About the Item

“Drummond” Mid-Century Modern Armchairs by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil, 1959 (Set of 2) Designed in 1959 by the acclaimed Brazilian architect and designer Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014), the "Drummond" armchair stands as a timeless icon of Brazilian modernism. Crafted in solid jacaranda wood with a beautifully sculpted form, the piece highlights Rodrigues’ mastery of combining noble materials with elegant, organic lines. One of the most striking features is the pair of sculptural and robust armrests, carved in jacaranda with refined curves that give the chair both strength and sophistication — a true signature of Rodrigues’ design language. The seat and backrest are upholstered in an aged cherry-colored fabric, still preserved and not replaced. The upholstery shows gentle signs of time, adding to the character and authenticity of the piece. This set was acquired between 1963 and 1964 at the OCA store in Rio de Janeiro, a gallery founded by Sergio Rodrigues himself, and remained in the same family until 2024, ensuring well-documented provenance and historical value. Named in tribute to Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of the most influential Brazilian poets of the 20th century and a contemporary of Rodrigues, the chair bridges two pillars of Brazilian culture: design and poetry. Highly comfortable and visually impactful, this armchair is an excellent choice for sophisticated living rooms or design collections that value elegance, history, and authenticity. Literature: "Móvel Moderno Brasileiro", by Maria Cecilia Loschiavo, ed. Olhares, p. 300 "Sérgio Rodrigues", by Soraia Cals, ed. Icatu, p. 33 Sculptural jacaranda armchairs by Sergio Rodrigues, designed in 1959. Featuring robust armrests and aged cherry fabric. Acquired at OCA Rio, kept in the same family until 2024. Rare and collectible Brazilian modernist design.

Vintage Rosewood Armchair by Celina Decorações, Brazilian Midcentury, 1960s
By Celina Decoracoes
Located in New York, NY
This armchair is made of solid Brazilian Rosewood, with new upholstery in gorgeous suede leather. The armrests have a rectangular design with a back of vertical slats. This model features a delicate and still well-constructed use of this precious wood, which became very scarce with the passage of the years. This piece received new upholstery in soft nubuck leather, but its structure in solid Rosewood remais in original condition. Based in Rio de Janeiro, the Celina Decorações factory imposed high-quality standards, maintaining handcrafted characteristics. The company was created in 1951 when Munis Zilberberg takes over the family business - a small upholstery workshop that worked on refurbishing sofa beds and antique furniture. The name is a tribute to her mother, Celina Zilberberg...
