MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Framed Landscape Photograph by Don Hong Oai
Located in Atlanta, GA
A framed photograph by Chinese American photographer Don Hong-Oai (1929-2004) "The Intimate Shadow", a composed landscape photograph taken in Quilin, the world-famous scenic area in China. Signed with title, inscription of location and dated on the top -left, red sealed on the lower right corner and signed and dated 1982 lower left on the mat. The photograph depicts an idyllic scenery on Li-river with the karst peak in the misty background, where a fishing boat floats. The work was created with dark room manipulation to echo the traditional chines ink painting that showcase a surreal ambience. The photograph is housed in the original artist's archive metal frame with an old print of the artist's bio and copyright mark on the back. It was purchased directly from the artist's studio. Sight Approximately 13.625" w x 10.125" h. Don Hong-Oai was born in Canton, China but raised and educated in Saigon, Vietnam. At age 13 he began an apprenticeship at a Chinese photo and portrait shop. In 1979 he immigrated to the United States and settled in the Chinatown of San Francisco. Don began making a living by selling his landscape photographs in front of Macy’s and began to receive recognition for his craftsmanship. His style was heavily influenced by the legendary photographer Long Chin-San and his technique of layering negatives for ideal composition, by taking three negatives, foreground, middle ground, and far ground, and selecting a subject from each negative. The photographs of Don Hong-Oai are made in a unique style, which can be considered Asian pictorialism. This method of adapting a Western art for Eastern purposes probably originated in the 1940s in Hong Kong. One of its best-known practitioners was the great master Long Chin-San (who died in the 1990s at the age of 104) with whom Don Hong-Oai studied. With the delicate beauty and traditional motifs of Chinese painting (birds, boats, mountains, etc.) in mind, photographers of this school used more than one negative to create a beautiful picture, often using visual allegories. Realism was not a goal. Don Hong-Oai was one of the last photographers to work in this manner. He is also arguably the best. He has won hundreds...

Michael Roberts Original Photograph "Michel Greek Toga" Hamilton's London, 1989
Located in Palm Springs, CA
PLEASE NOTE: This original photo from the amazing Michael Roberts exhibition at Hamilton's Gallery in London, England of "Michel in a Toga" was used in promotional pieces for the exhibit. It is signed/ nuymbered 1/25, but this is the actual photograph from the exhibit, and no other image was made/printed. IT IS AN AMAZING IMAGE. * This image of Michel wearing a sheer greek key toga. He is nude underneath and although subtle, it is a nude. Michel was a high fashion male model thet Michael Roberts adored and used him for many fashion campains for Joeph's London. A rare large black and white hand printed silver gelatin photograph of Michel by the legendary fashion icon, Michael Roberts, London. This image was part of a Michael Roberts show in 1989 at Hamilton's gallery, London. Signed on back. Black metal simple frame. Image: 15" x 19", framed: 22' x 26". This image was in the gallery show in London. The images from the show are very rare and now highly sought after and collected after Mr. Robert's death. two images were purchased from that Exhibit. The second one, "Nude of Michel" is available on separate listing. We hope they are purchased together as they were hung next to each other in the exhibit. MICHAEL ROBERTS: The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool. Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist. Then from 1979 he was art and style director of Tatler magazine, when the editor, Tina Brown...

