Japanese Lacquer Maki-E Scroll Box Fubako by Kansonsai Edo Period

A Japanese lacquered wood fubako (a box to store document or small scroll painting) circa late 18th century of Edo period. The rectangular box features a deep lid with rounded corners and recessed mid-edge and a lower box with two bronze medallion rings and tasseled silk ties. The surface of the fubako was elaborately decorated with hiramaki-e and a low takamaki-e on a mottled Mura-nashiji background. The motifs on the lid depict branches of Japanese pine with finely rendered needles on the lower part; on the upper part, it showcases fruited persimmon branches. Two different shades of gold fundame were used to contrast the design and augmented by scattered gold kirigane to highlight some of the leaves. The design continues and cascades down to all sides of the lid as well as the walls of the box. The two bronze medallions appear original to the box and the silk ties show significant fading from the age. This Fine fubako is signed on the lower wall "Kanshosai" in Kanji with a kao mark. All the trims were finished in gold fundame and the interiors a dense nashiji in gold.
Kanshosai is the mark of the distinguished lacquer artist Lizuka Toyo I who also signed his work "Toyosai". He was active in the second half of the 18th century during Edo period, employed by Hachisuka Shigeyoshi (1738-1801), daimyo of Awa on Shikoku Island. A Korean Hori-Mishima Chawan (tea bowl) circa 16th-17th century (Joseon Dynasty). The tea bowl is of an upright conical form supported by a high foot ring. It was decorated with incised brushwood fence patterns filled with white slip on both the interior and exterior surface. These dominant motifs were spaced by three encircling double lines. Seven chrysanthemum flowers (inka) were stamped on the lower interior surrounding a swirling tea well on the bottom. There are six spur marks known as Meato in Japanese on the interior bottom and a pointy spot in the center of the foot ring known as Tokin. Two crack lines were historically repaired by superb Kintsugi, adding a mysterious wabi-sabi appeal to the piece.

Celadon Vase, Five Dynasties or Northern Song dynasty, 10th-11th Century

The form of Longquan celadon vases from the Northern Song dynasty evolved from an early design with a long neck and tapering body to a later ovoid body with a shorter neck. Over time, the glaze developed a more olive tone, and the carved decorations became more pronounced and intricate. Examples of such vases include one without a cover dated to the Yuanfeng era (1078~1085) and documented in literature, and another similar vase without loop handles preserved by the Qingyuan County Cultural Relics Bureau. An earlier example featuring loop handles and a lotus-like cover is also mentioned in historical texts.
The use of Longquan covered vases, especially as funerary jars for offerings like wine and grains, was highlighted by an inscription on a piece from the Sir Percival David Collection, London. This inscription wishes for the vessel to preserve fragrant wine for centuries, blessing the owner with prosperity, longevity, and a vast lineage, dated to the third year of the Yuanfeng period (1080). This practice was common in the regions of Southern Zhejiang and Northern Fujian. A similar celadon vase from the Linyushanren collection was auctioned at Christie’s Hong Kong, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of these artifacts.

A good antique 18th century Ottoman Iznik/Kutayha pottery plate, circa 1750.
The plate with a cream glaze ground, hand-painted with multi-colored floral motifs of under glaze blue, green & red. The plate is decorated with typical stylized tulips, carnations and Ottoman Saz leaves & blossoms.
Iznik & Kutahya are towns in Turkey with an illustrious history of hundreds of years of fine pottery making, this type of pottery is characterized by it's fritware body often containing a high percentage of ground glass & fired at lower temperatures, a type of tin glazed earthenware, which was an attempt to imitate the high-fired glazes of Chinese porcelain.
This plate dates to the middle of the 1700s by around 1800 the production of such pottery has ceased. This plate is in good condition, no cracks or chips, expected small amounts of glaze loss to the edges, the makers mark is on the verso in the form of an under glaze flower head.
