About the Item
This is a framed 19th century color lithograph entitled "Mothu et Doria" created by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen and published between 1896 and 1899 in Paris, France by Jules Cheret in his famous series of miniature colored stone lithographs of popular Belle Epoch posters "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", released to subscribers in groups of four. It depicts two Parisian men, possibly the singers Mothu and Doria, standing by a lamp post on a starlit night. A well-dressed gentleman, who is possibly returning from the opera, lights the cigarette of a second less well-dressed man with his own cigar. It has been a matter of controversy as to what message Steinlen is trying to convey; possibly highlighting a moment of socioeconomic contrast or perhaps mutual respect and harmony between socioeconomic classes. Its ambiguity contributes to its stature as a superb work of art.
This color lithograph released in Cheret's series Maitres de l’Affiche was printed by Chaix imprimerie between the years 1895 and 1900. The publication "Les Maitres de l’affiche" celebrated the great posters and poster artists of the time. Important posters were printed using color stone lithography in a smaller in scale than the original posters, and released to subscribers over a period of five years. . A singing duo in Aristide Bruant's social-realist mode? A stage drama? Is it or comity?
This colorful color lithograph is presented in an antiqued gold-colored wood frame with a red toned trim, which picks up the red in the men's shirts. There is a soft brown/taupe-colored French mat with a gold highlight line and a black inner mat. The frame measures 22.25" high, 18.125" wide and 0.75" in depth. The print is signed in plate in the lower left and the embossed blindstamp of Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix is in the lower right.
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. He was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, but moved to France to train as a textile designer. There he developed his painting skills. The painter François Bocion became aware of his work and encouraged him to join the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. There he became friendly with the painter Adolphe Willette, who introduced him to the artistic crowd at the cabaret Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat). The owner of the cabaret commissioned him to create graphic poster art for his business, as well as for others. Some of Steinlen's most famous posters depict cats, some incorporated in Le Chat Noir's posters, but other graphic art and sculptures just focus on cats. Steinlen even published a book of his cat designs, "Dessins Sans Paroles Des Chats" (Drawings Without Words Of Cats).
Art Nouveau posters by Steinlen and his contemporaries in the Belle Epoch era in Paris became extremely popular and collectible. Jules Cheret, a prominent and now famous poster graphic artist, recognized the popularity of these posters and led him to create color lithographs of them, which were printed by Chaix imprimerie and published by subscription over a five year period in the 1890's in a series called "Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix", which were avidly collected then and have continued to gain in popularity to the present.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859. He was naturalized French in 1901. He was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor. Before settling in Paris, he made a detour to Mulhouse where one of his uncles placed him in the studio of one of the best lithographers of the time. He settled definitively in Montmartre in 1881. Willette introduced him to his companions of the Cabaret du Chat-Noir animated by Rodolphe Salis. He met Toulouse-Lautrec, Forain, Léandre, Debussy, Eric Satie, Verlaine, Alphonse Allais and Aristide Bruant. He took part in the performances of the famous cabaret's shadow theater with animal stories and, most often, sequences featuring cats, for which he has a particular affection. The felines will appear throughout his activity as "parentheses" in a tormented work. There is, in this torment, the expression of no personal problem but a painful compassion for the lives of the exploited and marginal beings. He painted and drew idylls, balls and bastrings, workers, kids and gosselin, the poor, the little workers, girls and marlous. He sometimes made posters. In the most successful of them (« Le lait pur de la Vingeanne » et le « Fer Bravais ») he imposed, relevant or not, the presence of cats.
In 1901, Steinlen worked for L'Assiette au beurre , the most virulent satirical newspaper ever published and takes readily to target the institutions of the 3rd Republic.
His works are found in numerous Public Collections, such as Petit Palais in Geneva, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

- An early 19th C. satirical etching of John Bull kneeling before William PittLocated in Alamo, CAThis is an early 19th century hand-colored satirical caricature etching entitled "John Bull and his favourite statue of bronze!!", published and possibly engraved in London in 1802 by William Holland (1757-1815). It depicts John Bull (symbolizing the English people) kneeling in profile before William Pitt, who was prime minister of England at the time, and for whom the American city of Pittsburgh was named. Pitt is standing, pretending to be a statue. A rectangular pedestal beneath Pitt is inscribed: "Erected by Voluntary Subscription!" Pitt's body seems elongated, reminding that this a caricature. He is standing, looking to the left, his aristocratic nose held high in apparent arrogance and his hands are deep in his pockets, with his hat under his right arm. John Bull, is dressed simply for the time. He is on in his knees in a gesture of supplication, as if in prayer or begging for some action from a deity. He is holding his hat in both hands, looking up at Pitt. Trees and bushes are seen in the background. A caption showing John Bull's words in the upper left ironically reads: "O Wonderful Man! - how I revere thy sublime resemblance. - what obligations I am under to thee! what happy times thou hast brought about! Bread for nothing! Beef 3d per pound! Porter 3d per pot! a Goose 2 shillings! and a fat Turkey 3s.6d!! - whit every thing else cheap in proportion! - besides the wonderful decrease of Taxes!! - O Dear - O Dear I hardly know how to express myself, I feel so enraptured. - O that fine brass countenance how it shines with conscious Integrity!" The engraving is presented in a gold-colored wood frame and a tan-colored mat, with curved upper corners. The frame measures 18" high, 13.13" wide and 0.5" deep. The framing and mounting utilizes acid-free archival materials and it is glazed with UV conservation clear glass. There are a few faint areas of discoloration and spotting and an apparent short barely visible crease in the lower right corner of the inscription area. The print is otherwise in very good condition. William Holland was printmaker as well as a prominent dealer of satirical prints in London in late 18th and early 19th century. He carried works by the best known satirists of the time: Gillray, Rowlandson, Newton and Woodward, as well as his own creations. Holland along with the other prominent print-sellers of the time, Hannah Humphrey and Samuel Fores, were responsible for promoting the golden age of British caricature...Category
