PERINO DEL VAGA 'After', Important Flemish Grotesque Tapestry, Circa 1550

About the Item

Important - 16th century - grand scale - museum quality - Renaissance period - antique Flemish finely woven grotesque tapestry panel in wool and silk - after designs by PERINO DEL VAGA (Pietro Buonaccorsi 1501–1547) - likely woven from/after the same cartoon as the Diana of Ephesus tapestry for the Palazzo Doria from the series of grotesque tapestries (with later re-woven areas - also in a different color combination) - featuring winged females - campana urns with foliage - plinth with opposing sphinx - scrolls - tassels and columns - unsigned - probably Brussels - circa 1550. Fair restored antique condition - areas of re-weaving in the 19th century - extensive fading with stains from age and use - replaced/reduced border - linen lining/backing. Tapestry size - 80" Wide x 101 1/2" Long. Special Note - There is a PERINO DEL VAGA tapestry titled 'Diana of Ephesus' with identical details and iconography in the National Museum - Stockholm (Sweden) - inventory number NMK 82/1961.

    Pierre Adrien Chabal-DUSSURGEY (1819-1902) Designer - BEAUVAIS TAPESTRY MANUFACTORY Maker - Important Antique Louis XVI style floral tapestry settee back fragment - the floral tapestry finely woven in wool and silk threads with garlands and swags and tassels - all centered by a powder blue ground cartouche with white roses within an oval frame - suitable for framing - France - circa 1855. Excellent antique condition - minor fading and loss - areas of wear/thinning - no apparent restoration - minor stains and soiling with signs of age and use. Size/dimensions - 35" (91.5 cm.) wide x 24" (61 cm.) high.
