Egyptian Antique Bronze Seated Statue of Harpokrates
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
An interesting and unusual Egyptian bronze seated figure portraying the youthful god Harpokrates (Horus the child). The figure sits unclothed with legs bent and both arms resting by his sides. His face is indistinctly molded with a wide nose and with a sidelock of hair. He wears a Pschent crown. The figure, which is removable, has a later carved and fitted oak throne. The figure has an all over black patina. The figure does have some antique age although may be an Egyptian revival piece and would benefit from further research. We are therefore offering this as a later example and priced accordingly. Harpokrates was one of the most popular deities in the Egyptian pantheon. He was the offspring...

Antique French Bronze Pheasant and Weasel by Jules Moigniez
Located in Newark, England
Pheasant and Weasel From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this French Bronze Pheasant by Jules Moigniez. The French Bronze of good scale cast with a large male Pheasant clambering upon a rocky outcrop startled by a Weasel hiding within the foliage. The Pheasant naturalistically cast with individual feathers visible, sharp claws and spurs above the foot. The Weasel sits hidden in the foliage visible from viewing the French Bronze from the side as it shocks the Pheasant. The French Bronze signed to the front left on a rock face J. Moigniez (Jules Moigniez). The bronze sculpture dates to the late 19th century belle époque period Circa 1870. Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was born at Senlis, Oise, just north of Paris, France on the 28 May 1835 the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez studied under Paul Comoléra (1813-1890) a specialist Animalia sculptor. It is clear that Moigniez’s career in Animalia was passed down from his tutors specialism in Animalia and in particular birds. Moigniez father bought a foundry specifically to cast his son’s sculptures. This gave Moigniez a huge advantage compared to other artist as it greatly reduced his costs during manufacturing and increased productivity keeping the process in-house. Moigniez throughout his career became known for this Animalia sculptures...

XIX Century Newfoundland Labrador Sculpture (Devezas Ceramics)
Located in Lisboa, PT
The Newfoundland Labrador dog, commonly referred to as the Newfoundland or Newfie, is a large and strong breed known for its gentle and sweet nature. It originated from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, where it was originally bred as a working dog for tasks such as hauling fishing nets, pulling carts, and rescuing people from water. Key characteristics of the Newfoundland breed include its massive size, with males typically weighing between 130-150 pounds (59-68 kg) and females between 100-120 pounds (45-54 kg). They have a thick double coat that is water-resistant, which helps them excel in water activities and also provides protection in cold climates. The coat can come in various colors, including black, brown, gray, and Landseer (white with black markings). Newfoundlands are known for their gentle and calm demeanor, making them excellent family pets and great with children. They are often described as "gentle giants" due to their patient and affectionate nature. Despite their size, they are generally good-natured and friendly with strangers and other animals. These dogs require regular grooming due to their thick coats, and they also need moderate exercise to stay healthy and happy. They enjoy activities like swimming, hiking, and participating in water sports. Additionally, early socialization and training are important to ensure they grow up to be well-behaved companions. Overall, the Newfoundland Labrador dog is a beloved breed known for its loyalty, gentle nature, and versatility in various roles, from family pet to working dog. The Fábrica de Cerâmica das Devesas (Devesas Ceramic Factory) was established in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1865 and was, at the time, one of the largest and best equipped producers of ceramics.[1] Founded by António Almeida e Costa...

Large bronze after Pigalle, "Mercure attachant ses talonnières", 19th century
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Paris, FR
Brown patina bronze sculpture depicting Mercury (Hermes), god of commerce, thieves and messenger of the gods, seated on a rock tying his winged heel-piece. He is wearing a petasus, a winged hat, and his caduceus is resting on the ground. This sculpture, based on a model by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, shows a young god, naked and in motion. In a double-swivel position, he prepares to take off. The bronze, resting on a circular stepped base in griotte red marble, is signed on the terrace "Pigalle, 1745". The original of this sculpture was Pigalle's reception piece for the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture on July 30, 1744, which entered the Louvre between 1848 and 1850. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle: The sculptor of the Enlightenment A great French sculptor, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was born in Paris in 1714. He worked on his art from an early age under the guidance of Robert Le Lorrain and later Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. Convinced that his art was the meaning of his life, he returned to Italy in 1734 to perfect his technique. On his return, he began his "Mercure attachant sa talonnière" (1740), which enabled him to enter the Beaux-Arts. His reputation soared among the Parisian aristocracy. Mme de Pompadour took him under her wing, and commissions poured in. Juggling between the Baroque and the Classical, he painted portraits of Diderot and Voltaire, then created the famous funeral monuments...

Grand Tour bronze figure of “The Dying Gaul”, After The Antique
Located in Montreal, QC
A late 19th century Grand Tour bronze figure of “The Dying Gaul”, after the antique. The Dying Gaul depicts a warrior in his final moments, next to his shield and sword, his face contorted in pain just before he collapses from the mortal wound to his chest The original marble figure, which is in the Capitoline museum in Rome is thought to be a Roman copy of a Greek sculpture in Bronze. As an image of a vanquished enemy, the sculpture embodies courage in defeat, self-possession in the face of death, and the recognition of nobility in an alien race. “The Dying Gaul” was found in Rome with another ancient marble...

Tenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican. Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century. Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...

Heroes of the Song of the Nibelungs, Cast Iron Statues, probably German
Located in Greding, DE
Two almost life-size cast iron statues with great depth of detail and bronze-colored patina. Dimensions left: 153 x 60 x 40 cm Dimensions right: 154 x 50 x 40 cm The statues most likely depict central heroes of the Nibelung saga. The statue on the left is depicted with a bear on its helmet, which means it is probably Dietrich von Bern. This suggests that the hero on the right is Hagen, whose helmet is crowned with a swan. In the Song of the Nibelungs, Dietrich of Bern battles Hagen of Tronje and Volker of Alzey and defeats them both. Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld's (1794-1872) interpretations of the Song of the Nibelungs in the frescoes of the Munich Residence combine the two characters from the literary source with this variant depiction as German knights...
