France & Søn
Danish manufacturer France & Søn is best known for its prolific output of elegant mid-century modern furnishings in teak and leather, yet its multinational beginnings took shape during the 1930s.
After businessman Charles William Fearnley France (1897–1972) moved from his native England to Denmark in 1936, he began to operate a small mattress factory alongside his friend Eric Daverkosen, a Danish cabinetmaker, under the name France & Daverkosen. Shortly afterward, Daverkosen passed away, and when Denmark was invaded during the Second World War, Charles was captured and sent to a prison camp in Germany. When he was released, the British entrepreneur set out to produce furniture in the early 1950s, setting up a shop in Hillerød to manufacture the kind of sleek beech and teak goods that were gaining widespread acclaim around the world. In 1957, France’s son James joined the business, and the company changed its name to reflect the addition.
Throughout the ’50s and ’60s, France & Søn produced a stunning array — and staggering quantity — of designs, with elegant modernist lounge chairs and armchairs, teak and rosewood dining tables and other furnishings by the likes of Finn Juhl, Grete Valk, Ole Wanscher, Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen all gracing its catalogues.
Even as there was a focus on mass production at France & Søn — and the brand doesn’t quite enjoy the same renown as fellow mid-century Danish furniture makers such as Carl Hansen & Søn — Charles France believed in making quality furniture, and the company’s offerings evoke the warmth of the handcrafted work that is typically associated with Scandinavian modernism.
In the 1960s, the company was bought by Danish designer Poul Cadovius, who folded it into the operations at CADO, a company he founded during the 1950s. Surviving examples of early work from the brand as well as modern icons by the likes of Verner Panton that followed in later years continue to be in demand.

- 10 Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastlhom FK 6728 high back leather armchairsBy Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius, Walter KnollLocated in Highclere, NewburyAn exceptional limited edition set of 10 Danish Mid Century Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastlhom FK high back armchairs, model FK 6728-4G for Walter Knoll, in a cognac coloured leather with a white gloss shell and polished aluminium 4 star base. The price listed is for all 10 chairs as shown. Originally designed by powerhouse 1960s design team Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm in 1964, their ‘Tulip’ chair has become an icon of Mid Century Danish design. The actual original name for this chair that was produced by Kill International is ‘The Bucket Chair’ and it is still produced today by Walter Knoll under that name. Needless to say the name comes nowhere near close to portraying the beautiful and curvaceous lines it exhibits which is why over the years it’s often been referred to as the ‘Tulip’ or ‘Bird’ Chair. The original production name was the FK 6725 which relates to the chair with the fixed base and seat. Other production variants number from 6725-6729 and also have been produced in a 3 leg (3G), 4 leg (4G) or 5 star (5R) base and with or without castors. The original chair was produced with a fixed seat and base, but later versions had a rotating seat - and later still a 4 star and 5 star base with both a tilting and rotating seat. All production models had circular slides or castors fitted to the base of the feet so if you ever see a listing without one or the other they are missing in action. The FK high back armchair version, as shown here, has a leather pad and a gloss white shell and a 4 star rotating base. This was a special edition, as confirmed by email via Walter Knoll, and was therefore only produced in very limited numbers. The fine lines and contours found on the FK chair...Category

- Vintage Italian leather Korium armchairs by Tito Agnoli for Matteo GrassiBy Tito Agnoli, Matteo GrassiLocated in Highclere, NewburyA pair of vintage Italian brown leather Korium armchairs with a steel frame on black castors, designed by Tito Agnoli for Matteo Grassi, 1980s – the price is for both chairs. This pair of chairs date from the 1980s and were part of series of armchairs and sofas designed by Agnoli for Matteo Grassi in 1978. The design bears a close resemblance to the Mario Bellini Cab 413 chair which was released by Cassina in the previous year. Given that both chairs took over a year to prototype it’s difficult to know which took precedence, and although both have a similar look, they feel different: the 413 is softer and more organic and the Korium, firmer and more hard wearing. In a sense both took inspiration from their respective manufacturer’s with regard to the outcome of the designs. Matteo Grassi had a long history of producing high quality and finely crafted saddlery going as far back as 1880, and this shines through in the quality of the construction and stitching. Like the Bellini chair, the point of identification is that the metal framework is an analogy for the human skeleton with the leather acting as the ‘skin’ that shrouds the frame. In a sense the design of the Korium also shares some aspects of the construction of early 20th Century bentwood furniture such as the benches that were created by Jacob and Josef Kohn. Like the wood that was so beautifully embossed in the Kohn’s bench...Category
