About the Item

The hexagon is a symbolic shape that still carries a great deal of tradition and cultural heft. Six is the number of creation and perfection, symbolizing divine power, majesty, wisdom, love, mercy, and justice. While Cartier innovated some of the most iconic designs of the Art Deco period employing geometric shapes, sharp angles, and bold use of color, this piece incorporates many similar formal elements but encompasses an entirely different feel. The Cartier Vintage Sapphire Diamond Lavalier Necklace, made in France in the 20th century, circa 1980s, is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features two hexagonal-shaped step-cut sapphires of significant size. The sapphires are accompanied by reports from the America Gemological Laboratories (AGL) stating that they are natural corundum sapphires of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin with no indication of heat treatment nor clarity enhancement. Approximate total weight of the sapphires is 15 carats. The necklace is Signed by Cartier and numbered with French assay marks. Unheated Ceylon sapphires with such magnificent coloration as these are quite splendid, as the majority of colored gemstones on the market have been heat-treated to improve color saturation and clarity. Ceylon sapphires are almost as desired as diamonds. No matter how you cut or set a Ceylon sapphire, its beauty, and elegance are undeniable. Ceylon sapphires are known for being lighter, brighter, and more vivid than the dark blue sapphires that come from other countries, and typically with a slightly lighter cornflower blue, like this pair of beautifully matched stones. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) has some of the world’s oldest sapphire mines dating as far back as the second century AD. The step-cut hexagon shape of these two stones makes their blue color even more spectacular, like gazing into an infinite reflecting pool. The sapphires are each bezel-set in 18K yellow gold with a second floating hexagon reflecting all the warm yellow gold around and back into the stones. In fact the rich color of the sapphires is complemented by the warm tone of the yellow gold. The two sapphires are connected by a familiar Cartier buckle motif embellished with round brilliant-cut pavé diamonds, which is borrowed from the Art Deco archives of the Maison. Playing further upon the hexagon shape of the sapphires, the chain is comprised of golden hexagons each set with 7 pavé diamonds within broad articulated stylized links and flanked by chevroned parentheses. The detail is dynamic and energizes the flow of the chain around the entirety of the piece, connected with small and sparkling pavé diamond links. The lavalier or Y necklace is a form that typically is feminine and delicate, here re-imagined as a bold and powerful jewel. Measures approx. 15.78” (40cm) in length. 2 hexagonal step-cut blue sapphires of Ceylon origin with no indication of thermal treatment. Sapphires are certified by AGL. The chain is set with round diamonds with F-H color, VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 83.30 grams, crafted in 18k yellow gold. Includes red Cartier pouch. Signed Cartier with serial number, stamped with French marks; circa 1980s.
