Jerba, for instance, is shown connected to the mainland by a causeway.) The waters are attractively engraved and are sailed by ships. A shipwreck, north of Malta, indicates the point at which St. Paul is thought to have shipwrecked. Volcanoes are indicated in the Sicily map...

Carved Tuscan Wedding Cassone, Renaissance Period
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
This cassone, remarkable for its sobriety, sits on two clawed lion’s feet and a moulded base.
On the façade, there is one large, moulded frame, with two soberly carved medallions inside it. Each medallion has a painted coat of arms at the centre. The two coats of arms are different, suggesting that there was an alliance between two families through marriage.
The thick lid has a fluted frieze at the front.
On the sides, a wrought iron handle reminds us of the use of this piece, which was intended for storing the property of its owner and allowing them to travel between various residences. The square shaped handles highlight the earliness of this object in the century.
The cassone is, along with the bed, a key piece of furniture of the Middle Ages and was still used in the Renaissance Period.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Architectural Terracotta Roof Tile Figure Qilin Foo Dog pr
Located in Forney, TX
A remarkable pair of large Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) earthenware Imperial roof decorations - ornamental architectural terracotta roof tile beasts.
15th/16th century or earlier, Northern China, most likely Forbidden City, Dongcheng District, Beijing, figural pottery modeled as mythical qilin (foo dog / guardian lion), the crouching beast with legs back and flaming body depicted ready to pounce. Retaining partial remnants of the red wax export seal, indicating they are authentic and were legally exported out of the country.
Dimensions: (approx)
Largest: 18" Tall, 19" Wide, 8" Deep
History:
Chinese roof tiles have been a part of Chinese architecture for over 2,000 years. These unique and beautifully crafted tiles have become an integral part of traditional Chinese culture, and have gained international recognition for their beauty and cultural significance. In this article, we will explore the different types of Chinese roof tiles, their construction, cultural significance, preservation and restoration techniques, and modern uses.
Chinese imperial roof decorations or roof charms or roof-figures (Chinese: 檐獸/檐兽; pinyin: yán shòu) or "walking beasts" (Chinese: 走獸/走兽; pinyin: zǒu shòu) or "crouching beasts" (Chinese: 蹲獸/蹲兽; pinyin: Dūn shòu) were statutes placed along the ridge line of official buildings of the Chinese empire. Only official buildings (palaces, government buildings, and some temples) were permitted to use such roof decorations.
Occasionally arranged in an outward marching procession with various different examples, the number and type indicating the importance of the duties performed within the building or within the courtyard protected by a gate. With a maximum number of nine, the mythical beast was one of the highest in rank, thus modeled set to pounce upon the man and lower ranking creatures, ready to devour them should they stray from performing their duties with faithfulness and rectitude
The Design and Construction of Chinese Roofs:
The roof design is an important aspect of Chinese architecture, with each component of the roof playing a specific role. Chinese roof tiles fit into the overall design of the roof and are placed on top of wooden supports called purlins. The interlocking system of Chinese roof tiles ensures that they stay in place and prevent leaks. Ridge tiles...

Polychrome carved wooden sculpture of Saint Sebastian, late 16th century. JUAN D
Located in Madrid, ES
"Polychrome carved wooden sculpture of Saint Sebastian, late 16th century. JUAN DE JUNI"
Attributed to: Circle of Juan de Juni (Valladolid School)
Date: Circa 1580-1600
Material: Carved wood and gilded polychrome (estofado)
Dimensions: 73 x 33 x 21 cm
Origin: Spain
Description:
A powerful late Renaissance depiction of Saint Sebastian, masterfully carved in wood and richly polychromed and gilded (estofado technique). This Spanish sculpture, probably from the late 16th century, displays expressive anatomy, emotional tension, and dramatic movement—stylistic traits strongly associated with the school of Juan de Juni, a leading figure in Castilian sculpture of the period.
Sebastian is depicted half-naked, tied to a tree trunk, with traces of blood and arrows, symbols of his martyrdom. The sculpture demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, particularly in the modeling of the torso, the twisted posture, and the naturalistic treatment of the face and hair.
The piece retains much of its original polychromy and gilding, with some expected age-related losses. It has undergone preventive conservation treatment to ensure its structural stability while preserving its historical authenticity.
Condition:
Generally good condition considering its age. Some loss of polychromy and gilding is visible, particularly on the torso and base, but the sculpture retains a remarkable degree of originality. A professional restoration was carried out to strengthen and preserve the structure.
Provenance: Private collection, Spain.
Juan de Juni (circa 1507-1577) was a renowned sculptor and architect of French origin, probably born in Joigny, Burgundy, France. Although born in France, he spent most of his career in Spain, where he became one of the major figures of 16th-century Spanish religious sculpture...
