Dancing Ducks in Magenta, Forest Green, Brown, Slate Gray
By George Chemeche
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: George Chemeche – Iraqi/American (1934-2022) Title: Dancing Ducks in Magenta, Forest Green, Brown, Slate Gray Year: circa 1980 Medium: Screen Print Image size: 19 x 27 inches. Sheet size: 22 x 29 inches. Signature: Signed lower right Edition: 260 This one: 109/260 Condition: Very good Unframed This exceptional geometric abstract serigraph is by the noted Iraqi/American artist George Chemeche (1934-2022 ). He is a master of serigraph printing, but this print has more than technical excellence. It is a wonderful, rhythmic abstract composition. I believe Chemeche might have been a proponent of and/or influenced by the Pattern and Decoration Movement which was happening in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The print has never been framed and is in very good condition. I will ship the print rolled in a heavyweight tube. George Chemeche was born in 1934 and studied at the Avni Art School in Tel Aviv and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. The style with which he is intimately associated, pattern painting, The most serviceable definition is that pattern is the systematic repetition of a motif or motifs used to cover a surface uniformly. The spaces between motifs are either other motifs or are an integral part of the repeat. Usually, patterning intentionally acknowledges the decorative function of art, reconciling both the decorative and the meaningful. George Chemeche’s work hangs in the lobby of the Hotel Chelsea where many have admired it for years. Please search online for more biographical information by this fine artist. Citamerdu (Amrita) Plant: 17th Century Botanical Engraving by Hendrik van Rheede
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a rare 17th century engraving of a plant entitled "Citamerdu" by the Dutch botanist Hendrik van Rheede tot Drakenstein, plate 21 from his 'Hortus Indicus Malabaricus' (Garden of Malabar), published in Amsterdam in 1686 by Johann van Someren. The engraving depicts the Citamerdu plant, also known as Tinospora cordifolia plant or Amrita and Guduchi. It is a deciduous plant with heart-shaped leaves, greenish flowers, and pea-shaped fruits. Rheede's 19th century publication featured illustrations of exotic plants and fruits labelled with script in the upper right corner in Latin, Malay, Arabic, and Sanskrit. Hortus Indicus Malabaricus is believed to be the earliest comprehensive published work on the flora of Asia and the tropics. The 17th century treatise featured important illustrations of 740 plants of the region, including Indian medicinal plants. The engraving is printed on 17th century laid, chain-linked paper, watermarked with an elaborate crown design. The sheet measures 15.75" high by 18.75" wide. There is a central fold, as issued. There are a few small spots, but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. There are additional Rheede botanical engravings from his 'Hortus Indicus Malabaricus' publication that are listed on my 1stdibs storefront and online website. These would make for an impressive display grouping. A discount is available for purchase of two or more of the prints. Hendrik Adriaan van...

Tom Sawyer Detective by Mark Twain: 19th C. Framed Colored Poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Alamo, CA
This lithographic colored advertising poster entitled "Tom Sawyer Detective, A New Story by Mark Twain" was created by Edward Penfield in 1897 for Harper & Brothers. The artist's signature appears in the plate in the lower left. The poster depicts a man in a long black bathing suit sitting with his knees up, aimlessly smoking a cigarette, but looking out of the corner of his eyes at a woman in a olive green dress and tan blouse and a black hat, who sits to his left with her head propped in her left hand and a bored or concerned look on her face. The look on the faces of the couple creates an air of mystery. The title of the book is printed in red in the upper left and the issue "Harper's August" in bold letters in the lower poster. The poster promotes a new book by Mark Twain that was published initially in two issues of Harper's Monthly and also in book form by Harper & Brothers in 1896. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", published in 1876, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", published in 1884, and "Tom Sawyer Abroad", also published in 1894. The plot of the book involves Tom Sawyer attempting to solve a mysterious murder. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of his friend Huck Finn...

White Hamburgh Grape: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
By George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "White Hamburgh Grape", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 60 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a cluster of pale green grapes still on the vine. The vine and leaves are shown in attractive shades of green and brown. The plant lays on a brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There is a light brown title rectangle in the lower center which is blank, suggesting this may be a more rare preproduction proof. There are wide white margins. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick light beige mat. The frame measures 26" high, 22" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a tiny spot in the lower margin on the left and another in the left margin. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...
