Period: Mid-19th Century
Antique Silver and 14K Gold Cross Pendant with Rose-Cut Diamonds, Circa 1850
Located in Rotterdam, NL
This elegant antique cross pendant is a refined example of mid-19th century devotional jewelry, dating to around circa 1850, and crafted in silver with a 14 karat yellow gold backing. The front of the cross is delicately set with a total of 12 rose-cut diamonds, arranged in a scalloped border pattern that enhances their subtle sparkle. Each stone is securely set in silver, as was customary in the era to best reflect the light from candlelit interiors. The reverse of the pendant features beautifully detailed engraved flower motifs in relief, adding an additional layer of craftsmanship and making the back as decorative as the front — a feature often seen in early European cross pendants. Materials: Silver front, 14K yellow gold reverse Gemstones: Rose-cut diamonds Dimensions: 45 mm x 25 mm Weight: 5.4 grams Origin: Likely Dutch or Northern European Period: Mid-19th century (circa 1850) Condition: Excellent antique condition with fine patina and minor wear consistent with age This pendant is both a spiritual and artistic treasure, perfect for collectors of antique religious jewelry...

RARE VICTORIAN VULCANITE GRAPE CHOKER NECKLACE ca. 1860
Located in New York, NY
This piece is so special and so rare: it dates to the Victorian era, more specifically the 1860s, and was likely made in Britain. It is crafted from vulcanite and features a teardrop shape with a high relief bunch of grapes in intricate detail, surrounded by a border of carved beads, strung on a fine black ribbon, to be worn as choker. (I love it strung on the Victorian Jet Choker pictured, which is also available in my shop.) The vulcanite has this truly stunning, relatively matte finish, with a rich warm glow— it's just so unique and unlike any other material. What is vulcanite? It is made by combining the sap of the Euphorbia or Ficus trees from Malaysia, with sulphur. It was originally invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock. His timing just happened to be spot-on: black had long been considered essential to mourning jewelry and mourning dress, but thanks to Queen Victoria's extended 40 years of grieving (for her husband, Prince Albert), from about 1860-1890, black was considered a highly fashionable color, and began to be worn outside mourning dress. During this period, vulcanite became a very fashionable material for jewelry, and it loaned objects that gothic, romantic, dramatic black cast that Victorians just loved. Victorian mourning jewelry is rife with grape motifs; for one, grapes were a symbols of Christ (as wine is the blood of Christ). On Victorian grave markers, a cluster of grapes typically means that the deceased was of mature years. Victorians are well known for using flowers and botanicals as a means of communication. Wild grapes, according to The Language of Flowers published in 1913, are symbols of Charity, a favorite Victorian theme. NOTE: The Victorian Hair Mourning...

Victorian Masonic Mother of Pearl Charms
Located in London, GB
A very rare mid-19th century French masonic mother of pearl charm pendant. It is truly remarkable how this particularly fragile gold and mother of pearl pendant has survived in such pristine condition for all these years. The charm pendant features 5 different motifs associated with Freemasonry including the shovel, all-seeing eye, compass, square and scales. They have all been crafted in gold and hand carved mother of pearl. The individual pendants can be easily added or removed as the bail is actually a split ring which opens up. The pendant weighs 1.77 grams. The gold is unmarked but tests as 15K gold. It measures approximately 2cm in length. A fantastic and coveted addition for any collector of rare and antique masonic jewellery.

Saint Cecelia Chatelaine Pendant by Froment-Meurice, French, circa 1850
Located in London, GB
Saint Cecelia chatelaine pendant by Froment-Meurice. A gold and silver pendant in the Renaissance Revival style, the main element composed of an ornately carved openwork architectural structure in the form of an altarpiece, the central niche surmounted by a cupola set with pearls, with scroll and scalloped details to the interior and suspending a fleur-de-lis, containing a figure of Saint Cecelia playing a viola da gamba with two dancing putti to either side, flanked by two smaller raised pedestals issuing fleur-de-lis, each set with a putto (one playing a harp, the other playing a triangle), suspending a double swagged gold chain set with pearls, with two further chains suspending on one side a circular lapis lazuli seal in a trumpet form mount and on the other a watch winder, the whole accented with blue enamel and set to the reverse with a hinged band loop, approximately 9.5cm in total length. Tested yellow gold and silver, French, circa 1850. François Désiré Froment-Meurice (1802-1855) was one of the most important French jewellery and silversmiths of the nineteenth century, described by Victor Hugo as the Cellini of his age. He exhibited in a number of International Exhibitions, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were among his clients. The Renaissance Revival, as seen here, and the Gothic Revival were his two major decorative styles. This piece is also typical of his penchant for placing a silver figure, usually female, within a yellow gold architectural mount. The central figure and flanking putti are identical to those found on two brooches by Froment-Meurice, one in the Birmingham Museum and one in the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim. Another brooch by Froment-Meurice, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, features a similar central figure, but this time as an angel with wings, in a silver oval blue enamelled frame. These examples also bear a similar gold and blue enamel architectural mount, and differ only in the surrounding and pendulant embellishments. Saint Cecelia is the patroness of music, whose feast day is celebrated each November. A Roman maiden, she was amongst the earliest and most famous of the Roman martyrs, reputedly beheaded in 230 AD under the Emperor Alexander Severus. Throughout history, Saint Cecelia has inspired musicians and poets alike, appearing in John Dryden...
