$595per item

About

The very first model Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949, the CH24 or wishbone chair, has been in continuous production since its introduction in 1950. With a form that is uniquely its own, the iconic CH24 wishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner holds a special place in the world of modern design. When designing the CH24, Wegner chose to combine the back- and armrest into a single piece. To give stability to the steam-bent top and ensure comfortable support, Wegner developed the characteristic Y-shaped back that the wishbone chair is named after. More than 100 steps are required to manufacture each wishbone chair, most of which are carried out by hand. The handwoven seat alone takes a skilled craftsman about an hour to create, using approximately 120 meters of paper cord, the impressive durability and stability of which makes the chair both strong and long-lasting. The wishbone chair offers comfort and stability as well as satisfying aesthetic desires for distinctive, elegant form. Over time, the wishbone chair has gained recognition as the ideal chair, capturing the essence of modern Danish design. The lightness and sculptural shape of the Classic CH24 wishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner adds style and functionality to any space. Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime - many of them considered masterpieces. He is probably best known for his iconic wishbone chair which has been in continuous production since 1950. The core of Wegner’s legacy is his focus on bringing the inner workings - the soul - of the furniture to the exterior, where the simplicity and functionality can be appreciated.  Additional information: Materials: Natural cord with wood frame Finish: Soft blue Dimensions: W 55 x D 51 x H 76 cm Seat height 45 cm Available in other color options: Red, grey, white, green, black.

About the Designer

Hans J. Wegner

Best known for his chairs and seating pieces — though a master of many furniture types like sofas and tables — Hans Wegner was a prolific designer whose elegant, often ebullient, forms and devotion to the finest methods in joinery made "Danish Modern" a popular byword for stylish, well-made furniture in the mid-20th century. Wegner considered himself a carpenter first and a furniture designer second. Like his peers Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Wegner believed that striking aesthetics in furniture were based on a foundation of practicality: a chair must be comfortable and sturdy before it is chic.In keeping with that tenet, several of Wegner’s best chair designs, seen in dealer listings below, have their roots in traditional seating forms. The Peacock chair (designed in 1947) is a throne-like adaptation of the Windsor chair; pieces from the China chair series (begun in 1944) as well as the 1949 Wishbone chair, with its distinctive Y-shaped back splat, are derived from 17th-century Ming seating pieces, as is the upholstered Ox chair (1960). Wegner’s comfy Papa Bear chair (1951) is an almost surreally re-scaled English wingback chair.Wegner’s most representative piece, the Round chair (1949), gained a footnote in political history when it was used on the TV stage of the first Kennedy-Nixon debate of 1960. That chair, along with Wegner’s more bravura designs, for example the 1963 Shell chair, with its curved surfboard-shaped seat, bring a quietly sculptural presence to a room. Wegner was a designer who revered his primary material — wood — and it shows. His wood gathers patina and character with age; every Hans Wegner piece testifies to the life it has led.
