AESTHETIC MOVEMENT

In 1880, polymath designer William Morris declared: “If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” His words encapsulated the Aesthetic Movement, which prized beauty above all and blurred the lines between fine art and the decorative arts, particularly through lavishly crafted furniture pieces.

The Aesthetic Movement, whose major proponents included author Oscar Wilde, flourished from the 1860s to the 1880s and was mostly popular in England and the United States. Design expositions like the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, as well as the publishing of how-to books for interior design, helped disseminate Aesthetic Movement bedroom furniture, serveware, coffee tables and other items, especially to the middle class.

The establishment of new art museums, art clubs and a rising passion for collecting at the time contributed to a growing appreciation for art. Morris’s founding of Morris & Co. in 1862 and the commercializing of this “cult of beauty” by the Liberty store in London, starting in the late 19th century, further disseminated the idea of a domestic space that was thoughtfully and floridly designed.

Leading Aesthetic Movement furniture designers included E.W. Godwin, who drew on Japanese influences and whose work reflected a wider enthusiasm for imported East Asian art. British designer Christopher Dresser created textiles, ceramics and more that were also inspired by Japanese decorative art but were representative of additional diverse design sources that ranged from Egypt to Mexico.

The Aesthetic Movement’s eclecticism resulted in dazzling interiors. Japanese fans were positioned on Renaissance-inspired cabinets with brass hardware, while mantels made of rich walnut or finely carved ebonized wood and adorned with painted Minton tiles mingled with cast-iron chairs against a backdrop of floral wallpaper. In 1881, in New York City, stenciled checkerboard motifs and painted floral murals could be found under an opalescent glass chandelier in a luxurious dressing room designed by German émigré cabinetmaker-decorator George Alfred Schastey. Amid the rise of the industrial age, the style’s promotion of art in everyday life would inform the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau.

1920's Signed Persian Kermanshah Carpet with Traditional Style
Located in Dallas, TX
78759 Signed Antique Persian Kermanshah Rug, 09'08 x 11'02. Signed Persian Kermanshah rugs are Persian carpets bearing the signature or mark of the weaver, serving as an authentication of craftsmanship and providing insight into the rug's origins. Persian Kermanshah rugs are traditional handwoven rugs originating from the Kermanshah province in Iran, known for their intricate designs, fine craftsmanship, and high-quality materials like wool or silk. Featuring elaborate floral motifs, geometric patterns, and vibrant colors such as red, blue, green, and ivory, these rugs are crafted using techniques like the asymmetrical Persian knot to create detailed designs. The signatures, often woven into the rug's border or design, symbolize authenticity and craftsmanship, making signed Persian Kermanshah rugs highly coveted by collectors for their historical significance and artisanal excellence. In this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Kermanshah rug, a harmonious blend of neoclassical elegance and romantic Rococo motifs creates a captivating visual tableau. At its heart lies a cusped medallion, exquisitely adorned with a floral cross motif and anchored by palmette heart pendants at each end. The intricately designed medallion serves as the focal point, radiating timeless charm and sophistication against the neutral beige backdrop. The rug's allover pattern, reminiscent of romantic Rococo aesthetics, features a symphony of blooming palmettes, lotus blossoms, rosettes, acanthus scrolls, and stylized florals and foliage. Each element intertwines gracefully across the surface, weaving a narrative of opulence and refinement. Completing the composition is an ornate floral border, complemented by floral meander guard borders, which enclose the design with lush intricacy, adding depth and dimension to this formal masterpiece. Channeling the luxurious allure of bespoke neoclassical elegance, this signed Persian rug...

Lips - Italian space age modular island sofa, Circa 1960s
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1960s Space Age design, influenced by space exploration and atomic era tensions, brought a futuristic twist to art, cinema, and interior design. Originating amid Cold War anxieties on the American West Coast, it combined humor and avant-garde creativity, often using 'vital forms' inspired by nuclear imagery. This style features modern, cosmic-inspired furniture with vibrant plastics, reflective metals, and curved lines, creating a futuristic ambiance reminiscent of a Stanley Kubrick film. Dominated by spherical and angular shapes, it mirrors the era's fascination with space and atomic science. Enhancing brightness and contrasting with the colorful, reflective furniture. Warm colors and silver accents add to the optimistic, futuristic vibe of this 1960s-inspired design. This sofa is an emblem of the period, refreshed with Vachette leather upholstery in anthracite, a human lips sculptural structure with an hand bar for...
