About the Item

This modernist office chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner for the Danish manufacturer GETAMA Gedsted during the 1960s. The raw, geometric frame of the chair is made of light oak wood. The seat and backrest are upholstered in blue fabric. The wide seat and armrests make the chair very comfortable and ideal for use while working or studying. Hans J. Wegner is a world-famous Danish designer known primarily for his numerous chair designs. Wegner had a special ability to combine functionality and aesthetics. Many of his projects have amusing or poetic qualities. Wegner is known as one of the pioneers of Danish modernism and one of the key figures in the golden age of Nordic design. He has received numerous design awards in his career, including the Lunning Prize and the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennial in 1951, the Prince Eugen Medal in 1961, and the C. F. Hansen Medal in 1980. GETAMA is the epitome of something truly Danish. Excellent craftsmanship, quality and the highest level of service have made the factory known and respected throughout Denmark. This was mainly due to the collaboration with Hans Wegner who helped Gedsted Tang-og Madrasfabrik make an international breakthrough as a furniture company. As a result of this breakthrough, the company had to come up with a shorter and more international name, so in 1953 Gedsted Tang-og Madrasfabrik became GETAMA. GETAMA's ambition, after over a hundred years, is still to create innovative furniture designed by the best architects. The chair is in original vintage condition. It has traces of age, wear, scratches on the wood and discoloration on the fabric. The seat is at a height of 44 cm.

MCM Grand Haven Chair by Jack Van der Molen for Jamestown Lounge in Blue Fabric
By Jack Van der Molen, Jamestown Lounge Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous Mid-Century Modern Grand Haven dining or accent chair designed by Jack Van Der Molen for Jamestown Lounge Company. Beautiful vintage condition. We had the foam replaced in the original cushion, but it still wears its original blue hopsack fabric. We have deep cleaned the fabric but there are still hints of staining. Hard to find but it is there. I would not be afraid to use it however. The original webbing has been replaced and the wood has been restored to its original glory. However, you may still find small imperfections as it is a vintage piece. Please see photos, circa 1950s-1960s Roses are red, violets are blue, and so is this awesome Grand Haven chair we have to offer you!!! We have a vintage ad that denotes these as “the famous Grand Haven chair, winner of the coveted House Beautiful Classic Award given for exceptional value in design, construction and comfort.” That couldn’t be more accurate! Besides the obvious beauty, this chair is super comfortable and ready to grace your mid-century modern home with its bold presence. It wears its original blue “hopsack” fabric, and we had the foam replaced in the original cushion, so it is closer to its original condition. This would be a wonderful accent chair to have in your entry way for sitting as you remove your shoes or a king chair at your dining table. Wherever you choose to put it, this chair is sure to be your new conversation piece. Jack Van der Molen is an award-winning gifted American designer of the mid-20th century. He was born in 1922 and is a man of many accomplishment and talents. He was awarded five Battle Stars for his actions during WWII, is a fabulous golfer winning many tournaments, and an excellent watercolorist with work in private and commercial collections. He was educated at Kendall School Design in Grand Rapids. His furniture design work successfully combines organic details with clean lines. He designed several lines of furniture for Jamestown Lounge Co. including “Americana Casual”. He even won the coveted House Beautiful Magazine “Best Chair of the Year” award for his “Grand Haven” chair for Jamestown in 1959. In addition, he collaborated with Dupont initiating use of polyester fiber in upholstered furniture. His 61 years designing for top manufacturers is celebrated by how desirable and sought after his designs are today. Jamestown Lounge Company of Jamestown, New York was founded in 1888 by four partners. They first manufactured, obviously from their name, only lounges. These were long armless, backless, upholstered pieces with a hard roll at one end…what my mother always called a “fainting couch”. They soon added other box couches and convertible sofa beds leading into full manufacturing of all kinds of case and upholstered goods. They are famous for their Feudal Oak...
