About the Item

his Warren Platner coffee table—crafted in 1972 for Knoll—stands as an enduring emblem of sculptural American modernism. Platner’s iconic design, first introduced in 1966, gracefully blends structure and ornament: a bronze-toned wire‑rod base that appears as a shimmering fountain of steel supports a round, beveled glass top—offering both elegance and architectural lyricism. The base is a stunning study in repetition and rhythm—the wires, each precisely welded to circular frames, expand outward like a delicate bouquet of metallic reeds. Its mid-century engineering reads as ethereal sculpture, while remaining a functional centerpiece. The glass top is thick, tastefully beveled, and appears original—free of chips or scratches—inviting uninterrupted visual access to the artistry below. Despite its visual lightness, this table anchors a living area with undeniable presence—its bronze patina offering warmth and a tonal counterpoint to the cool clarity of glass. The open base allows surrounding elements—carpet textures, floor surfaces, sculptural objects—to subtly interact with and reflect through the form. Platner’s work for Knoll marked a pivotal moment in 20th-century furniture design, marrying meticulous craftsmanship with poetic form. This coffee table remains a showpiece of that legacy—equal parts engineering precision, modernist expression, and living-art installation. Why this table stands out: Design Icon: Part of Plato’s seminal collection that defined mid-century American modernism. Museum-worthy craftsmanship: The radial steel rod base is both delicate in expression and rigorous in execution. Exquisite condition: The authentic glass top gleams with visual clarity; the patina on the base enhances its vintage character without compromising structural integrity. Timeless versatility: Works beautifully in living rooms, galleries, executive offices, or any interior that appreciates design as both form and function. Ideal for collectors and design-savvy decorators, this Warren Platner coffee table is more than a tabletop—it's architectural expression, functional sculpture, and high-design heritage rolled into one breathtaking piece.
