About the Item

A set of 6 rare high back lounge version Arne Jacobsen, for Fritz Hansen Oxford chairs in vibrant Ferrari red coloured velvet with revolving chrome bases. (Please note that whilst this is priced as a set of six I would be happy to sell these chairs in sets of 2 if required, please contact me for details). The Oxford chair was originally designed in 1963 for the professors at St. Catherine’s College at the University of Oxford, England, and were delivered in 1964, with the first production models entering the Fritz Hansen catalogue in 1965. Commissioned by the College in the early 1960s Jacobsen was charged with designing an elegant, high-backed chair for the refectory. The chair was dubbed the Professor chair because it was used at the high table in the dining hall reserved for the Fellows of the college. The high-backed design evokes a sense of authority - almost like a modern reinterpretation of traditional high-backed chairs used in formal settings and elevated the Fellows above the other staff and pupils who sat at tables with benches. The design utilised a handmade seat and back made from a single plywood shell shaped to match the curvature of the human back; the height of the chair was intended to reflect the academic prestige of the institution while providing practical comfort for faculty members whilst dining, but also when adapted for meetings and discussions. Jacobsen may not have seemed an obvious fit for such a stuffy English establishment but his reputation as one of Denmark’s leading modernist architects and designers was well established by the early 1960s. It was his proven ability to integrate architecture and furniture design into a cohesive whole which drew him to the attention of St. Catherine’s College, which was looking for a more modern and sophisticated aesthetic. The resulting design was a great success and became a model of refinement and functional elegance, embodying Jacobsen’s belief that furniture should seamlessly integrate with its environment rather than stand apart as mere decoration. The Evolution of the Design The original version of the Oxford Chair had, and still has, an almost monolithic presence. It towered above any other chair of its generation and was upholstered and set on a simple metal base, reinforcing Jacobsen’s preference for clean, unembellished lines. Over time, the chair evolved into multiple versions, including mid-back and low-back variants, broadening its usability beyond the academic setting. Despite its formal origins, the chair’s ergonomic considerations make it suitable for office and conference environments but also fits within a domestic setting too. The gentle curve of the backrest provides support without unnecessary ornamentation, aligning with Jacobsen’s focus on function over form. Today, the Oxford Chair remains a staple in contemporary offices, boardrooms, and homes proving its adaptability beyond its initial setting. Here we have the last, and rarest, iteration of the chair into a high back, lower slung lounge chair. This version was adapted from the original design and was specifically designed for prestigious reception or lounge areas such as 1st class airport lounges and the executive presentation suites of the top echelon automobile manufacturers. As such it was only ever produced in strictly limited numbers, and only made to order rather than being available through the main Fritz Hansen catalogue. These particular chairs date from 2005 and are presented in very good pre-loved condition with just minor marks and some small dents in the velvet upholstery as expected. There are no, holes rips or tears in the upholstery and the chrome frames are in very good condition with no rust. Each chair also benefits from the original Fritz Hansen manufacturer’s label attached to the base under the seat as shown in the accompanying photos. Production and the Role of Fritz Hansen Jacobsen had a long-standing relationship with Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen, whose expertise in production techniques helped bring many of his designs to life. The company was integral to the Danish modern movement, working with other key designers such as Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen. Their collaboration with Jacobsen was particularly significant, as they translated his often ambitious design concepts into commercially viable pieces. The Oxford Chair’s production, as an example, ensured that it maintained the same level of craftsmanship and material quality associated with Jacobsen’s demanding vision. Fritz Hansen has also continued to refine the chair, offering it in various finishes, including fabric and leather upholstery, with both swivel and static bases. This adaptability has kept the chair relevant in the ever changing landscape of interior design. Arne Jacobsen Born in 1902 in Copenhagen, Arne Jacobsen trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His early work was influenced by the functionalist movement, and he gained international recognition with projects such as the Bellavista housing complex in Klampenborg and later the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which featured some of his most iconic furniture designs. Jacobsen’s approach was rooted in the belief that architecture and design should be seamlessly integrated. His furniture designs were never conceived in isolation but rather as part of a broader vision for interior spaces. His ability to balance functionality with aesthetic clarity made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century design. The Oxford Chair remains as a testament to Jacobsen’s ability to create furniture that is both aesthetically compelling and practically minded. It sits comfortably within his wider body of work, bridging the gap between architecture and furniture design with the same rigor and attention to detail. It may not be as sculptural as the Egg or Swan chairs, but it is no less significant. While originally designed for a very specific context, the chair’s endurance in modern interiors is a testament to Jacobsen’s broader design philosophy: simplicity, functionality, and a respect for materials. It is not a piece, like the Egg chair, that demands attention but rather one that quietly asserts its presence - an enduring hallmark of effective design. Please note that whilst this set is priced as a set of six I would be happy to sell these chairs in sets of 2 if required - please contact me for details. 4 Poul Kjaerholm PK9 E. Kold Christensen chairs with seat height extensions
By E. Kold Christensen, Poul Kjærholm
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A set of 4 Danish Mid Century vintage leather and steel PK9 chairs designed by Poul Kjaerholm for E. Kold Christensen with additional bespoke, later designed, optional seat height extensions. These are a beautifully crafted set of chairs with a simple but striking form that have often been cited as Kjaerholm’s finest work; and for good reason… as the story goes Kjaerholm was inspired by a sand imprint of his wife’s behind from a day at the beach. Later, during the design process, Hanne Kjærholm sat in boxes of clay to find the most optimal and comfortable solution; so now you know. These also have the additional benefit of expertly crafted seat height extensions that can be used or not, depending on the height of your preferred table. Note that these are not original extensions as the chairs didn't ever have such additions as they were designed at a lower height to match Kjaerholm’s PK tables...

