ABOUT Vintage Brno tubular steel armchairs, Model 245A. Originally designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, the Brno Chair reflects the groundbreaking simplicity of its original environment. The design is celebrated for its lean profile, clean lines and meticulous attention to detail. One of the first cantilevered chair designs to be produced. CREATOR Designed by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll. Made in Italy. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1986. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Nickel, Leather. CONDITION Good. Minor wear consistent with use and wear. Some scuffs and creasing to the leather. No tears in the leather. Minor scuffs on the nickel frames. No pitting on the nickel. Spot of paint on the back of one chair denoted in photos. DIMENSIONS H 31.5 in. W 22.75 in. D 22.5 in. Seat Height 18 in. HISTORY A hugely influential figure in design history, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe brought a less-is-more approach to everything he designed, from furniture to skyscrapers. He taught at the Bauhaus and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and was a trusted mentor to Florence Knoll. Mies’ buildings—including the Seagram Building, IIT Campus, and Farnsworth House—changed the face of American architecture.
