"Narcissus" Grand Tour Bronze Sculpture After the Antique

About the Item

A late 19th century / early 20th century bronze figure of Narcissus, after the Antique, He wears a wreath in his hair and carries a goat skin wine sack and stands on a circular base. Narcissus was a hunter and known for his beauty. He is said to have taken a drink of water from a pool and noticed his reflection in the water and fell in love with it. When he realised it was purely an image he died. The original of the Narcissus was discovered in 1862 in a nondescript house in Pompeii, being the last antique statue found in Italy to enjoy considerable fame. In a book sponsored by Chiurazzi & Fils, the secretary of the Naples Museum, Luigi Conforti, described the figure as the most beautiful bronze ever to have been discovered at Pompeii. We are indebted to Christies for this excellent description.