6 Sigvard Bernadotte H-line chairs in brushed steel, Walnut and leather
By Sigvard Bernadotte, France & Søn
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A rare complete set of 6 Sigvard Bernadotte H-line Danish armchairs in dark burgundy leather with brushed steel frames and solid Walnut arms for France & Son. Designed in the 1960s by the renowned Swedish designer Sigvard Bernedotte the H-line armchairs stand out as one of his rarest designs. Constructed of a steel frame with solid, contoured walnut arms, the chairs also feature a sprung seat and back that adds both comfort and support. And here, finished in a soft dark burgundy leather, they represent probably the finest example of these chairs currently available. Little is known about the design of the chairs other than they were part of a small project that also included a range of modular sofas. The sofas and solo H-line modular system components had open sides rather than arm rests and combined with a coffee table and corner table to create a flexible seating system. It’s believed the system was created in the mid to late 60s at the changeover period in 1967 when Poul Cadovius acquired France & Son and changed the name to Cado. Bernadotte had worked with France & Son on a number of chair designs since 1953 but these were all constructed in wood, which was France and Son’s (formerly France & Daverkosen) great strength. The move to using metal in the H-line coincided with Bernadotte’s own work with metal in other design projects; particularly at Georg Jensen and with Bang & Olufsen, and also with the launch of his own design company in 1964. Bernadotte Design AB helped a number of International and Scandinavian companies explore new materials, technologies, and aesthetic possibilities and it’s believed the H-line was a development in new materials and production techniques for France & Son. This change was later embraced by Cado who created a number of designs using a metal frame by, amongst others, Knudsen & Lind. The quality, as always associated with both France & Son and Cado, shines through on these chairs. From the almost seamless welding of the joints on the square tubing to how all the bolts and screws are recessed to be flush with the frame; everything exhibits an impressive attention to detail. It’s therefore reassuring to note that the renovation of the chairs follows the same ideal. It looks like the frames have been meticulously cleaned, stripped, brushed and polished and the chairs beautifully reupholstered in high quality dark burgundy leather. These details combined with the contoured, waxed and polished solid Walnut arms creates a truly sophisticated and elegant set of chairs that would work well as dining chairs or even as a set of impressive board room chairs...

10 Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastlhom FK 6728 high back leather armchairs
By Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius, Walter Knoll
Located in Highclere, Newbury
An exceptional limited edition set of 10 Danish Mid Century Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastlhom FK high back armchairs, model FK 6728-4G for Walter Knoll, in a cognac coloured leather with a white gloss shell and polished aluminium 4 star base. The price listed is for all 10 chairs as shown. Originally designed by powerhouse 1960s design team Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm in 1964, their ‘Tulip’ chair has become an icon of Mid Century Danish design. The actual original name for this chair that was produced by Kill International is ‘The Bucket Chair’ and it is still produced today by Walter Knoll under that name. Needless to say the name comes nowhere near close to portraying the beautiful and curvaceous lines it exhibits which is why over the years it’s often been referred to as the ‘Tulip’ or ‘Bird’ Chair. The original production name was the FK 6725 which relates to the chair with the fixed base and seat. Other production variants number from 6725-6729 and also have been produced in a 3 leg (3G), 4 leg (4G) or 5 star (5R) base and with or without castors. The original chair was produced with a fixed seat and base, but later versions had a rotating seat - and later still a 4 star and 5 star base with both a tilting and rotating seat. All production models had circular slides or castors fitted to the base of the feet so if you ever see a listing without one or the other they are missing in action. The FK high back armchair version, as shown here, has a leather pad and a gloss white shell and a 4 star rotating base. This was a special edition, as confirmed by email via Walter Knoll, and was therefore only produced in very limited numbers. The fine lines and contours found on the FK chair...

