About the Item

A Gilbert Rohde classic nickel plated lounge chair designed for Herman Miller in 1936. Freshly re-upholstered in a thick dark grey boucle and very comfortable. The frame shows it's age in places. Gilbert Rohde was a pioneering American furniture designer whose innovative approach in the 1930s revolutionized modern interior aesthetics. His work combined streamlined forms, organic shapes, and functional elegance, bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modernist ideals. Rohde’s collaborations with Herman Miller beginning in 1933 marked a turning point for the company, propelling it into the forefront of American modern furniture design. Herman Miller, founded in 1905 as a maker of quality furniture, evolved under Rohde’s visionary leadership into a leader in innovative and stylish modern furnishings. Rohde's designs for Herman Miller emphasized simplicity, comfort, and the integration of new materials like chrome and tubular steel, exemplified in pieces like the iconic Chrome Lounge Chair. His work remains highly influential, blending artistry with industrial technique. Together, Rohde and Herman Miller set the stage for mid-century modern design, shaping the aesthetic standards that continue to influence contemporary furniture. Their collaboration produced enduring pieces celebrated for their craftsmanship, timeless elegance, and forward-thinking design, making them highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados today. The lounge chair is in good vintage condition with minor plating issues as pictured (see photos)
