4 Poul Kjaerholm PK9 E. Kold Christensen chairs with seat height extensions

About the Item

A set of 4 Danish Mid Century vintage leather and steel PK9 chairs designed by Poul Kjaerholm for E. Kold Christensen with additional bespoke optional seat height extensions. These are a beautifully crafted set of chairs with a simple but striking form that have often been cited as Kjaerholm’s finest work; and for good reason… as the story goes Kjaerholm was inspired by a sand imprint of his wife’s behind from a day at the beach. Later, during the design process, Hanne Kjærholm sat in boxes of clay to find the most optimal and comfortable solution; so now you know. These also have the additional benefit of expertly crafted seat height extensions that can be used or not, depending on the height of your preferred table. Note that the extensions do not affect the chairs at all and can simply replace the original bolts and spacers, which are naturally, also supplied with the chairs. Why? Because you may not be aware that many of Kjaerholm’s early designs in chairs and tables were shorter than you would expect by modern standards. The chairs obviously do match his tables in being around 4 - 7cm shorter in seat and table height, but they do not match many other designs; and the relationship between seat and table height is absolutely fundamental in comfort for when dining. Too high and you feel like a giant at a child’s table; but too short and you feel like a child at an adults table! So you see the importance. Can you imagine paying all that money for a set of chairs like this and not realising the seat height is 3 - 5cm shorter than you were expecting? It’s an odd state of affairs you would think, but Kjaerholm was obsessed with what he called the ‘furniture horizon’ in a room. So much so that he designed all his furniture around the idea of lowering the horizon to create a greater impression of space. That’s also why he used steel in many of his designs as it reflected light, so helped to make the structure of his furniture more transparent. From his classic PK22s to his PK54 dining table, everything is low slung, and laid back; and to be honest a seat height of 41cm on the PK9s is actually not that bad at all – but that’s only of you are of average height or below; basketball players and high jumpers would feel like exiles at Kindergarten… In any event they are stunning chairs and you’ve got the option of height extensions if you ever need them; which you would be hard pushed to find anywhere else, especially as well made as these are. The chairs are also presented in good vintage condition with signs of use exactly as you would expect commensurate with their 60 years of service. Dimensions: H75 X W66 X D60cm Seat Height: 41cm (or 46cm with extensions)

  • 4 Danish Mid Century Arne Hovmand-Olsen, Mogens Kold MK310 teak dining chairs
By Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik, Arne Hovmand-Olsen
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
A beautifully sculptural set of 4 Vintage Danish Mid Century Arne Hovmand-Olsen MK310 teak dining chairs with original black vinyl upholstery for Mogens Kold, 1950s. Originally designed by Olsen in 1951 and manufactured by Mogens Kold, Denmark, these chairs stand out as one of the very first chair designs Olsen created. The chairs feature a sculptural organic back shape that is constructed with a feature insert of plywood and solid teak. Olsen was recognised as being one of the forerunners of using this technique to add strength and durability to his designs as well as creating beautifully sculptured forms that appear as carved from solid wood. This is a design and construction style also adopted by many of his contemporaries including Niels Otto Moller, and many of the designs created by them both are often misattributed as each other’s as they share many similar details and characteristics. These particular chairs were produced with two options of seating style and fabric: one was the famous Danish paper cord seat that was widely used in the 50’s and 60s, and the other, as here, in simple black vinyl. The vinyl used on Mid Century Danish seating is very durable and impressed with a realistic grain that actually makes it very difficult to tell it apart from leather. The other advantage of the vinyl is that as it is intentionally used without a foam insert it accentuates the clean, crisp angular line of the seating base which acts as a counterpoint to the softer more flowing lines of the wooden structure. Plus it’s a lot easier to keep clean and in good condition compared to paper cord! The set is in very good vintage condition with light marks in the wooden frame and on the seats here and there commensurate with age and use – all the joints are solid and sound. Three of the four chairs maintain both the Danish quality control and the MK manufacturer’s metal labels as shown in the pictures, the other is missing in action, maybe eaten by a tiny cockapoo... The chairs are very much in ‘found’ condition and have just had a simple rub down and application of wax to bring them up to a soft sheen. Note that it is a hard seat as there is no foam underlay, but they look good with such sharp lines and are, in any event, very easy chairs to upholster...

  • 4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. Executive armchairs with an oak frame base
    By Knoll, Eero Saarinen
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
A classic set of 4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. executive armchairs in the original Knoll blue fabric with an oak frame base. The Eero Saarinen Executive armchair was featured in nearly every Florence Knoll Mid Century interior throughout the 1950s and beyond. Originally introduced in 1950, the chair transformed the notion of what executive seating could be with its fluid, sculptural form and modern finishing. The timeless and versatile design continues to fit seamlessly into work, conference, lounge and dining applications of any décor. The chair remains as one of the most popular Knoll designs ever with new versions of the armchair, as shown here, in fabric with the wooden light oak base retailing at around £2,000 per chair. And it’s the wooden legs that add to their appeal and was ultimately a big improvement on the original tubular steel frame. They are just warmer and more welcoming, as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. As such the chairs are more often used these days as dining chairs rather than in the office. The chairs are also supremely comfortable and are upholstered in a classic Knoll wool fabric that has different subtle colour flecks within the fabric and that also features a slightly darker colour in the seat. This is an intentional design aesthetic as it helps to maintain the condition and look of the seat with heavier use. They date from the 1990s and remain in very good vintage condition with only light signs of use. This item is sold as a set of 4 chairs but the chairs are also available as a complete dining set matched with a Florence Knoll Walnut table...

  • 4 Vintage Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Knoll, MR50 BRNO tubular chrome dining chairs
By Knoll, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
A set of 4 vintage Mies van der Rohe Knoll, MR50 BRNO tubular chrome and black fabric dining chairs. The price listed is for the 4 chairs as shown. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at his Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, the Brno Chair (model number MR50) reflects the ground breaking simplicity of van der Rohe’s design using a simple cantilever frame. There are two versions of the chair; one in tubular steel and the other in flat steel and the original design dates back to 1930. The metal was originally polished stainless steel but more modern examples from around the 1970s onwards were produced in chromed steel by Knoll International and Knoll Studio who have owned the license to the design since the mid 1960s. There have been numerous copies of the chairs made since their inception but the Knoll original chairs that were produced in the last 30 years have become much easier to recognise. As such, all post 1990 chairs...

  • PK9 Chairs by Poul Kjaerholm, Denmark, 1960s
By E. Kold Christensen, Poul Kjærholm
    Located in Antwerp, BE
The PK9 chair, also known as the Tulip chair, designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen. Its distinctive silhouette, characterized by three impeccably crafted satin-brushed stainless steel springs that serve as columns, provides not only structural support but also a visually striking aesthetic. What makes these chairs even more exceptional is the rarity of the seat in its original leather. This not only adds to their historical value, but also indicates that the materials used are of durable quality. The real inspiration for this chair came from a sand print of Kjærholms wife after a day at the beach, resulting in a design that combines aesthetics and comfort. Each chair tells a story of precise craftsmanship and thoughtful ergonomics, as Hanne Kjærholm herself was involved in the design process by sitting in clay boxes...