10 Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastlhom FK armchairs with a Matteo Grassi table
By Walter Knoll, Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius
Located in Highclere, Newbury
An exceptional set of 10 Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm limited edition cognac leather FK6728 armchairs matched to a large an impressive Matteo Grassi cream leather and glass dining table. The price shown is for all 10 chairs and the table including the glass top. The fine lines and contours found on the FK chair are still as compelling today as they were when the chair was first introduced. The sculptured arm rests elegantly curve up and away from the chair base and provide both comfort and support. It’s a stylish, easy going chair that works well both in a domestic environment as a dining, side or desk chair, or in a business environment as a meeting room or conference room chair. All the chairs in this set are in good used condition with just minor signs of wear here and there as expected. There really is nothing much to choose between any of the 10 as there are no major marks or damages. The polished 4 star base on all the chairs are also in good condition with just a few scuff marks and scratches on the tops of the profiles, again just as you would expect. The chairs are matched to a beautifully designed and constructed Matteo Grassi cream leather and glass dining table. This large and impressive table has a steel core base that has been upholstered in cream leather and that features a thick glass, floating table top. Matteo Grassi had a long history of producing high quality and finely crafted saddlery going as far back as 1880, and this shines through in the quality of the construction and stitching on all of their products. Like many of their designs the point of identification is that the metal framework is an analogy for the human skeleton with the leather acting as the ‘skin’ that shrouds the frame. The Matteo Grassi family company first came to the notice of interior designers and retailers when the Korium series of chairs were first introduced in 1978. This was the first design they produced under their own name after they moved into mainstream furniture production. This change was based on their increasing involvement in furniture prototyping in the previous 10 years that saw them create and develop bespoke designs for many leading architects and designers. They have ever since been known for producing quality pieces of furniture including the MG5 cantilever chair. This table is the Gazelle model and was produced from the late 1990s through to around 2010 and features their trademark stitching and thick leather; it really is a rare and beautiful table and one that is almost impossible to find on the resale market. It’s constructed of a heavy metal frame with adjustable pads that support a thick glass, racetrack oval shaped top that simply floats above the frame. Whilst it is a very well made and solid piece, it can still be moved by two strong people. This particular table dates from the late 90s and is in excellent condition with only very light marks to the frame and glass – there are no chips in the glass edge. The table has the Matteo Grassi imprint on leather plaques on the underneath of the main frame. As you can see by reference to the photographs, the table can accommodate 10 chairs, but also works well with 8, or 6 chairs too. On this basis you can adapt the seating to your needs and maybe only have all 10 chairs out for larger gatherings and special occasions. Whilst both the chairs and table were designed for the domestic environment the set would work equally as well in an office setting as a funky meeting room or conference table set...

4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. Executive armchairs with an oak frame base
By Knoll, Eero Saarinen
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A classic set of 4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. executive armchairs in the original Knoll blue fabric with an oak frame base. The Eero Saarinen Executive armchair was featured in nearly every Florence Knoll Mid Century interior throughout the 1950s and beyond. Originally introduced in 1950, the chair transformed the notion of what executive seating could be with its fluid, sculptural form and modern finishing. The timeless and versatile design continues to fit seamlessly into work, conference, lounge and dining applications of any décor. The chair remains as one of the most popular Knoll designs ever with new versions of the armchair, as shown here, in fabric with the wooden light oak base retailing at around £2,000 per chair. And it’s the wooden legs that add to their appeal and was ultimately a big improvement on the original tubular steel frame. They are just warmer and more welcoming, as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. As such the chairs are more often used these days as dining chairs rather than in the office. The chairs are also supremely comfortable and are upholstered in a classic Knoll wool fabric that has different subtle colour flecks within the fabric and that also features a slightly darker colour in the seat. This is an intentional design aesthetic as it helps to maintain the condition and look of the seat with heavier use. They date from the 1990s and remain in very good vintage condition with only light signs of use. This item is sold as a set of 4 chairs but the chairs are also available as a complete dining set matched with a Florence Knoll Walnut table...
