Texas - Case Pieces and Storage Cabinets

This unique armoire from the early 1700’s was made from walnut and olive wood and features a plinth base with central cherub mascaron along the crown. At just under 86 inches tall and 78 wide at the crown, this armoire has a more manageable size, compared to many of the very large armoires of the same period. The unique construction allows it to be easily disassembled for transport. At one point, this walnut and olive wood armoire was the property of a chocoladefabriek (chocolate factory) in Strasbourg, located in the region of Alsace, near the German border. It was originally one armoire in a pair that were commissioned in Eastern France in the early 1700s. The ebeniste who created the armoire decided to use olive wood for the door panels and some of the side panels. Olive wood was a highly valued wood among wood workers of the 18th century because of its pretty color and the richness and nuances of its veining. In the center of the crown is a foliate and floral ring surrounding a cherub mascaron. The crown and the top of the door frames have both been carved in an arch, mirroring the shape of the door moldings. Each door is mounted on iron hinges and separated by recessed molding into three uniquely shaped panels of olive wood (the rest of the armoire is constructed with walnut). Both upper panels of the doors are adorned with a series of undulating C-scrolls, while the bottom panels are rectangles with concave tops. Keep your valuables and documents in this important antique hobnail safe. Manufactured by Magaud de Charf in Clermont, France, the monumental wrought iron safe is decorated with nail head motifs on all four sides and has an all-original, working mechanism. The front door is further decorated with two large hinges on the sides, and further embellished with a bronze plaque on the top which reads: "Doumaux Jeune a Clermont 1838". The inside opens to reveal an amazing lock mechanism and a large storage compartment. To open the safe, you first need to find and locate the nail which will activate and open the key latch on the right. Next, place the two large keys in each key hole one at a time and turn them in a certain order to open the safe; when opened, the inside reveals three wooden drawers over a bottom shelf which lifts up for underneath storage. Andre Antoine Lardin, also known as N.B. Lardin was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held his master's title from 1 July 1750 and was particularly respected for the exceptional quality of his veneering / marquetry. A well known and regarded maître ébéniste, Lardin’s career is somewhat thinly documented, most likely due to the upheaval and record destruction during the Revolution, notably when the guilds in Paris and elsewhere were abolished in 1791. Lardin worked for various marchand-mercier (furniture dealers) and probably also for a private clientele. He ran his workshop first in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the second-named became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. Lardin is known to have worked for the marchands André-François Carré, this superb commode having almost most certainly been commissioned through the intervention of one of these fashionable dealers. The marchand-mercier André-François Carré, is recorded rue Froidmanteau, "Magasin de glaces, porcelaine ébénisterie et curiosités pour les cabinets d'histoire naturelle." Carré also worked with two vernisseurs (vernis Martin): Porchon and Prévost. All of Lardin's furniture is classic in form and decor, well crafted and mostly veneered in rosewoods or violet wood. Lardin worked in the taste of the time with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as birds, trophies, urns, landscapes, or flowers and sunburts such as this stunning example appear more rarely. The stamp JME stands for Jures Menuisiers Ebeniste and notes the guild affiliation of the master. The Corporation des Menuisiers-Ébénistes was a French craft guild which was concerned with the profession of woodworking. Some JME stamps are worn down from the marble slab over the years and no longer apparent, but in this case lacking the JME stamp is likely indicative of work made prior to reaching maître ébéniste (master cabinetmaker), denoting an early and exceedingly scarce example.
