Pair of Japanese Moriage Satsuma Vases with Gold Gilding Circa 1930-1940
Located in Ixelles, BE
Japanese Satsuma vases from the circa 1930-1940 period are a particular style of ceramic art that originated from the Satsuma province of Japan. Satsuma ware is renowned for its intricate hand-painted designs, rich colors, and distinctive crackled glaze. Satsuma ware dates back to the early 17th century, but it gained widespread popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the 1930s and 1940s. Satsuma vases produced during this time often reflected a mix of traditional and modern influences, as Japan went through a period of cultural exchange and artistic experimentation. Satsuma vases are made from a type of Japanese earthenware clay known for its fine texture and malleability. The vases are hand-formed or wheel-thrown and then meticulously hand-painted with intricate designs using enamel paints. The distinctive crackled glaze was achieved by firing the vases at a relatively low temperature, allowing the glaze to crack during the cooling process. The moriage technique involves applying three-dimensional, raised ornamentation to the surface of the ceramic piece, creating a visually textured and layered effect. Artisans create three-dimensional patterns, designs, or intricate motifs using a special mixture of clay, slip, or porcelain paste. The raised elements are added by hand to the ceramic body, and each detail is carefully shaped to achieve the desired effect. The moriage is then gold gilded as some of the intricate ornamental patterns and the halos around the three immortal...

Brass chair model "Leda" by Salvador Dalí surrealist design
By Salvador Dalí, BD Barcelona Design
Located in Barcelona, ES
Armchair model "Leda" Structure in polished cast brass varnish. Salvador Dali Taken from “Femme à tête de roses" (1935)” 1935 (Woman with a head of roses). It was sufficient for this sculpture to be made as a three dimensional piece, remaining faithful to every detail in Dalí’s painting. Dalí affirmed: “A chair can be used even to sit on, but only on one condition: That we sit uncomfortably.” We can sit on the Leda, but due to the fact that it only has three legs and that the chair is heavy, it being made of solid brass, is more a work of art than a functional piece of furniture. © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres, 2022 Artworks by Salvador Dalí: © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, VEGAP, Barcelona, 2022 Salvador Dalí is the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century and the most famous Surrealist. Though chiefly remembered for his painterly output, in the course of his long career he successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, filmmaking and design. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Dalí received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid. Influenced by Impressionism and the Renaissance masters from a young age, he became increasingly attracted to Cubism and avant-garde movements. He moved closer to Surrealism in the late 1920s and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents. In the Paris of the 1930s, Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends working in the application of art to a number of varied disciplines, beyond the study of purely pictorial art. One of these, Jean-Michel Frank, an acclaimed furniture designer and decorator in Paris at that time, got on extremely well with Dalí, and together they developed a number of ideas. One example of this is the Bracelli lamp, a classic design in Jean-Michel’s manner of designing and working that Dalí adopted for his home in Portlligat. Among Dalí’s projects, which add to his CV as a designer, are the garden furniture for his home in Portlligat, the complete architecture of the Night Club (in the shape of a hedgehog) for the Hotel Presidente in Acapulco (1957) and a project for a bar in California in the 1940s. His creations were not limited to traditional furniture elements, but included taps, handles, knobs, prints and objects of indeterminate use. In 1933, Dalí even registered the patent for the design of a bench as an outdoor seat. In the 1990s, a team of experts led by Oscar Tusquets set out to bring to life the furniture that Dalí had sketched for Jean-Michel Frank, including the Leda chair and low table taken from the 1935 painting “Femme...

18th century Antique wooden Indian temple panel from India
Located in DEVENTER, NL
Step into the sacred legacy of Indian temple artistry with this Antique wooden Indian temple panel, a rare 18th-century relic originating from a historic Temple Chariot (Rath) in India. Measuring 51.3 cm high, 25.1 cm wide, and 13.4 cm deep, this intricately carved wooden panel once adorned a ceremonial chariot used in grand religious processions, embodying the spiritual fervor and architectural grandeur of Hindu traditions. Crafted by skilled artisans, the panel showcases elaborate depictions of deities, mythological scenes, or floral motifs, symbols of divine protection and cosmic order central to temple rituals. Weighing 6.74 kgs, its robust yet finely detailed construction reflects the durability required for chariots that traversed festival routes, carrying sacred idols amid vibrant celebrations. The rich patina and aged wood grain bear witness to centuries of devotion, while the panel’s provenance—documented in the last two photos of its original chariot—adds unparalleled historical authenticity. Created during an era of flourishing temple art under royal patronage, this piece exemplifies the fusion of devotional craftsmanship and functional sacred art, offering a tangible link to India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Ideal for collectors of Asian religious artifacts, historians, or interior design connoisseurs, this 18th-century temple panel transcends mere decoration, serving as a narrative artifact of India’s temple...
