Inspired by the Alpine style stick chairs in antiques shops in Hastings where James, the designer and maker, lives. The freehand organic, wavy shape of the back rest updates this traditional style of chair in a playful way.
Careful attention is paid to the joinery, with tapered tenons used for the legs, which get tighter over time. Control of moisture content and grain orientation of the English ash ensures joints that can last generations. The stock for the legs was rived to follow the arrow straight grain, providing extra strength compared to sawing the stock. The back is held in place with wedges that can be knocked out to easily disassemble.
The seat has a shallow saddle that adds to the surprising comfort of this chair. The soft natural soap finish and rounded edges make this chair so satisfyingly tactile as well as gorgeous to look at.

The chair reveals a modernist approach to designing around the human body and using natural materials, with one exception. The “rush” seat is actually made of paper cord: when the chair was first designed in 1947, shortages caused by World War II prevented Wegner from using jute. Fellow designer Finn Juhl gave the nickname of ‘Peacock,’ seeing the chair’s flattened spindles and magnificent arc resembling the bird’s plumage.

Condition: Excellent, with some minor wear throughout. Shallow chip on top of chair back measuring 1/2 inch long. Chair back’s sixth and seventh spindle from right slightly loose. Lamination along top of chair back slightly worn.

Chair back’s fifth spindle from right with wood chip measuring 1 inch long. Chair back’s sixth spindle from left loose.

Very rare set of four vintage Chiavari dining chairs Model P5 internally designed and produced by the renowned manufacturer Fratelli Podestà in the 1970s.
The P5 model has the typical characteristics of lightness and robustness of the other chairs produced in Chiavari in the last 200 years, but it can be recognised by a wider seat and a slightly lowered back that make this chair extremely comfortable without compromising its aesthetics which reaches a perfect balance between lightness and stability instead.
Made in ash and cane, these chairs are in perfect vintage condition: they have been restored and newly hand-caned by our internal atelier respecting all the ancient processes and techniques handed down by the Chiavari's artisans during the centuries-old manufacturing tradition of this beautiful Italian town.
