Le Corbusier, P.Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand LC2 Poltrona Armchair by Cassina

About the Item

Armchair designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand in 1928. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. Timeless, unique, and profoundly authentic, the LC2 armchair has played a role in the history of furniture design, becoming a worldwide icon. Created to enhance conversation, this armchair was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1929, as an archetype of the modern conception of furniture, dubbed “domestic equipment” by its creators. The separation of metal frame from upholstery expresses the Rationalist approach, this same separation responds to the logic of industrial manufacture, while also evoking the architectural relationship between the load-bearing structure and the walls. The balance between form and function derives form an in-depth study of human posture human body and through the use of the Modulor, a system based on the typical measurements of the male body and on a mathematical language informed by the proportions of universal harmony. In October 1927, the pair decided to draw on the contribution of a young architect who had already begun to establish a reputation on the architectural scene of the time: Charlotte Perriand. Their collaboration lasted through to 1937 and was extremely fruitful, especially in the field of furniture design. The partnership was highly significant, both in terms of the cultural weight of their achievements and their professional successes. It was together with Charlotte Perriand that the pair tackled the innovative project for “l’équipement d'intérieur de l’habitation”. The resulting designs were of great intellectual value and considerable commercial success. About the manufacturer: In a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Franco Albini, Frank Lloyd Wright and Marco Zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50’s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today Cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with The Cassina Perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought. A detailed, expansive horizon of combinations; when placed together, the products have an innovative soul and the modern icons create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres involved in a conversation dominated by a code of design excellence, formal sensitive awareness, solidity and cultural authority.

Pair Vintage Cassina Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret LC2 Leather Armchairs
By Cassina, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand Cassina
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A pair of vintage original Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret LC2 Chrome and Ivory Leather lounge chairs for Cassina with labelled upholstery and serial numbers. The price shown is for both chairs. The LC2 chair, designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, is a key piece in the evolution of modernist furniture. Originally part of a series created for the Villa Church (a private residence for a client in the Paris suburb of Ville-d'Avray), the LC2 epitomizes the collaborative spirit of the three designers. Its tubular steel frame and free form cushions marked a break from traditional designs, combining minimalist form with unexpected comfort. It was first presented in 1929 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris as part of a collection that would later be called the Equipement Interieur d’une Habitation (Interior Equipment for a Living). Alongside the LC2, the trio designed other iconic pieces, such as the LC1 Sling Chair, the LC3 Sofa, and the LC4 Chaise Longue. The LC4, in particular, is often considered one of the most innovative pieces in the collection, with its curved steel frame and adjustable reclining mechanism it was not just a chair, but a piece of furniture designed to enhance relaxation. As such it became a symbol of the modernist ideal—furniture that was as much about living comfortably as it was about making a design statement. The LC designs were created not just as individual works but as a broader vision for modern interiors, where furniture wasn’t just decorative but integrated into the living environment, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. While the LC2 chair was part of this vision for the Villa Church, it wasn't designed specifically for that one space; rather, it was a part of an overall shift towards modernist furniture that transcended any one project. When compared to the Bauhaus metal chairs...