Photograph Self-Portrait by Sam Taylor-Wood
Located in Atlanta, GA
A framed C-print photography by British artist Sam Taylor-Wood (1967-). Entitled "Self-Portrait in a Single-Breasted Suit with Hare", the print was made in 2001 and its unique in this size at 9" h x 6" w. Presented in a wood frame. Provenance: Matthew Marks Gallery, NYC (label verso). Artist Biography (courtesy of Guggenheim Musuem Collection) Sam Taylor-Wood B. 1967, LONDON Sam Taylor-Wood was born in London in 1967. At the age of sixteen, she enrolled in an art school in Hastings, later moving back to London to attend Goldsmiths College. After graduating in 1990, she worked as a bartender and as a dresser at the Royal Opera House; the latter experience would influence her work’s unabashed theatricality. Originally a sculptor, she began working in photography, film, and video in the early 1990s. Her first film, 16mm (1993), consists of an isolated female figure gyrating to a steady beat. She explored similar intersections between video, dance, theater, music, film, and video in subsequent works, including Killing Time (1994), in which seemingly bored actors wait their turn to lip-synch the lines of different characters from Richard Strauss’s Electra. Her photographic work also finds points of intersection with other mediums. The title of Five Revolutionary Seconds (1995–98), for example, refers to her creation of a panoramic image by rotating her camera around a room over that period of time; the resulting image has a narrative quality despite being a static image. In recent years, Taylor-Wood has engaged ideas of celebrity culture in her work. Third Party (1999–2000), a seven-screen video installation at the Hayward Gallery in London, featured pop singer Marianne Faithful and actor Ray Winstone in different one- and two-person scenes of flirtation and ennui, creating a party-like environment in the gallery where the viewer is privy to these personal exchanges. Equal parts pathos and humor, the two-minute film Pietà (2001), in which the artist attempts to suspend the Hollywood actor and hard-living icon Robert Downey, Jr. in her arms, also evokes the well-known art historical subject. Her video David (2004) evokes similar connotations and intimately unveils the much-photographed dynamic soccer icon David Beckham in deep sleep. Time and speed are often centerpieces of her videos, whether the rapid acceleration of a bowl of fruit’s decay process in Still Life (2001) or the illusion of frozen time in The Last Century (2006), for which the actors are in fact filmed in real time but remain impossibly still. Taylor-Wood’s first narrative film, Love You More (2008), borrows its title from a song by the 70s punk band Buzzcocks and chronicles the story of two teenagers who hear the recently released song together in a record store. Since her first show, Killing Time at the Showroom in London in 1994, Taylor-Wood has had solo exhibitions at White Cube in London (1995, 2001, 2004, and 2008), Kunsthalle Zürich (1997), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. (1999), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2000), Centre National de la Photographie in Paris (2001), Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (2002), Russian Museum in St. Petersburg (2004), Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (2006), Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland (2007), and Museum of Contemporary Art in Houston...

Huge sepia toned poster of the Eiffel Tower, looking up through the trees of the Champ de Mars, By Jon Arnold. Printed on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper by Fujifilm. Jon Arnold has been passionate about photography ever since he bought his first camera in a small shop in Wells, England, an Olympus OM-1 film camera, when he was 15. His passion for travel and landscape started much earlier in childhood during the annual family pilgrimages south to the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Following wise parental advise he pursued a degree in Architecture at Brighton but shortly after completing the BA section of the course was lured away on a trip to China to see the world beyond the safe boundaries of western Europe. Early Brian McKee Original Photography "Castle View", Afghanistan, 2002 Ed. 1/5
Located in East Hampton, NY
This early original photography by the late Brian McKee (1977-2018) of a war-torn Castle in Northern Afghanistan. This is a chromogenic print mounted on aluminum - Series 1 of 5, from 2002. Provenance: This amazing piece was purchased at Art Basel (Switzerland) in 2002 from Galerie Ernst Hilger (Vienna). Paperwork to be provided at time of purchase. THIS ITEM IS LOCATED AND WILL SHIP FROM OUR MIAMI, FLORIDA SHOWROOM. Biography Brian McKee was born in 1977 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri and attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and Bard College. While at Bard College he studied photography with Stephen Shore, Larry Fink and Barbara Ess as well as writing under John Ashbery whose assistant he was for more than three years. For five years he was the assistant to the photographer Lynn Davis. He lived and worked in New York City/USA, Vienna/Austria and Istanbul/Turkey. Brian McKee called himself “a visual historian” who ventured to “convey a unique and important view of select aspects of World History” with his photographs. “Within architecture and landscapes I find my true subject, the detritus of civilization, and seek to explore the way we define and relate to its existence. Although creating precisely composed and executed images I carefully chose projects that have a conceptual meaning and importance beyond their visual interest or beauty.” For the past 15 years McKee had focused on examining and visualizing a body of work that explored both the current and past social and political atmospheres of countries around the world. Photographing with an 8x10 inch Deardorff plate camera he composed poetic images, which conveyed a complex untold narrative embedded in an immaculate concept, which didn’t only exist for aesthetic purposes. He was fond of ”the idea that houses, buildings, towns and cities provide us with a true understanding of the cultures that inhabited those spaces. At the same time they are a reflection of the social, political and personal atmosphere that created them.” His signature subject of the rise and fall began 1999 when he photographed Soviet military...
