About the Item

Antique Dutch Map of the Twelve Tribes of Israel – After Ezekiel, circa 1730 This uncommon early 18th-century Dutch map is titled "Ontwerp en Erfdeeling van’t Land Kanaan, volgens het gezicht van Ezechiel," which translates as “Design and Division of the Land of Canaan, according to the vision of Ezekiel.” Likely published around 1730, the map presents a theological interpretation of the Holy Land based on the prophetic text of Ezekiel (especially chapters 45–48), outlining the distribution of territories among the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Stretching from Hethelon in the north to Kades just south of the Dead Sea, the map is arranged in clear horizontal bands labeled with the names of the twelve tribes: Dan, Aser, Naphtali, Manasse, Ephraim, Ruben, Juda, Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulon, and Gad. Major ancient cities are marked, including Jerusalem, Gaza, Caesarea, Damascus, Tyre (Tyrus), and Joppa (Joppe), offering geographical reference points across both biblical and historical contexts. The map is elegantly composed, with the landmass flanked by the "Middellandsche Zee" (Mediterranean Sea) to the west and annotated with topographical elements such as mountain ranges and rivers. A decorative compass rose is included in the lower left corner. Along the right-hand side is a wide explanatory panel filled with Dutch text citing scriptural verses from Ezekiel that justify the division and structure depicted on the map. These quotations function as a theological legend to the visual layout. This piece is not only a geographic document but also a spiritual and interpretive artifact, blending religious scholarship, early cartography, and Dutch printmaking traditions. It would appeal to collectors of biblical maps, Judaica, or rare Dutch engravings. Condition: Very good condition. Clean impression with minor age toning. Wide margins intact. No tears or repairs. Framing suggestion: This map would benefit from a simple black or walnut frame with a cream or parchment-toned mat. Given its religious and historical character, it is well suited for display in a study, library, or alongside other biblical or antique cartographic prints.
