Large Oil on Canvas "Beggar Boys Playing Dice" After Bartolomé Esteban Murrillo
By Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine and large 19th century oil on canvas after Bartolomé Esteban Murrillo's (Spanish, 1617-1682) "Beggar Boys Playing Dice" (The original work by Murillo was painted in 1675). The impressive artwork depicts two young boys playing dice while another eats a piece of fruit as his dog watches on., within an ornate gildwood and gesso frame bearing a label from the faming company Bigelow & Jordan. The original work by Murillo is currently at the Alte Pinakothek Museum in Munich, Germany. The present work is signed: L. Rüber. Circa: Munich, Late 19th Century. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (born late December 1617, baptized January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively, realist portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. Murillo was born to Gaspar Esteban and María Pérez Murillo. He may have been born in Seville or in Pilas, a smaller Andalusian town. It is clear that he was baptized in Seville in 1618, the youngest son in a family of fourteen. His father was a barber and surgeon. His parents died when Murillo was still very young, and the artist was largely brought up by his aunt and uncle. Murillo began his art studies under Juan del Castillo in Seville. There he became familiar with Flemish painting and the "Treatise on Sacred Images" of Molanus (Ian van der Meulen or Molano). The great commercial importance of Seville at the time ensured that he was subject to influences from other regions. His first works were influenced by Zurbarán, Jusepe de Ribera and Alonzo Cano, and he shared their strongly realist approach. As his painting developed, his more important works evolved towards the polished style that suited the bourgeois and aristocratic tastes of the time, demonstrated especially in his Roman Catholic religious works. In 1642, at the age of 26, he moved to Madrid, where he most likely became familiar with the work of Velázquez, and would have seen the work of Venetian and Flemish masters in the royal collections; the rich colors and softly modeled forms of his subsequent work suggest these influences. In 1645 he returned to Seville and married Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos, with whom he eventually had eleven children. In that year, he painted eleven canvases for the convent of St. Francisco el Grande in Seville. These works depicting the miracles of Franciscan saints vary between the Zurbaránesque tenebrism of the Ecstasy of St Francis and a softly luminous style (as in Death of St Clare...

Susan Tibbles Life Sized Art Assemblage “Master Lock” Framed Sculpture Distresse
By Susan Tibbles
Located in Topeka, KS
Magnificent Susan Tibbles life sized 3-diminsional art assemblage titled “Master Lock” framed sculpture in purposefully distressed display case or shadow box. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, the bottom left corner of frame was broken and a new piece was glued in by our experienced staff. Frame is purposefully distressed. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1989. The definition of a woman? SHE is complicated… SHE is strong… when she isn’t feeling weak. SHE is happy… when she isn’t feeling sad. SHE can do anything placed in front of her… if she can get out of bed. SHE is bold and daring… but sometimes she feels simple. SHE is independent… but sometimes she needs you. She doesn’t want to “blend in” … but she’s judged if she “stands out.” SHE is too old to wear this and too young to wear that. She is too fat; she is too thin… She is your best friend… but SHE is her own worst enemy. She is aged longing for her youth… she is young longing for adulthood. SHE has been labeled as mother, grandmother, wife, girlfriend, partner, daughter, sister… but WHO is SHE to herself?? If SHE is strong willed… she is a b**ch. If SHE is sexy or seductive… she is a tramp. If SHE is reserved… she is a prude. She doesn’t care… but she really cares TOO much! If she could see herself as others do, she would see that SHE is a creation of perfection. Exactly who she is supposed to be. Unique. Individual. Irreplaceable. Definition of a woman? SHE is a masterpiece… but SHE is complicated. We have an incredible life-sized art assemblage created by renowned designer Susan Tibbles for your viewing pleasure! This piece is titled “Master Lock,” and was custom made and hand crafted by Susan Tibbles in 1989. It is composed of a masterfully sculpted and crafted 3-diminsional woman’s silver negligee, thigh high fish net stockings with lock details on the thigh straps, black spiked stiletto heels, and a silver beaded & spiked neck collar with a ring attached to a full-length chain draping from the collar to a hook at the top of the case. The chain hangs down to the base of the case where it gathers between the spiked heels. SASSY!! The sculpture stands in front of a black leather-like back drop inside a monumental black and white display case...

American Studio Craft Wall Mirror by Alan S. Kushner
Located in Hanover, MA
Custom woodwork decorative wall mirror created by artist Alan S. Kushner of Philadelphia circa 1990. Signed "AK" carved on back of bottom triangle. Overall dimensions: 72 inches high by 46 inches wide by 5 inches deep. Framed mirror dimensions: 46 inches high by 24 inches wide by 5 inches deep. Please note that the artist's intention was for the mirror to be displayed with the zebra wood arrow on the bottom pointing downward and the 'fishtail' on top. We know this because on the backside of the mirror are two wedge cut blocks for mounting in a corresponding wall bracket or Z clip. For the purposes of our photography it was not possible to stand the mirror on the point so all our photos show it upside down. Alan Kushner (1949-2008) was a self-taught woodworker and furniture maker who exhibited his designs primarily in and around Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland during the 1980's and 1990's. In 1991 he participated in the summer exhibition "In Our Circle" at the James Michener...

Fernand Maissen Oil on Panel Painting Depicting a Setter Hunting a River Mallard
Located in Atlanta, GA
A French oil on panel painting by Fernand Maissen from the early 20th century, depicting a sporting dog hunting a duck. Created in the early years of the 20th century by French artist Fernand Maissen, this horizontal oil on panel painting depicts a hunting scene. An English setter, coming from the right side of the composition, is hunting a river mallard rising from the waters. The high grass on the right, from which the dog is emerging, is perfectly contrasted by the horizontal strokes used to depict the water on the left. The artist further accentuates the contrast by juxtaposing warm and cold colors. Born in 1873, Maissen was an animal painter who was a student of Jules Lefebvre...
